LOS ANGELES -- Clippers point guard Shaun Livingston will be out 8-to-12 months after tearing three of the four ligaments in his left knee while driving to the basket against Charlotte.

"It's probably the most serious injury you can have to the knee," Clippers physician Dr. Tony Daly said Tuesday. "He might miss all of next year."

Livingston had an MRI exam Tuesday which revealed tears in the anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament and lateral meniscus.

He also dislocated his patella, besides the previously diagnosed dislocation of his tibia-femoral. As a rookie in 2004, he dislocated his right knee.

Livingston was driving to the basket on a fast break Monday night, went up for a layup, and his left knee contorted as he collapsed in pain. A team doctor had to pop his knee back into place to alleviate the pain.

"He came down on the leg without any contact with anybody. It's a freak accident, that's for sure," said Daly, who has rarely seen anything similar in 24 years of practice.

He said the injury is more commonly associated with contact sports such as football and rugby.

Daly will solicit various medical opinions over the next two weeks, after which Livingston will have arthroscopic surgery, the doctor said. It wasn't yet decided if all three ligaments would be repaired at once.

Daly said Livingston did not tear an artery or damage any of the nerves in his knee, which can be serious complications.

"If everything goes well, he could be back playing as soon as eight months," Daly said. "My nature is to be conservative. I've seen people who've had this done by other people and it hasn't worked out."

Livingston, a three-year veteran who was drafted by the Clippers out of high school, has been hampered by injuries and has yet to play a full season in the NBA.

He sat out two games in January with a sprained right ankle. He missed 39 games during his rookie season because of a dislocated right knee, and another 12 that season because of torn cartilage in his right shoulder. Last season he sat out the first 21 games with a stress reaction in his lower back.

Livingston, who has been sharing point guard duties with Sam Cassell, was averaging 9.5 points and 5.2 assists.

I feel really bad for him.I remember when him and Telfair both entered I have always been a fan of him.I always thought he will be way better than Telfair. The injury is horrific and I hope he can rehab properly.

i watched the video, its pretty sick, anything with leg injurys grosses me out, ive never watched the LT hit on Theisman. Livingston was the man in HS, but i think he could have used some college experience, (he would have gone to duke) i remember i sent a picture of him from a magazine to his high school and he sent it back signed.

Yeah the right one..he's missed over 100 games so far I believe..

Telfair could have used college a lot more than Livingston IMO.He missed an oppurtuinity to play for Rick Pitino.

I refuse to watch this video - I just know it will be rough. I actually heard the audio on the radio this morning and you could hear him screaming in pain on the Clippers TV broadcast. I hope he can come back some day but it sounds like he will always have chronic knee problems.

Dont forget about the Wisconsin player to dislocated and broke his elbow. That was sickening.

Remember Bryant Young on the 49ers, the runningback's helmet hit his let and snapped it. :puke:

Nothing will ever beat Tim Krumrie's leg snapping and flopping around in the Bengals/49ers 2nd Super Bowl meeting. That's #1 on my list of nauseating sports injuries, just edging out the LT/Theisman leg snap.

Dont remember that one, but the Jason Kendell ankle snap and running on the snapped ankle was very nasty.

Yep, that was definitely a rough one too. Krumrie's might have been a little before your time cali - I wanna say around 87 or 88? It used to be on youtube but was removed for causing mass vomiting.

From his entry in wikipedia:

Krumrie may perhaps be best known for suffering one of the most dramatic football injuries ever televised, a shattered leg during Super Bowl Super Bowl XXIII against the San Francisco 49ers. While trying to tackle 49ers running back Roger Craig, the cleats on his left shoe caught in the grass and the rest of Krumrie's body was spun around nearly 180 degrees. He suffered two breaks in his tibia and another in his fibula. A 15-inch steel rod was surgically implanted to stabilize the leg, and amazingly, Krumrie was ready by the next training camp and played 6 more years.
