Plans for Cap Space in Summer 2013

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
What are the rules on front loading a contract? Say for example you wanted to give a guy 12mil over three years, can you give him 8-2-2 instead of 4-4-4? Seems like that would pay the guy the same money but give a little more flexibility for the future. Seeing as I haven't seen it mentioned, there's probably a hitch.

You can probably do 4.3/4/3.7 roughly, but that would be as extreme as you could go.

Here's Bob Finnan's take on the Cavs' off-season plans (published March 3rd):

-- My guess is the Cavs will likely offer shooting guard Wayne Ellington a contract similar to what Alonzo Gee got last fall — three years, $9.75 million. The Cavs will almost assuredly give him a qualifying offer of about $3.1 million, which will make him restricted.

-- Ellington might be the only player from the Memphis trade to hang around after this year, and that's not a guarantee. Center Marreese Speights will likely opt out of his $4.5 million deal after this year and become unrestricted. The Cavs have a team option on guard Josh Selby's $884,293 contract. They could kick him loose.

-- Ellington's presence has left Daniel Gibson the odd man out with the Cavs. Injuries, missing games for personal reasons and other factors have caused Gibson to fall out of Coach Scott's rotation. Lately, it's just that Ellington is a better player. Like teammate Omri Casspi, he's no longer in the Cavs' plans and will become a free agent at the end of the year. Gibson had a heck of a run here in Cleveland, most notably in the 2007 playoffs.

-- The Cavs attempted to buy out Casspi's contract, but one theory is that the veteran forward didn't want to forfeit any of the money owed to him. If the Cavs aren't going to save any money, what would be their impetus to buy him out of his deal?

-- One can make a case the Cavs should re-sign Luke Walton and Shaun Livingston to contracts for next year. Both are veterans who aren't afraid to speak up in the locker room. They haven't had players like this since Antawn Jamison and Anthony Parker left.

Interesting that Finnan doesn't seem to think the Cavs will retain Speights. I appreciate Speights' weaknesses, but I am very nervous about going into next season with Thompson, Zeller, Varejao (who cannot be counted on), and maybe Oden, maybe a rookie (neither of whom can be counted on) manning the front court if we are really trying to make the playoffs. Yeah, I guess we can roll with Luke Walton playing major minutes at the 4 again.

And no we aren't going to be able to sign a decent PF/C on a one year contract by overpaying him $8M or whatever. Maybe CG can work his magic and make another serviceable big appear by absorbing some salary (preferably on contract that expires in 2014). Maybe someone will scour the rosters to find a player who fits the bill?

(This is sort of off-topic, but Scott's increasing preference for playing some version of small ball -- even when the opposing team is playing two legitimate bigs -- is a bit annoying. Sorry, I like my bigs to be big, not wings masquerading as PFs. I know, Scott isn't alone in doing this.)

I think it is a foregone conclusion the Cavs try to bring back both Walton and Livingston. Even Walton haters have to admit at this point that he has been an asset on the court, as has Livingston, in addition to the veteran presence in the locker room. The two also play well together. However, I would only offer one year deals to both. You can offer significantly more than the minimum since the Cavs will be well under the lower end of the salary cap.

Ellington is an interesting case. My current thinking is extend the QO with the goal to re-sign him as FA in 2014, cap space permitting. That said, there may be a good reason that it would make sense, from a cap perspective, to sign him to a multi-year contract, if they can lock him into a reasonable annual salary. Not sure if a "Gee-type contract" is "reasonable" (read: low) enough though. If the Cavs don't re-sign Speights, I guess they will have the money available. I'd just rather see them spend money on a big than another fairly mediocre wing player, especially if they draft a wing.

Watching the clippers I don't think they are ready to compete for the championship, and Chris Paul is a free agent. Should be interesting if they get jettisoned early what paul decides. Griffin hasn't become one of the best players in the league. Paul may look at his other options. I wonder if the cavs could have the cap space and assets to aquire Chris Paul AND Dwight Howard this off season?

figure if the lakers fail to make the play offs and the clippers get jettisoned early they will probably want to play together somewhere.

Irving and Paul would be a small back court but with howard protecting the rim who cares?

Oh, sweet irony. :chuckles:

Al Jefferson would be a great fit but he isn't signing any 1 yr deals anytime soon, he would probably be looking at a 5yr 60million type deal.
Signing him or a guy like Pekovic would bring low post offense but they both will no doubt be overpaid and hinder our cap space.

I'd like us to Resign Livingston, Walton to cheap 1 yr deals. Let Boobie Gibson, Casspi walk
Pickup team option on CJ Miles and extend qualifying to Ellington...2 guys that can give you some outside shooting
Decline option on Selby, Let Speights walk and get an overpaid Brandon Bass like deal that the team will regret exactly like the Celtics do.

Draft - Alex Len. Won't be thrown into the fire right away with Varejao healthy. Can develop into a better, much more athletic version of Nikola Vucevic.

With the Lakers pick assuming they are in the playoffs, target a developmental small forward. Assuming guys like Porter, Shabazz, Oladipo are gone

Glenn Robinson - Has some question marks, but can defend and hit shots might not come out
LeBryan Nash - Has solid potential, 14,4,2 relatively young raw player
James McAdoo - Pure tweener, might turn into a productive guy on the bench
Alex Poythress - Like McAdoo lots of preseason hyped hasn't lived up to any of it.
Tony Mitchell - Don't see him playing on perimiter, can't shoot. More of a run and jump athlete
Doug McDermott - Probably will be limited to as a shooting specialist

Free Agency target a small forward that can bring you the exact type of production a guy like Otto Porter would
1. Earl Clark - Will get a decent offer, LA might not beable to pay with all the salary they have.
2. Corey Brewer - Great in transition, can hit 3's. Terrific defender
3. Al Farauq Aminu - Still only 22. Not a scorer but rebounds at a high rate for SF. No reason for the Pelicans lol to let him go

Best Case Sign Earl Clark 4 years 20million..the money not spent on Speights makes up for this
Worst Case sign Corey Brewer for 1yr 3million

For some depth throw a cheap 1 yr offer to Dejuan Blair. He isn't going to be getting JJ Hickson or Speights money but can offer potentially similar production. 1yr 2-4million at the absolute most

C. Anderson Varejao/Alex Len/Tyler Zeller

F. Tristan Thompson/Dejuan Blair/Luke Walton

F. Earl Clark/Alonzo Gee/Rookie/Luke Walton

G. Dion Waiters/CJ Miles/Wayne Ellington

G. Kyrie Irving/Shaun Livingston/2nd rounder

Notice our reserves and 12th men are Tyler Zeller, Walton, a rookie first and Wayne Ellington. > Dleague talent
One injury and we are not stuck playing guys who should be in a YMCA rec league.
Look at really good young teams like OKC for example, Reggie Jackson, Jeremy Lamb talented but at the end of the bench because of how deep they are.

Trying to get back to reality....here is The Bullshit Whisperer's take on the Cavs' plans with respect to their current roster (from his chat earlier today):

Comment From Jeff
Factoring in everything, whats your prediction on who the cavs starting 5 will be next year?
1:01

Sam The Bullshit Whisperer:
OK, prediction time: Kyrie, Dion, Tristan, Tyler and a SF to be named, with Alonzo Gee coming off bench. Either Ellington or Miles won't be back. Speights will. Boobie won't. Luke Walton won't. Omri won't. Kevin Jones will.

Sam The Bullshit Whisperer:
Oh, I forgot Andy Varejao. He'll be back and maybe come off bench, too. Depends on Tyler's development.

Earlier in the chat, he said he liked the idea of bringing Walton back next year.

This is exactly what I can't stand about The Bullshit Whisperer. He doesn't have any great insight on what the Cavs are doing any more than the standard fan. His "educated guess" about what the Cavs starting 5 will be next year doesn't have any reasoning behind it. On what basis does he think Speights will be back? Is he going to pick up his player option? Is he going to opt out and we're going to sign him to a new contract? I find it interesting that he says either Ellington or Miles won't be back, considering Ellington has a qualifying offer that we are definitely going to extend, and Miles has a cheap team option that we're probably going to pick up just to get over the salary floor. The fact that he forgot Varejao altogether is maddening to me. I would trust the opinion of a lot of people on this forum as to what the Cavs starting 5 will be over his.

Starting 5 if nothing major is done other than the draft ideally for me is Kyrie,Dion,Porter,TT,and Andy.........Livingston,Ellington,Gee,Miles,Zeller,drafted big...maybe Gobert and let him develop or try to get Cauley Stein

Does he realize Luke Walton has been here since before Jamison and Parker left?
