It's easier to have confidence when your team is up 10-20 points. You are more care-free about mistakes and are more assertive in decision making. When a game is close, you get more nervous about mistakes and lose that confidence because of fear of screwing up. This is a rookie/inexperienced player's main characteristic.
I am proud of Luke's performance, this is what we can expect if he can carry this confidence in a tighter game situation. Being the 8th man is much different to him from his Oregon days, where he was the #1 man... His performance in the college level was superb. That's why I believe we'd regret it if we ever trade him, because he's going to blossom, it just takes time to gain confidence...
