Ray Farmer Suspended 4 Games for Text-Gate

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Dying of laughter....

Huh, who knew that it would be a bunch of conjecture for nothing?

It was stupid to be so worried in the first place.

So, they punished the guy responsible. Good. The effect upon the team, players, coaches and fans will be minimal, as it should be.

Wow. Well done, NFL.

I wonder when the Farmer suspension takes effect? Can it coincide with the Draft?

Wondering the same thing myself. If the team is being deemed innocent (the punishment seems to indicate that), it'd be difficult to not have an adverse effect on the team itself. Looks like Bill Kuharich is going to be running the ship for a bit in any scenario.

So, you can text to the coaches all game long from other points in the stadium and only get a fine? Time for the team to step their game up, if they aren't already. I don't see the remaining coaching staff singing on the way out. Get it done right this time, Farmer, so you can't be implicated.

Okay...is this "official?" Because until it is, it's just rumors like the ones that said we WOULD be docked a draft pick.

Certainly, this take makes way more sense, though, as I've been saying for a while losing draft picks would be ludicrous.

Well, if true, I'd imagine the content of the texts played into the punishment. If it was just Farmer texting opinions down to his coaching staff, that's obviously a lesser violation than him texting strategy based on things he can see that the staff can't, which would have given the team a competitive advantage. The latter is cheating. The former is just stupidity. One should pretty clearly be punished more harshly than the other. I'm just kind of shocked the NFL agrees. Usually they never do anything right.

A hefty fine? Oh no! Have mercy on us, NFL!

Here's a little more for those that would like it. Have to say that b00bs was right.

Cleveland Browns general manager Ray Farmer is expected to be suspended for sending texts to personnel during games, but the team is not expected to lose a draft pick, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The Browns also might receive a hefty fine, the sources said. The league is expected to hand down its discipline no later than Tuesday.

Browns general manager Ray Farmer admitted to texting during games in violation of the league's electronic device policy. Farmer has not revealed who he texted, but sources and reports have said the texts went to an assistant coach and an unnamed team representative on the sideline and that the texts dealt with in-game strategy and use of personnel.

Farmer sent text messages throughout most of the season, a source close to the situation told ESPN.com. The texts took place for multiple games and continued at least until quarterback Johnny Manzielgot his first start in Week 15.

The texts did not necessarily deal with strategy, but with issues related to quarterback play, second-guessing of play calls and use of personnel -- especially the quarterback. The individual on the sideline was expected to relay Farmer's information/requests to the coaching staff.

Browns owner Jimmy Haslam said he stands firmly behind Farmer, who has owned up to his mistake, and the Browns will accept the consequences.

"Even though it's not a positive, it's not something I'm proud of, it's not a badge or something I'm wearing, but I'm definitely trying to take the positive out of it," Farmer said last week. "What did I learn? How am I better? And then how does this help me moving forward?"

Coach Mike Pettine admitted he was not pleased when the texts began, but he said at last week's league meetings that he and Farmer had talked it through.

"We both feel like we're very much on the same page and we're moving forward to make this team better," Pettine said.

Schefter is pretty much confirmation. The dude doesn't put bs out there.

The one's you prematurely busted a nut over?

:chuckle:

$250K fine, Farmer suspended the first four regular season games.

Most important thing, though:

Basic question. And don't take this the wrong way because I agree with getting punished for breaking the rules.

Would Farmer have been punished had he just walked down to the sidelines and let his opinion be known? or is the rule strictly barring electronic communication devices?

I don't understand why it's a rule when coordinators call plays from the box, and sub in whatever personnel they want using headsets tied directly to the quarterbacks helmet.

I guess I just don't get the rule.
