OT: Derek Jeter becoming the all time Yankee hit king

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I pass not only because I don't give two shits about Jeter, but what did he accomplish? He is the new hits leader for a team I despise. Why should I give a shit?

So... pass.

Nobody suggests you must care, but it's something that should be appreciated on it's own.. It's not like this is the Royals... It's the greatest professional sports team in America with the most tradition and history..

You may not have a vested interest in it, but if you're a baseball fan, and appreciate the sport and history of it, it's something that should be appreciated...

It's a 72 year old record...

The guy has won 4 titles, has quietly put up hall of fame numbers, while creating some of the greatest clutch plays of all time-- and has done so with class and dignity...You don't read negative press about Jeter.. He just keeps on producing, and does so in about as professional of a way as can be done..

only if you dont have access to ESPN has he done it "quietly".

The biggest story in all of this is that the fabled New York Yankees have yet to buy their way into the 3,000 hit club. Pussies.

He's not provocative enough to really be all over ESPN all the time... Tiger, Favre, Vick, Bonds, Clemens, A-Rod, Pacman are all guys that have gotten beyond ridiculous coverage for what they do (good and bad)

No reason to really associate Jeter amongst that group... Hell, LeBron got more coverage for not shaking a hand than Jeter has gotten as of late...

Derek Jeter is one of the worst interviewees of all time. Worse than Jhonny Peralta.

You bite your tongue.

Nothing tops Jhonny "Deer in Headlights" Peralta my man.

As much as I don't like him or the Yankees, I have to give him his props. He has been a pretty good player over the years.

He stole Minka Kelly from me and I can never forgive him for that. Granted, I probably never stood a chance of actually meeting her, let alone forging a relationship/copulating, but that is besides the point.

Apparently, you have a selective memory....

Apparently, John Battle just doesn't like Derek Jeter.

Derek Jeter passes Lou Gehrig, notches 2,722nd career hit

Derek Jeter(notes) has been on the path to Yankees' greatness for 15 seasons, but it wasn't until Friday night that he finally earned a spot on the front page of the team's record book.

Taking a 2-0 pitch from Baltimore's Chris Tillman(notes) down the first base line, the Yankees shortstop recorded his 2,722nd hit as a Yankee, breaking the team record of 2,721 set by Lou Gehrig in 1939. Jeter was greeted by a 2 1/2 minute long ovation from the Yankee Stadium crowd and mobbed by teammates who hopped the dugout rail as soon as Jeter rounded first. He later broke his own record with a RBI single in the fourth.

Though some want to debate the value of the record, I don't think there's any doubt that Jeter's accomplishment deserves praise from all around. Accumulating more than 2,700 hits in one uniform takes great health and perseverance and that he was able to set the record while playing a value position like shortstop only adds to the achievement. Keith Olbermann has a point in saying that Gehrig would have set the bar much higher had he not been stricken by ALS, but today's athletes can only clear the hurdles that have been set.

Jeter has been quoted heavily this week as saying that he's quite aware of the legend he was passing and that he was making it a point to look around and savor the moment.

To that we can only say: Enjoy and savor away, Derek. You've certainly earned it.

Just a beautiful scene at Yankee Stadium.. A single to right field in typical Jeter fashion is all that it took...

Congrats, Capt.
