Matthew Dellavedova

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

the team has its first injury as backup guard Matthew Dellavedova tweaked his knee Tuesday and could be out a little bit, though the team did not announce his injury.

Sucks if Delly ends up being out for a while. He's an important glue guy for the team right now.

Everyone who claims that Dellavedova is limited in the NBA because he lacks athleticism is correct. There's no arguing that. It's why he was undrafted. It's why he's beat the odds for every minute he plays. Why does he keep getting minutes? My guess is because he never gives up and keeps trying to do what the coach asks. Imagine where Kyrie and Dion would be if they had those traits?

.... On a team of stars and former champions, Dellavedova is the one who has quickly earned the trust of first-year coach David Blatt. While Blatt has struggled to find consistent minutes for more established veterans such as Shawn Marion and Mike Miller, he's had no trouble using Dellavedova, who played 18 minutes in the opener against the Knicks and played 30 minutes in Friday's win over the Chicago Bulls.

Dellavedova is in many ways the perfect complementary piece to the Cavs' Big Three. He is a chameleon who can fit with most any other player on the floor. He keeps the ball moving offensively. He's a gritty defender (something the Cavs sorely need right now) and he doesn't feel an overwhelming need to shoot. In 48 minutes, he has taken just six shots (four 3-pointers).

And it seems apparent that, at least right now, Blatt trusts Dellavedova more than Mike Miller, who played only three minutes in the opener and 12 in the overtime game against the Bulls. ...

Somehow someway he needs to improve his lateral quickness to better stay in front of PG's .. whenever they see Delly in front of them, you can just see them thinking

"Okay.. It's Delly. Open lane to the basket or a foul. Simple hesitation move. Easy." and then they go and get a bucket/foul.

I love how Delly moves the ball on offense, but now he's just too limited on D to keep getting big minutes with our already defensively-challenged starters.

Well I thought the second unit was the one that played the right way. They were getting stops and getting to the basket, they just weren't converting. It was like there was a lid on the bucket, but they were running the offense and getting good looks.

Stinks Delly is hurt. I think he may be the only one on the team that understands the offense.

I was told he has a sprained knee and could be out 1 to 2 weeks. Re: Delly

This is a bigger loss than most people think. Delly is one of the few players in our rotation that we could reliably count on to play team ball.

He's literally the only one person that the cavs out score there opponent on when he's on the court

+8.2/100 possessions

Next closest is miller -5.9/100 possessions

You can tell why every coach loves the guy. He isn't shooting the ball particularly well at the moment and he is a bit slow footed to guard al ot of the quicker point guards, but the guy knows how to play team basketball. He knows when it is his time to pull the trigger and when to quickly swing the basketball. He isn't dribble out possessions, everything has a purpose, and you can guarantee he will always give his fullest effort. I noticed that blatt went offense/defense by subbing delly in, and he was promptly beat off the dribble by Lillard. I think Blatt will find that Delly is best served guarding shooting guards and slower/more physical point guards.

Blatt is going to have to board some of the guards because he is quickly running out of room in his dog house. :chuckle:

Delly was the only guy who had experience running a FIBA style offense, Irving has a little international experience that will hopefully translate at some point. I agree though, Delly understood spreading the ball around and Blatt rewarded him with extra minutes. Let's see what happens now that Delly is out of the picture for a little while.

Sucks but good that its minor and not a serious knee injury. Might open up some more minutes for Waiters at backup PG.

From what I've seen from Cherry, he is the antithesis of what we need. He looks for his own shot more than Dion.
I wouldn't expect Cherry to play no matter what the circumstances. I just wanted to use the opportunity to use a Fred-esque saying :chuckle:
