Need some recommendations. I'm on a 90s/2000s kick lately so give me your best flicks to watch.

Mothman actually sounds like a good choice, I just did Conspiracy Theories.

Gouri,

Did you see Dark Skies? Watched it recently and really dug it. Stuck with me for about 48 hours which is pretty good.

I was incredibly excited to see it. I'm pretty sure I saw this on release day in Hawaii. To me it was... ehh.. Predicable. I like the premise, as I love the concept of alien abduction, but then it seemed like we were on rails for a point, and that the ending was simply unavoidable. I don't like that aspect of the movie, but I do understand it. There were some plot holes though, as I recall. I just wish they had fleshed out the concept a bit better and focused more on either the horror aspect or the aliens.

Watched Mothman Prophecies recently too. Creepy, good atmosphere but the end was somewhat of a let-down. Would have enjoyed seeing more of the Mothman himself or at least hints of him.

Mothman is one that the atmosphere and setting is so intense that it makes up for everything else. The end was a let-down, and the Mothman should have been altered a bit to be something a bit more understandable for the audience. They obviously wanted to keep the idea consistent with that of an urban legend, but I think that's what made the move difficult to get into a points. I'd have rather they simply make a more traditional thriller with a more traditional antagonist.

The ending was very anti-climatic and predictable as well.

If you like those two movies you might wanna watch Fire in the Sky. There's also another movie, a found footage film that's not bad..

As far as some pure horror that deserves mention : Grave Encounters is often overlooked, and it's sequel is criminally overlooked (not as good, but still).

And if you want some trippy as fuck sci-fi movies, try Dark City, 12 Monkeys, and Donnie Darko.

p.s.
If you're on LSD (and with a sober friend), 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Trek The Motion Picture, and Dune (unedited Director's cut) are good for a long sci-fi based trip.

From best to worst, all are good, all from the 90's.. this is my take on IMDB's Top 50.. but again, in my own personal order (all are must watch)

1. American Beauty
2. Matrix
3. Forest Gump
*. Gattaca (not on the list, but it's up there for me)
4. Schindler's List
5. Good Will Hunting
6. The Shawshank Redemption
7. Transpotting
8. Fight Club
9. Braveheart
10. Silence of the Lambs
11. The Usual Suspects
12. Terminator 2
13. Titanic
14. The Big Lebowski (I like very few comedies, this one is hilarious)
15. Fargo
16. Goodfellas
17. Clerks (same as above.. great movie)
18. Reservoir Dogs

To me, I could watch any of those movies right now. They are ordered from best to worst. I am saying best in that "best" denotes personal impact, a movie I would watch that could actually change my mood or whatever I'm thinking about at that moment; not just 2 hours of wasted time.

A Beautiful Mind should be on the list (and in the Top 5) but it's not because it came out in 2001. I'm sure I missed something; but typically I've noticed Jigo and I have similar taste in films so he'll probably point it out.

Interestingly, I completely agree with the comedies above. Big Lebowski and Clerks are far and away my two favorite comedies from that era.

Top 3 one-and-done films? Not movies that are crap. Good ones that you don't desire to see again...

1. Irreversible
2. Funny Games
3. Requiem For a Dream (tied with a few others)

Jigo, you will watch a movie called, "The Corndog Man". So there are no build-ups, i will not tell you what i think of the film. After you are through, i want a comprehensive review.

Thank you.

Tried and just couldn't get through the 15-minute anal rape scene. Like, c'mon.... It was just way way over the top and I couldn't believe they put that shit in the movie. Made me very uncomfortable to watch a woman sodomized and beaten to a pulp in a tunnel for like 15 minutes.

That is simply not a movie for date night. You may as well open up with A Serbian Film or Cannibal Holocaust.

Cuban Fury 7/10

simple comedy about a fat man (Nick Frost) taking back up salsa to win the girl (Rashida Jones). Great performances make it rise above a mediocre script, especially from the supporting cast

In love with Rashida Jones. She's probably the only reason I ever watch Parks & Rec.

I'll watch.

Just watched Oculus on gouri's suggestion. Pretty good my horror movie standards. Reminded me a great deal of 1408. I hate spoiling horror movies more than any other genre, so I will say that I second his recommendation of this one.

Also watched Dallas Buyer's Club last night. Great movie. Obviously it was driven by MM's incredible performance as Ron Woodroof, but the rest of the acting was very strong. He goes from a guy that you feel horrible for to a guy that's really inspiring. I thought Jared Leto's performance was really great, but a bit over-rated. I didn't feel like there was a great deal of complexity in the role, whereas MM's character is extremely complex. If anything, I guess it was just a tough role for Leto because of the sheer amount of weight loss and the fact that he absolutely was a convincing tranny.

Isn't Oculus a new movie? I haven't seen a decent horror movie in a long time. Actually... probably ever. I'll have to check that out as well.

Oculus is new.

I'm not calling it The Shining or Rosemary's Baby or anything. But it's a solid horror flick comparatively.

If the Shining is a 10 by horror movie standards, this movie is probably a 6. If you want to grade horror movies over the last 10-15 years on a curve- since many have been bad- it's probably more like a 7.

Well shit, it sounds like it's a 4 (generous) comparative to all movies.

I'll still give it a go.

Occulus is made by pro wrestling WWE studios.. interesting business venture they've done recently

Other decent movies they've produced Barricade and The Day or something. Idk. The Day is post apocalyptic. Better of the two. But neither is terrible

Edge Of Tomorrow - 8.5/10

Well an Alien Invasion story again and Tom Cruise is forced to be a soldier in the front. Tom Cruise gets killed in the first few minutes that the war begins except he wakes again to relive the previous day in the base the day before the battle. The rest of the story is about them trying to use his unique 'gift' to win the war against the alien. Oh they did give a solid explanation for why it is happening to Tom Cruise.

The movie is fast paced, there is light comedy and full of action. The pace does not allow much room for character development but that is not something the casual fans will notice much. On the whole a thoroughly enjoyable movie.

I know I'm 5 years late, but what did you guys think about Mr. Nobody?

It blew my mind, fucking loved it. I'd say 9/10. Pretty long movie but I was so interested the whole time. Jared Leto was awesome. Really cool concept for a movie, I'm surprised I haven't heard about it before. Definitely recommend it, it's on Netflix.
