Mad Max: Fury Road - 7.5/10

Fast paced and excellent fight scenes. This felt more like watching the latest Furious 7 movie where in the action sequences were really good but the story is almost non-existent.

The movie is about Max (Tom Hardy) And Furiosa (Charlize Theron) travelling through the desert in a ginormous rig carrying the concubines on the evil warlord Immoten Joe. They go in search of "The Green Place" where water is available and the soil is fertile, while being pursued by Joe and his army of road warriors.

I've never seen any of the other Mad Max movies, so Fury Road was really my first true experience with the character. My biggest gripe is that you really don't learn much about him. It truly does seem like he is a supporting character in his own movie.

That said the movie was kickass. The visuals were incredible. Everything was intense and visceral. I was on the edge of my seat, and seeing the insanity of the Mad Max universe for the first time was definitely a lot to take in. I'd give it a 9/10, because I got exactly what I came for, and it exceeded my expectations in the action department. Just wish that the movie had focused a little more on Max.

Ex Machina 9/10

Movie was great. Started off a bit quirky, but then rapidly you're in and it's very enthralling.

Fantastic movie.

Chappie 7/10

Meh.. Good story, good characters, and good development but the direction of Weaver was pathetic and some of the stoic characters were a bit too childish for my tastes.

Overall a good flick, but could've been much better.

(both movies are available in HD torrents btw)

RockNRolla - 5/10

This has to be the worst Guy Ritchie directed Mobster movie so far. It is not terrible. It is just slow and so sub par despite the fact that the movie is loaded with great actors. Maybe the fact that I expected more led me to being disappointed - But this is one movie I do not want to see again.

I watched Mordechai last night, fully expecting to turn it off 20 minutes in. I thought it was hilarious. Sometimes the group think that hits the internet during a movie premiere eliminates forming your own opinion, which is a shame.

Depp as a foppish limp wristed British duke inexplicably trusted with solving an international art smuggling ring was so ridiculous it worked. But that's just my opinion.

Watching The Omen right now.

The recent one, with Liev Schreiber and Julia Stiles.

Why do people hate this movie so much? Is it just because it remade a classic?

The infamous first nanny who met her demise at the children's party was a shitty actress, but otherwise this is a pretty good movie.

I'd say Revolver, but yeah, RockNRolla is second.

I agree I thought it was great, and Schreiber/Stiles were also good. Mia Farrow steals the show, of course, but the movie's cinematography are top notch.

Because there are a lot of dumb women out there.

I never saw the first pitch perfect, but the ads for the new one looked terrible.

EDIT: I mean seriously, all of the critics were talking about how Fury Road was the ultimate feminist movie, putting a female character front and center (to the point where you had groups of dumb guys saying that it should be boycotted), and yet it doesn't get supported?

Give me a little more about Ex Machina.

People are generally too mentally lazy to boycott... So imagine how well one can expect a reverse boycott to work out?

As a high school teacher, I can vouch that HS girls are still the biggest demographic when it comes to pop culture. They decide what is cool, and then HS boys have to pretend they think it's cool, too.

Here's something I can't figure out.

Both you and I really like horror movies. I think it's safe to say that the both of us have good taste in movies in all genres.

So let's say we both agree that Interstellar, Clockwork Orange, Inception and the Godfather are all GREAT movies. Like not great as in "I personally really enjoyed it," but rather in a groundbreaking and widely appreciated as high level movies type of way. If you and I rated those movies as 8.5+ on a 10 scale, most people would agree. In fact, that's exactly where these score on IMDB with a very high sample size.

On the other hand, let's say we both agree that some amount of Poltergeist, The Ring, 1408, 28 Days Later and Texas Chainsaw Massacre are all great horror movies. I'm not sure about you, but when I rate horror movies my main factor is whether it's scares me or not. To scare me, a movie needs to (a) have some level of reality to it and it needs to (B) immerse me in the atmosphere. It needs to disturb me and make me feel like shit when I'm done watching because I can't get the idea out of my head that even though the events in the movie couldn't happen to me...maybe they could! My sub-conscious needs to trigger that fight or flight response even though I KNOW in my conscious mind that I'm not going to be pulled into a television set, murdered by a chainsaw wielding ghoul wearing a human skin mask, trapped in a hotel room that can actively drive me insane or get my face mutated by a little girl that crawls out of a television set.

There are horror movies that are also truly great movies like The Shining and Silence of the Lambs but I think it's safe to say that my sample list consists of very scary movies whether they're truly "great" movies or not.

Not sure about you, but by horror movie standards I'd give all of those 8+...EASILY. Those movies all make me react against my will to things like abandoned houses, hotel rooms, television sets, ringing phones, etc etc. Real visceral and instinctive stuff...they're EFFECTIVE. That doesn't mean they're as great as Godfather, Clockwork or Interstellar...but they are all GREAT horror movies.

So with all that said...how the FUCK are these movies getting 6 and low 7 range scores on IMDB.

By what standards are people rating these movies that there's such a disparity between what horror movie buffs and the average viewer think about horror movies?

It's a fucking travesty that 28 Days Later and Poltergeist get 7.4s on IMDB. Those movies are AMAZING.
