New TV Series to watch

Are there any decent shows coming out this fall? Lineup seems a bit meh

So I finished The Leftovers, @David. This sums up the entire show so succinctly:

The issue of where the Departed went has long been on the minds of the showrunners, according to Perrotta (who also wrote the 2011 novel on which the series is based). "The first time that I met Damon [Lindelof], he kind of got very conspiratorial with me and said, 'You know where they went, right?'" the author tells Bustle. "And I said, 'Well no, because to me the Departure is a symbol for everything we can't know, and our job as humans is to tell stories that will satisfactorily allow us to get through our lives despite the fact that we can't know.' And he said, 'Well, here's what I think happened,' and he then presented the idea that there was kind of a rapture in the world, and that in some alternate version of our world, there's a much more traditionally apocalyptic show where 98 percent of the world is gone and the two percent have to survive. And I said, 'That's a really cool idea, but let's never, ever use it.'

And @howler1313, I caught The Deuce. Phenomenal premiere. Already looks to stand as one of those iconic period pieces ala Mad Men. That recreation of Times Square in the 70s was just beautiful. The acting was exceptional, the content bold and unforgiving and the character development is already gripping.

For a show to tick this many boxes this early in, I think it's clear that HBO has found itself another winner.

Semi-bold prediction: Maggie Gyllenhaal wins an Emmy for her role as Candy. I don't know anything past this point, but it's obvious that they're trying to break her down to build her back up and I can't wait to see it.

Just finished the 3rd season of Narcos. No Escobar, no problem. Show is awesome.

Think you're spot on. She's about to become the pornography queen with a pet tiger on her lap and a lit cigar in hand. Should be a riveting journey, no doubt.

Anyone watch The Last Ship? I binged the first three seasons. Loved it. I always dig apocalyptic shows for some reason.

There are parts of it I really like. When it's pure shipboard stuff, it looks pretty authentic. They've got some very good technical advisors. Otherwise, it's pretty much Star Trek on a naval vessel. Horatio Hornblower come full circle.which is still entertaining if a bit unrealistic.

Some of the characters though....that brunette woman on the ship who is the Captain's old flame is horrible. Least convincing character on the show.

But it's still a lot more watchable than some other stuff out there.

Tex was great. I personally didn't mind the doctor because she at least seemed like she could be a doctor. That other woman apparently puts all her makeup up before going all Rambo on shore missions, and her rather boney frame has no problem ninja-ing dudes double her weight . Ugh. Not my type, either.

I did like the redheaded woman who was the Engineering Officer, - she was really believable.

The navigator (especially), TAO, MAA, etc., all are convincing as well.

I agree about the early seasons being better. That Japanese captain was an especially good "villain". The Season 4 villains looks like the writers are trying to appeal to a different demographic, and the believability is really getting stretched.

Anyone else watch "Documentary Now?" It's a series with Bill Hader and Fred Armisen that basically parodies/remakes some famous documentaries.

Wife and I just watched "Juan Likes Rice and Chicken", and it was awesome. We hadn't even seen the documentary from which it was derived, which apparently was about some famous, incredible nitpicky sushi chef in Japan.

Yeah, you lose a lot if you're not familiar with the documentary from which they're drawing inspiration. We just happened to catch the first one, "Shady Passages" after watching Grey Gardens", and it was hilarious. But some of the others where we hadn't seen the original fell flat.

Armissen has a unique style and is legitimately funny, and Portlandia is a little right leaning
