Oden

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Oden eyes Cavs, Heat

Per Wikipedia:

Presumably, the Cavs' doctors will have at least a Wikipedia level of knowlege. And perhaps, the doctors used by the Cavs will have even more accurate, up-do-date information about that surgery and professional athletes than will the folks who wrote that article.

Bottom line: knees get worse, not better, over time. If, optimistically, there's a 50% hance he's healthy enough to play right now, there's a slim-to-none chance he'll still be healthy in a few years when we're hoping to compete. Unless he literally plays 10 minutes a game, 50 games a season, what little weakened cartilage there is in his knees will be gone again before you know it. He may get in 5 or 10 or even 20 games "healthy" and put up semi-decent numbers, but don't be fooled. Then there'll be the "Oden experienced discomfort in his left knee during practice today" and "Oden will not play tonight as a precaution" and then "Oden is out indefinitely" and then more surgery, or he'll just retire.

That may all be true. Then again, it may not be. ZBo and Amar'e, both big guys themselves, came back and have been able to perform at a high level. No offense, but I'd rather rely on whatever it is the Cavs' doctors think after they've examined him and reviewed his medical records. It is entirely possible that they don't like what they see, and we won't offer anything. That's fine. But I'm not sure why there is the rush on the part of some folks here to make a determination as if they already have that knowledge, one way or the other.

A. The Cavs doctors may, but too often management hears the player say "I feel great!" and the doctor say "Bleep bloop medical jargon blah" and decide to sign him anyway (see: Brandon Roy).

B. In Amare's case, the lesion in the cartilage was tiny, less than one centimeter according to ESPN's report. In Oden's case, we have "Chad Buchanan, the team's acting general manager, said the previous knee defects, or lesions, addressed during microfracture have healed nicely, but Oden developed two new lesions in a different area of his left knee, which were discovered." In other words, it's not just a tiny random defect with the cartilage otherwise normal and healthy. Oden's cartilage in general appears to be weak. As summed up nicely in an article here "If a player has a small isolated lesion and undergoes microfracture, then they likely will do well. However, if they have a large injury or have a full thickness defect in the setting of surrounding poor cartilage, then they likely will not do as well." Oden's case falls clearly into the latter category...his knees are in far worse condition than Amare's ever were.

Is this what the last surgery was supposed to fix? That knee injury he had was brutal, if this is what the last surgery fixed, could this simply have been a lingering effect of that which they missed the first time? Can an MRI check the current condition of his knees?

As for the rest, it sounds like the ESPN reporter is drawing a conclusion that doesn't come from the doctors. If we do sign him, I'll go with the opinion of the Cleveland Clinic doctors over the ESPN writer.

Re: Oden eyes Cavs, Heat

Just give him bionic knees and he is good to go.

I'm more of an adamantium injection kind of guy. It worked for Wolverine, dude never missed an x-men battle in his life.

Re: Oden eyes Cavs, Heat

Big long shot, but what if we were able to get Oden and he is fine and goes on to play like he was supposed to play when Portland took him first overall?

Whenever he isn't hurt, he always puts up good numbers. Kyrie and Oden, along with TT, Waiters, Zeller, whoever we draft this year, and whoever we go for in 2014...

Re: Oden eyes Cavs, Heat

Probably for they same reason that they were on Andrew Bynum's list. That reason is that the Cavs have cap space and can bid up his market price.

Now that point I can agree with. Someone else mentioned playing with Kyrie... but I'd think he would be just as comfortable playing with Conley... a friend he's know since AAU days would be just as appealing... a comfort zone on a contending team.

That was Portland management, not the Cavs' management. What makes you think Cavs' management will ignore the doctors they hired to check him out?

Again, you do not know this. If it is true, then fine, we don't make him an offer.

Sad part is even if that were true, it might not even be the most embarrassing injury of his :chuckles:

Re: Oden eyes Cavs, Heat

meh...i'm not too optimistic...these kinds of chronic injuries usually don't miraculously go away (see Brandon Roy, Andrew Bynum, etc.). Even if the dude can keep from re-injuring himself and stay on the floor, he'll probably be lacking in mobility. if the cavs can sign him for bottom dollar just to see what happens, then I guess it's worth a shot...but most likely he'll play for a few weeks and then re-injure himself or have too much pain to continue.

Re: Oden eyes Cavs, Heat

This will be waste of time and money if he signs with the Cavs. If he signs with the Heat he will become a dominant center.

Because Cleveland.

Re: Oden eyes Cavs, Heat

I really hope Oden can make a good comeback and have a good ending to his career. He was never really given a chance to show what he could do in the NBA. Z and Grant Hill made nice comebacks after long rehab. Oden's younger so any things possible. Hopefully Cavs can sign him.

Re: Oden eyes Cavs, Heat

Oden had a complete physical at the Cleveland Clinic 3 weeks ago, so Cavs docs have all the medical information they need.

Nex step --- GO preparing for actual work outs in front of the front office/coaching types.
