Mike Pettine

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm guessing that if Haslam keeps Pettine but fires Farmer the organizational structure will remain the same. A new GM will be brought in and he and Pettine will report directly to Haslam. Pettine will not report to the GM so the whole GM needs to hire the coach has less meaning in that situation.

I'm not saying that's the best organizational structure I'm saying that is how it is today and if the rumors are true that is how it will likely stay.

Sounds about right.

Pettine keeps his job, likely with some house cleaning is in order on the defensive side, Farmer is out.

Now theyre in a scenario where they'll have a new GM who didn't hire the coach and continue to be ass backwards as an organization.

I think the likely scenario was already brought up by @Soar . Farmer goes because his philosophy isn't right, nor is his record at picking players. Pettine's fate is reserved for the next GM to determine. Doesn't sound like a poor idea, if the plan is to get a GM in quickly.

The Redskins just hired Scot McCloughan while having Gruden in-house. It may not be the best solution, but I don't think automatically wiping the slate clean should be automatic in the Browns' current situation. What does the candidate pool actually look like? Is Jimmy willing to fire Pettine without a plan/candidate in place?

Bill Kuharich gets promoted to GM, Pettine stays

My prediction

If you hire a GM then why would you insist on keeping Pettine? Obviously the GM and the HC have to be on the same page right? So if that's the case then you would have to consult Pettine on who he would like as a GM then right? What the hell has Pettine done to get that kind of pull? Nothing.

If you hire a GM and he wants to draft a new QB with the top pick and Pettine wants to keep Johnny then what would you do? Are you freaking serious? So y'all would rinse and repeat the same shit we just did this year because..........?

I think many who aren't advocating for the immediate firing of Pettine next Tuesday are holding that position because you ultimately want the new GM to decide whether or not they want Pettine. In other words, give the new GM the decision, don't make it for them. What if a real good candidate is concerned with the look of firing another coach?

I personally don't think Pettine has done enough to stay, but I would understand Haslam not wanting to impose a coach search upon the GM unless the GM has already voiced that they don't want to work with the current coach.

Why would the new GM be concerned about the look a firing another coach that he had no input on being here? Should the new GM avoid drafting a QB because we've had 20+ since 1999? I understand that the GM will probably make the decision on if he wants Pettine or not but after watching the clear disfunction between Pettine and Farmer why are you giving Pettine the benefit of the doubt that he would be cool with another GM?

There's two ways we can do this. Hire a GM and let him do his job. Pick his coach, draft, etc. Or we could give Mike Pettine more say in the roster and coaching staff.

What if Pettine wants to keep Jim O'Neil? If you're a new GM how would you feel about that?

1) A new GM would be concerned because candidates are already looking at the recent coaching changes under the current owner's tenure and thinking, "this guy has a quick trigger and it's a bad situation". It was the reason the Browns didn't get most of the guys they wanted after firing Chud. This in no way compares to staying away from QBs because the perceived issue (Haslam) is still in the building making decisions, thus he has the power to impact any coach who takes the job.

2) Pettine doesn't get to decide whether he's cool with another GM. Quite the opposite. The new GM should and most likely will get the chance to decide what he thinks of Pettine. A new GM doesn't get that opportunity if the Owner makes that call before hiring said GM; you're actually taking a candidate away from the GM in that scenario, if you're the Owner. You can "let the GM do his job" without cleaning house prior.

I'd imagine hooking his ship to O'Neil would certainly send Pettine packing, regardless of the GM. Who knows what Haslam has decided to this point, though. Just because we've rendered our decisions/opinions on Pettine doesn't mean Haslam has. He's got a lot more at stake in this decision than you or I.

Please move on from this guy, Jimmy.

The general discussion about the Cleveland Browns' defensive failures this season has revolved around one issue: Is the system so complex that it demands too much thought and not enough play?

Coach Mike Pettine and defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil have both said that the system is proven, and it's not too complex. One could make the case that during the first half in Kansas City it was too complex because the Browns gave up 17 points. But the same defense in the second half put up a shutout, so it couldn't have been too complicated during that part of the game.

a recent story in the Buffalo News, ESPN analyst Bill Polian discussed the Rex Ryan defense, which is the system Pettine grew up in as an NFL coach and the system he runs in Cleveland.

To Polian, the system is far from simple. His comments related to the Bills' defensive struggles, and to complaints from several Bills players that the system was, indeed, too complex:

“You need veterans to make that defense work. First of all, the players thrived in another system [in 2014 under Jim Schwartz] – in a simple, straight forward, very easy to understand, very easy to communicate system where there was constant repetition of the same thing over and over again, taught in a very straight-forward way. And the techniques were geared toward what the players could do, what their skill sets were, and the plans were constructed around the players and what they could do. Rex’s defense is just the opposite. It is not straight forward. It’s exceedingly complex. There is no carry over learning from one week to the next. There’s exceedingly complex language. There are exceedingly complex checks that have to be made at the line of scrimmage. There is a guy designated to make those checks. It was ... Ray Lewis in Baltimore and it was ... Jimmy Leonhard with the Jets … I remember asking one of the Jets’ coaches during the offseason, ‘How in God’s name can you put Jimmy Leonhard on the field?’ He said, ‘No one else can translate the defense, no one else can get everybody lined up.’”

What's interesting is that Leonhard played such an important role for the Browns last season when he took over after Tashaun Gipson was sidelined with a knee injury.

The Browns touted him as a coach on the field. Evidently he was just that.

What's also interesting is that under Schwartz the Bills' defense ranked fourth in the league in points and yards allowed. Under Ryan, they have dropped to 16th in points and 20th in yards -- with largely the same group of players. The Browns under Pettine and O'Neil have ranked ninth and 29th in points, 23rd and 26th in yards.

I read in another thread someone rip on Pett because he once coached High School football, so I wanted to look into his past there. Found some gems in the photo department. Since it looks like he's gone this time next week, I'm putting some of these photos here:

Dad, right. Mike, left.

What's with the black and white photos, lol. It's not like he's 75 or something.

Probably a yearbook or program. It cost more to print in color....at least it used to.

So is there a thread where we get to talk about our next realistic coaching candidate? Or do we just use this thread ?

I'd imagine a new threads starts moments after the guillotine falls.
