Peyton Hillis is Jason Bourne

Re: Peyton Hillis contract saga

You would build a team around a wide receiver over a QB?

ONCE AGAIN, you're twisting my words b00bie.. quit doing that. I never said I want to build the team AROUND Blackmon, I would rather add him first, in order to get good pieces around a QB we draft down the road.

So you would pass on what you believe to be a franchise type QB in order to take a wide receiver first?

Like you can just scoop up a QB in any year or something...

I think RGIII is a good QB, I have my doubts about him being a franchise guy. Like I said, a QB needs playmakers, and we don't have them right now. So taking Justin Blackmon would be right up our alley.

Second of all, next year's QB class is good, Barkley, Bray, Murray all have loads of potential. You act like this is the one and only shot we have at drafting a QB..

Re: Peyton Hillis contract saga

Yes, I would certainly hope that the plan does not involve being right at the top of the draft again next year. So if I had the opportunity to take my franchise QB this year...I'm doing it.

Of course, taking a wide receiver is a great first step to putting them in the top 5....Instead of actually helping the most important position on the team.

Holy crap.. are you doing this intentionally?

He's not saying that he would take a WR first over a franchise type QB at all, cause he doesn't necessarily see RG3 as a franchise type QB.

A little bit, but he's basically argued RG3 would be great at 4 but doesn't necessarily view him as a franchise QB. So who really knows. :chuckles:

Re: Peyton Hillis contract saga

Good QBs make good receivers. Good receivers do not make good QBs.

Look at Fitzgerald in Arizona. He is a top 3 receiver in terms of pure talent, but without a QB, he's above average at best. Calvin Johnson saw his production across the board increase 20% when he had a full year of Stafford at QB.

Steve Smith in Carolina seemed to disappear as a WR after losing QB Jake Delhomme, and people assumed it was Smith losing a step and his career taking a turn for the worse, but, with Cam Newton at the helm, a revitalized Smith had arguably the best season of his career.

Let's not even talk about the entire receiving core of the Indianapolis Colts...

On the flip side, guys like Marques Colston and Wes Welker have developed into world-class receivers by being paired with high end QBs.

You need to find your QB. Until that, your offense will lack cohesion. I'd give up #4 and #22 if it meant landing a franchise QB. Everyone on here (including me) is guessing as to whether or not RGIII is a franchise QB. Presumably, Heckert and Holmgren can guess much better than we can. If they think RGIII can be the guy, then we need to get him. If RGIII isn't the guy, I don't know that Blackmon does much to make this team any better in the foreseeable future.

To get one of the top tier QBs you either have to trade up for one or draft one at your spot (usually in the top 5). Also usually you want to ID your QB so you know what type of WRs to target. If you get Blackmon and he has a horrid year with Colt throwing to him and then get your QB next year Blackmon may have checked out. Keep in mind that would be his second QB in as many years.

I would rather get the QB now (so I am not picking top 5 again next year) and then get a WR like Kendall Wright who may actually be better (for this offense) than Blackmon.

This I agree with. If you don't think that RG3 is a franchise guy than you don't take him. It's not worth drafting a QB at 4 if you think he will end up middle of the pack game manager.

I never said that either.. I said "I'm not sure whether RGIII will be a franchise QB or not"

What that means is, I see Blackmon as more of a "sure thing" at WR, then I see RGIII at QB. If Heckert and Holmgren decide that RGIII is their guy though, I will be very happy. There's more than one point of view heading into the draft you know.. You have to look at all your options.

Thought the title of this thread was "Peyton Hillis contract saga" and not "who do we draft at #4 saga"?

Browns forum = Every thread turns into "Who do we draft at #4, and you're stupid if you don't take a QB"

Cavs forum = Every thread turns into Irving vs Rubio debate.

Indians forum = Every thread turns into "Dolan is cheap"

Actually starting to get annoying. It's not that difficult to read a thread title & stay on topic.

I apologize for being the one who caused it..

Back to the topic right. I think if Hillis/Hardesty can both stay healthy we have a good backfield. I don't want to waste a 3rd on a RB after we spent a 2nd on Hardesty two years ago.

Re: Peyton Hillis contract saga

People seem to be already bored of Hardesty forgetting he came off a torn acl. They want a speedster and a power runner in the back field and don't see Hardesty as the speed guy so they want to draft Lamichael James or Pead.
