Nathan Fillion is incredible in Firefly.

It just really sucks that show only got half of a season, because it was really picking up near the end. Serenity was a fantastic movie, though. It was basically everything the Star Wars prequels should have been but weren't. I was really hoping that movie would have done better and led to either another movie or the TV series being picked back up by someone. Sadly, that wasn't meant to be. Still a great show, though, and it holds up well because it doesn't really rely on effects.

The movie didnt really get studio support either, dont know what it was but Exec just couldnt see the value. Biggest loss, i wont even watch firefly any more because i just get angry

I remember you saying this before, and it's one of the reasons I rewatched Serenity.

I'm really not sure I understand what you mean though.

I mean that it had heart, used practical effects when possible, characters you could relate to who weren't boring as fuck, snappy dialogue that was actually funny (unlike Lucas' cringe-inducing humor attempts in the prequels), a plot that made sense, and fight scenes that felt like they meant something instead of just looking horribly choreographed.

I'm not saying that the prequels should have had the same story as Serenity, but from a production and design standpoint, it was what the prequels should have been. It was a sci-fi western that had some goddamn emotion and love behind it. It wasn't designed to sell as many toys as possible. I watch Serenity and it reminds me of the love I had for the original Star Wars trilogy.

Gotcha.. I always thought you meant from a plot perspective rather than from a production perspective.

Yeah, that makes sense.

To me though, Star Wars was always an epic trilogy, like LOTR but not so fucking boring. When I think of Serenity and Firefly, I think sci-fi one-off; I don't get the sense of epic scale, an entire universe worth of scale, as I would with something like Middle Earth or the Star Wars "Galaxy."

Nah. It wouldn't make sense to expect Star Wars to have the same plot as Serenity. But Serenity nails its characters, writing, plot, effects, and everything else in a way the prequels just utterly failed. Given that they are both, in a way, sci-fi westerns, I think comparing the two is more than fair.

You feel that Star Wars is a sci-fi western?

It's interesting because I know a lot of people look at Han and identify with him and then put the story into that perspective.

But to me, I don't see Star Wars as a western at all, and I think therein lies the disconnect. In fact, I would neither classify Star Wars as western or as sci-fi, honestly. I'd say that's 100% accurate for Star Trek, but that's really the difference between ST and SW isn't it?

I don't think there's much science fiction in Star Wars at all. I've always felt Star Wars was an Adventure/Fantasy film, again, like LOTR.

I'd consider Star Wars (at least the original trilogy) soft sci-fi western with some Japanese film influence as well. You could certainly classify it as an adventure/fantasy film as well, but you could also classify Serenity in that way as well, as it's not overly concerned with actual science either.

I think people go with sci-fi for Star Wars because it takes place in a futuristic environment with space ships and laser guns and laser swords and what-not. It's not a wholly accurate description based on the genre, but it makes sense that people would go that route. It's not hard sci-fi by any means, though, and I don't think people consider it like that. It's more space opera than anything.

But again, most of that applies to Serenity as well.

The 1st season was a great world building season. Then they really didn't get to play in the world.

Weird no one picks that show back up considering how beloved it is...

Just, don't understand what is preventing them from moving forward?

Well, Whedon got roped into doing the first two Avengers movies, which surely ate up a ton of his time, and most of the actors have various other commitments by now. It's kind of like how Arrested Development has struggled to get everyone together for the Netflix seasons despite everyone on the cast wanting to do it. Too many different commitments in the way. They got it done once, but that was with most of the cast filming separately from each other. That wouldn't really work for Firefly, and it didn't really work that well for Arrested Development either.

Also, given that the movie didn't do all that well, people have probably been hesitant to try to get it going again.

This. Fans got the movie, which did a good job of capping off the story. I wouldn't expect any more.

Having finished his commitments to Marvel, I'm sure Joss is more concerned with pitching new ideas or just as likely fielding tons of offers to direct pretty much any big studio project.

Yeah, at least we can take solace in the fact that, while the movie didn't do that well financially, it was a fantastic movie for Firefly fans. The Operative is one of my favorite movie villains. Chiwetel Ejiofor was just awesome in that role.

Avengers: Age of Ultron 7/10

Finally watched this. It's fine. Didn't recapture the magic of the band getting together for the first time, but it was a fine action movie. I think I'm just getting bored of Marvel's superhero stuff (minus Guardians of the Galaxy, which was a breath of fresh air), as it just seems like they've shown me the best this will ever get.

Lots of "take you out of the moment" CG though. Disney needs to stop being stingy and actual pay to get that shit to look right, although it's hard for it to ever really look "right" when real bumps up against fake.

The biggest take away was reading about all the Black Widow controversy stuff (which I guess I missed while trying to avoid spoilers), and that is that the internet is dumb. If you took that scene as an affront to feminism then you're dumb.

Carry on.

Sorry one last Star Trek point. How could they kill Kirk like they did. Still cant believe how anyone could write an end without him dying with his ship. This is a man who gave up an admiralty to be a captain
