Ray Farmer Suspended 4 Games for Text-Gate

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Ok...that's a pretty iffy connection but sure. You make his job harder. Since when is that a great way to punish people? So not only will his job be harder, it hurts everyone around him and the fans included. Why not, say...fine him? Suspend him? Are these not better options that focus on "Ray Farmer" and don't cause collateral damage? Yeah, I'm mad at Farmer for breaking the rules, but that doesn't mean I think snatching draft picks from the team and making the team worse is fair.
Was it fair for the NFL to take away a pick from the Pats for Spygate?

The Browns FO screwed up. They have to deal with the punishment. We as fans have to understand our team made poor choices. It is similar to if the FO drafts poorly or signs bad free agents. The team has deal with the consequences of having a bad roster, and fans have to understand the team made poor choices.

I cannot even begin to fathom the NFL thinking if the punishment is "fair" to the fans. They couldn't care less, and they shouldn't.

Well to be fair, Farmer's job is to build a good football team. Losing draft pick(s) will make it more difficult for him to accomplish that, which may result in him losing his job. That would be like taking away a list of leads from a salesman. It does hurt him.

He could draft as shitty as Dwight Clark and make that full paycheck if fired. IMO, that's where it hurts Ray Farmer the most and where it doesn't yield residual punishment on fans, or the players (read: other Browns employees).

I don't know if it was totally fair, but probably more fair than doing it in this case. Cheating does not equal one guy texting to the sideline. Let's keep everything relative here.

Bolded is a ridiculous comparison. We'll have to agree to disagree. NFL should not give a shit about the fans that make them the biggest product in America? Yeah, all right.

The continued ignoring of the fact that a fine is the best way to punish a SINGLE GUY who broke a rule rather than an entire organization and their fans, is mind boggling here.

I feel like this isn't a very difficult thing to comprehend...the team breaks rules, the team gets punished.

And when that guy represents the team as a general manager, punishing the team is warranted.

This isn't just "a guy."

I find it hilarious you guys think this is actually fair to dock draft picks for a fucking text message.

Sure wonder what will happen to the Patriots for a guy deflating footballs.

How many draft picks did the Steelers lose for Mike Tomlin's little incident?

Oh, he was just fined for it, you say? Ah. I see.

Nothing. Apparently, the guy responsible for the regulation of the footballs bringing them into the bathroom and them subsequently being underinflated in a cold weather game isn't incriminating enough.

This is the most infuriating part of it. Everyone wants to jump on the Browns so hard, yet nobody wants to talk about the other hypocrisy. When the Browns do something wrong, everyone is hard on them. When they do something right, it gets marginalized.

Punish us, sure, but also hold everyone else to the same standard. Please.

amirite?

Saints lost IIRC two 2nd rounders for something 1000000000x worse than "Textgate." The appropriate individuals were also punished individually, with fines and suspensions.

I'm not going to freak out about the Browns losing a 4th rounder. I still don't think it's fair though.

Interesting rebuttal to our discussion about Tomlin and the Steelers. Any thoughts on this situation where one guy broke the rules and was punished individually for it, as he should have been?
