Matt Barnes agrees to 2 yr/$3.2 mil w/ Orlando (pg. 34)

Re: Matt Barnes Watch 2009

I can understand why we'd sign Barnes as a Sasha replacement, but I can't see why he'd be our first choice ahead of Kleiza. Whether Denver would match our offer or not, we can still make a sign and trade. This IS the team that traded Camby for a 2nd round pick.

Re: Matt Barnes Watch 2009

I think I'm more on the line of thinking that IBWT has, although not as against getting Matt Barnes. I'm not against acquiring Matt Barnes. I just don't think Cleveland should go at him super hard. If you can snag him at a cheap price, fine. Perhaps someone like Lee who lives in AZ, might have seen him play more and have a better overall opinion of the guy's game.

I have not watched a lot of Barnes' play, but IBWT makes a pretty significant point about the huge difference in tempo of the game between Phoenix and Cleveland. Look at what happened to Shaq when he was plugged into the wrong type of team tempo. I would agree that Barnes is an upgrade athletically over Wally and that's about it.

Unless we plan on trading TK/Jawad, we would be stacked at the SF/SG position. Barnes is definitely not a PG either in any sense. I just do not want to see Danny Green buried on the bench. I think I would rather save the BAE for Joe Smith as a backup just in case we cannot sign or trade for a stretch/combo forward. We have more pressing needs in the frontcourt than another wing player. We signed one in Anthony Parker, drafted another in Danny Green. Right there are your Wally/Sasha replacements respectively.

TK and Jawad will be relegated to reserve or off the team in favor of Barnes.....cmon now.

Re: Matt Barnes Watch 2009

I'm in favor of re-signing Smith with the BAE and giving the rest or most of the remaining MLE to Barnes (or vice versa).

Re: Matt Barnes Watch 2009

Joe could be signed with the vet minimum right?

Re: Matt Barnes Watch 2009

How could using the bi-annual on a player end up being a mistake?

You can never make mistakes using the bi-annual.

It could be a mistake using it at all. Maybe they should use the remainder of the MLE and then round out the roster with Vet minimum players and save the BAE. Might need it more and get better value next year. We may also need it at this year's deadline for a player that gets bought out.

Re: Matt Barnes Watch 2009

Barnes would be a solid addition... dude has potential.

Re: Matt Barnes Watch 2009

For those who saw today's summer league game (must admit, I didn't, but read through the forum's detailed description), you may now have different ideas about the Cavs needs at this point. Apparently, DJ wasn't overwhelming--he's the guy who is currently the first PF off the bench, until JJ proves he is OK. Is AV going to play the entire game?

Now, Barnes would not play many minutes at PF, except in certain situations against certain teams. But I think there is now agreement that he'd be better than TK as a wing player coming off the bench. As I see it, as things now stand, he would be the team's 8th man, only Parker and Z ahead of him coming off the bench. If we do resign Wally, he'd fight it out with him for playing time. That's not the end of the bench by any means...As far as Danny Green is concerned, he seems to have been a good choice, but it's not reasonable to think that he can be the 8th man. But hey, if he turns out to be an all star his first year, I'll gladly eat my words...

If someone has a more plausible option than Barnes, I'll be all for it. Of course, Kleiza would be nice, since he could legitimately play some PF, but until we learn otherwise, he's probably not realistic. There are other wing players out there, most of them have been talked about, but most of you don't seem any more enthusiastic about any of them. Sorry, I don't think that Scottie Pippen can be lured out of retirement.

Re: Matt Barnes Watch 2009

Well, what I think we shoot for is having JJ play well off Shaq, re-sign a guy like Smith, get Barnes, let Green make the roster, and pending on how the season is going...look to get a studdier (i know) PF through trade at the deadline (a-la Bosh). If we can showcase JJ, that may give us a much better chance.

It could take JJ and West to trade for Bosh. With Parker at the 2, you can have Green back him up for 2 years...and you have Barnes and Boobie to fill out the 2/3. Eyenga (even by watching 2 games) is looking like he may be more ready than we are hearing.

Barnes was probably the most consistent defender on a horrible Suns defense last year. He is a guy that Mike Brown can work with on that end of the court, because he is willing to play defense, and he has the skill set to do it effectively. The big problem for him on that end has been that he's never played for a defensive oriented team, nor has he been coached by defense oriented coaches.

On offense he does like to shoot spot up jumpers. He will slash to the basket as well. The big problem I saw with him on the offensive end last year was that he was incredibly streaky, and his performance seemed to come and go. But, he was playing on a team that was in a transitional phase for the majority of the year. The first half of the season was spent with Terry Porter, and most of the players had a hard time performing mainly because their point guard played horribly. Moving from that environment to break neck pace under Gentry can mess a lot of players up.

Personally, I think that Barnes can fit in nicely for the Cavs. I don't think he can play PF, unless they're playing against an incredibly small team. He is fairly lengthy, but he is light.
