LeBron: Patience 'my biggest test'

WASHINGTON -- LeBron James, as much as any member of the new-look Cleveland Cavaliers, has been vocal about the process it will take to transform his team into a championship contender. But with the Cavs off to a 5-5 start, even James admits it's not easy staying focused on the long view.

"It's my biggest test," James said Friday morning in advance of the Cavs' game against theWashington Wizards (ESPN, 8 p.m.). "My patience isn't [endless]. I have a low tolerance for things of this nature. So it's something I'm working on, as well, which I knew from the beginning that that was going to be my biggest test to see how much patience I got with the process.

Getty ImagesLeBron James knows that getting his style of play to mesh with Kevin Love's and Kyrie Irving's is a "feel-out process."

"What helps me out is I've been through it before, but at the same time, I'm a winner, I want to win, and I want to win now. It's not tomorrow, it's not down the line, I want to win now. So it's a fine line for me, but I understand what we're enduring right now."

The Miami Heat infamously started off 9-8 in 2010-11, James' first season with the team. This was after James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Boshpredicted they would win multiple championships during a pep rally before they even played a game together, and with the heightened expectations that came from analysts such as ESPN/ABC's Jeff Van Gundy declaring they had a shot to best the Chicago Bulls' single-season record of 72-10.

After Cleveland lost to the San Antonio Spurs 92-90 on Wednesday, James said he had a "sense of comfort" to have already been through a rocky start with a new team four years ago back in Miami.

These Cavs are facing the same sort of outside pressure that James' first Heat team did. James reminded reporters that just because Cleveland has all the ingredients it needs, doesn't mean that it won't take time to make the meal.

"We put a lot of pieces together that wasn't here last year," James said. "I don't want to say 'rebuilding.' I think [when] people think of rebuilding, they think of starting from the ground up. But we are a team that wasn't together last year, so [we have] the same struggles as the [Philadelphia] 76ers or as the Miami Heat right now and us, we have some of the same qualities as far as putting new guys together.

"Obviously the talent is a little bit different on every team, but [the Cavs are] coming together and going through a new system -- we have a new coach, we have a new staff, we have new players. The problem with everyone is everyone wants overnight success and no one wants to work for it. So, you put in the hard work, you get the satisfaction of it later."

James was asked specifically about how satisfied he is with how his relationship with first-year head coach David Blatt is going.

"It takes a long time," James said. "I don't know the exact time, but it takes awhile. You have to go through things on the floor and be with him, and you got to go through a lot of tough times and see how guys react from it and see how you come back from it. But, it doesn't happen overnight."

Earlier in the week, James endorsed Blatt, saying, "He's an intense guy, a very intense guy who wants to win, who wants to do it the right way. He doesn't want to mess around too much with the process, and you can respect that. He gets on us when we do something wrong, and he gives us a pat on the back when we do something right. And it's been more getting on us than pats on the back so far, but it's a good thing. It's good for our team."

James was also asked about Kevin Love's recent comments expressing frustration with his inconsistent role in the offense.

"I think it's a feel-out process for all of us," James said. "And it's a little more challenging for him than it is for me and Kyrie [Irving] because we get to handle the ball a bit more. Him being a big guy, we have to give him the ball. When he has his opportunities, he has to make the most out of them."

He said that as long as Love is assertive, his teammates will acquiesce.

"Kev is a guy, if he wants the ball in the post, he gets the ball in the post," James said. "He'll demand it, and we'll give it to him. For me, I definitely don't have a problem with it. It's a great equalizer to try to slow the game down and have a guy that can create opportunities in the post."

With everything the Cavs are trying to work on -- sharing the ball on offense, improving on defense, developing interpersonal relationships between the players and the coaching staff -- with little to show for their efforts other than a .500 record so far, is James' patience wearing thin?

"No," James said. "It's not starting to wear. It's only been 10 games. Not yet."

I read that and had the same reaction... He's saying his patience is wearing thin and he wants to win now... Then maybe he should start playing like it. He's had a couple sub par games in which we could have won if he played better, yes it is a team game but LeBron has also hurt us a couple games, but he's acting like it's only his teammates fault. I mean, I'm a huge LeBron fan and defend him a lot but he needs to watch what he says when he's part of the blame.

LeBron says this start is testing his patience... lol.. I'm glad our team is better but he needs to do less talking and more playing.. if he has avg games vs NY and SA we are 7-3.. he seems like he is talking down to his teammates through the media.. he has to watch that.. he needs to lead more by example and less by talking.. it has been quite obvious this year so far his energy or lack there of at times rubs off on his teammates.. he can't loaf back on Def and then talk down in the media or even directly to 1 of his teammates about lack of effort on that side of the ball... I hope he comes out tonight and has a big game it is obviously still capable of that... I do think we need to involve Love more and I think LeBron needs to make sure that happens so it lessens the burden on LeBron himself to score.. and he needs to get his back healthy

I agree, and well said. And don't get me wrong, I'm not calling out LeBron. He's the best in the game, and I completely understand at times we just do things that are going to make him frustrated.

But speaking about Wednesday, he played badly. The finger should be pointed at himself too when he's making critical mistakes, and just playing bad basketball.

We as a team played good enough to win the game. I don't want to say he's why we lost, but he didn't play good enough for us to win either.

LB can preach and talk all he wants, but he has to set the tone on the floor first. Not that I'm disagreeing with LeBron by the way. But, he's the leader, and when he's not playing well, he's got to shoulder the blame too.

I'm not that upset by us as a team. We're making mistakes, but that's expected. Guys are playing hard and trying. That's all you can really ask for. It will get better.

LeBron's return letter:

"We’re not ready right now. No way. Of course, I want to win next year, but I’m realistic. It will be a long process, much longer than it was in 2010. My patience will get tested. I know that. I’m going into a situation with a young team and a new coach. I will be the old head. But I get a thrill out of bringing a group together and helping them reach a place they didn’t know they could go. I see myself as a mentor now and I’m excited to lead some of these talented young guys."

He knew this was going to happen, so 10 games in he shouldn't be too surprised. In my opinion, if he "predicted" these ups and downs then I would much prefer he doesn't give the media bait about his patience being a challenge. Again, not really anything wrong with his comments - but as other posters mentioned, when he has a lot to do with our higher profile losses (NY & S.A.) I'd prefer he kinda keeps this stuff outta the media.

Player of the week one week, looking like a scrub the next. Get it together Lebron damn, he looks so sloppy out there.

watching the replay of the spurs game today.. lebron brings it up, dion and harris both wide open for a three.. pass went right by dion to harris. i concur lbj does not like dion right now

It feels very much like LeBron is feeling sorry for himself right now - and that is pathetic. He knew what he was getting into, and his championship years in Miami *should* have taught him truly how to lead. He's not leading right now. He's pouting, throwing a tantrum of sorts. Watching clips like the above, it's terribly disconcerting. He himself is not playing well enough and worse yet not putting forth the appropriate effort, and yet carefully blaming everyone around him.

I'm concerned. Just being honest.

LeBron's lack of effort and pouting instead of hustling back on defense sure is setting that good example a "leader" sets for the youngsters!!

Yeah, it's starting to get ridiculous.

Can somebody explain to me why he is taking so many perimeter jumpers? Why?
I mean, it's just not his game... at all.

I think Lebron is probably questioning if he left a year to early. Bosh can still play and Wade looks to be in better shape this year. McRoberts has been a decent pickup.

We got problems. Dion is mad as a hornet at Blatt. Lebron is mad at him for that, yet understands Blatt's rotations are terrible and Dion is being treated unfairly. Definitely need a team meeting. Lebron needs to tell Dion to "be a man" and play the game no matter what. Then Lebron may go to Blatt with the issues. Love is another problem. He can't be the man he was at Minnie and is acting depressed and sullen. Lebron needs to tell him to man up much like Dion and become the man he should be on a championship team. Then we go to Blatt and tell him to get plays spotting him up in the post some more. Maybe Love will make a better effort on defense.
