Matthew Dellavedova

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I will not speak for Delly or anyone else, but as a Aussie I have no problem with the article. Anyone who watches us play sport realises we punch well above our weight and much of that comes from our competitiveness. I thought Leighton Hewitt was a perfect example of performances exceeding their natural ability. Delly arguably also fits this bill.
I get annoyed at people calling Delly "untalented" because that is bullshit and calling him "scrappy" can be patronising.
I think never backing down is a quality Australians should be proud of. Charles Barkley was amazed that the Australian team honestly thought they could beat the Dream Team. He was almost in awe of this. Anyway, to each their own.

Hewitt sucked.

I'm a huge Delly fan, but sorry, there's no inherent "competitiveness" that comes from being born somewhere. That's hogwash.

Agreed, but there can be cultural differences that can contribute to a persons competitiveness. Certainly having compulsory competitive sport throughout all levels of schools may be a factor plus identifying yourself as an underdog as being from a smaller country. The fact Australia spends more per capita than anyone else on developing elite athletes does not hurt either. I am sure there are other sociological factors that one could argue, but no one is born more competitive than anyone else.

The French have proven time and again that an inherent lack of competitiveness can come from being born elsewhere though.

No thunder just posted it, no issue there at all, my issue is with the author. The elbow ref was just one issue I had. I'm tired of Aussies being portrayed as loud mouth bullies and just as tired of the section of our community that seems to take pride in it. Specifically on delly I think he or anyone who knows him would feel insulted by that article but everyone is entitled to their own opinion as am I.

Going out to Cronulla much?

I don't like how the announcers call him "Matty" or worse yet "Little Matty". That's really insulting. If a guy is an NBA player he deserves more respect than that, especially when you look at how well he played in the playoffs.

Some people are compelled to assign gay fratboy nicknames to players, like "Bron-Bron" and "Matty".

Never understood it.

Andrew Gaze, former NBL great and current announcer and Delly admirer calls him 'Matty' ...

I honestly think it's just everyone's way of avoiding saying his last name. If they called him Matt or Matthew it would be weird, but calling him by a nickname gives them a pass. Delly is the nickname they should be calling him by, since that's actually a nickname.

I still not sure though why his last name is so hard for everyone. They almost forget the middle syllable.
