So long, David Griffin

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I feel differently, just because of how quickly they pulled an about face and publicly declared Millsap wouldn't be traded so soon after the Korver thing. I think they realized they screwed up after their players and fans reaction to what happened. If they truly thought Millsap could nab them that, they would not have taken him off the block so far away from the deadline , because they understand like anyone else that the best offers don't come until basically the time of the year were in right now.

I think they were ready to blow it up and we're going to start that process with Korver but now it has backfired. If anything, they regret trading Korver so soon and they had to take Millsap at least publicly off the market because once teams saw the Korver trade they were thinking firesale and Millsaps value took a bit.

I think they're gonna max Millsap out in the summer and then could trade him as early as next deadline. In an attempt to preserve his value a bit , I'd imagine.
Perhaps they regret trading Korver for what they did and when they did... I think your argument about the fire-sale is very true. I do not necessarily, though, think they regret trading Korver in a vacuum. It may have been better for them to move Millsap first for a real return and move Korver afterwards.

Nonetheless, good discussion! We agree completely on Griff. He's an awesome GM.

I haven't said anything against the bolded once.

Was just going to acknowledge that in a massive multi quote reply to a post of yours upthread. Overall though, feel like the discussion on all sides has been pretty civil and with detailed perspectives, with the end result being that most here have differing takes on individual moves and sequences of moves, but agree in totality Griff is at worst, an above average GM.

Definitely.

Griff will eventually have a shot at the draft, lottery picks and all.

I don't think we're quite set up like the Spurs, but I also think we have a chance to at least be a good team for a long time. Our title window may be 3-4 more years, but that could be extended depending on how high Kyrie eventually ascends , just exactly how good "old man Bron" ends up being, if Griff can find a couple gems where they shouldn't exist(example: Cedi Osman could be Kukoc or Peja Stojakovic, or he could be white, turkish Christian Eyenga :chuckle::chuckle:, or somewhere in between as well...if he ends up being great then that could be a big deal for our window!)

What Kay, Cedi, and Derrick Williams turn into will be key. And will loom largely in how we are able to sustain our championship window and our perceptions and grades of Griffin.

The reason Kay is not ready to meaningfully contribute yet in a playoff race and then in the playoffs is not because of his height and skillset. It's because of his inexperience as an NBA player in his first year. So just because we are seeking to upgrade behind Kyrie for this year does not mean that Kay should be dismissed as a contributor in years 2-4 of his career. Time will tell with that. It's to early to count on him to do that, but also way to early to write him off simply for not being ready to impact this year.

Cedi, via reports from trusted friends of RCF, has certainly not lost any value around the league as a trade chip over the past 1.5 years. If he can come over here and provide cheap, but meaningful contributions off the bench for 3-4 years, that will be huge. Or if he's traded, we have to see what the return is. It's been implied that there are teams who are definitely aware of him and covet him. He's not like a Kaun(old, ultra limited physically) who we stashed for almost a decade. He's young and has a definite NBA future.

Williams, if he can continue to fit in and improve, could be huge, provided that when do sign him to an official(non 10 day contract) deal, we can convince him to sign through the end of next year, delaying a re-entry into FA while workshopping his game in the presence of LeBron and some solid winning vets.

S
(Also not a fan of the Richard Jefferson contract, but I get why they did it. Almost impossible to get away from with the way he played in the FInals...but he's probably not gonna be contributing in two years while still under contract).

The third year of Jefferson's contract is non-guaranteed. Cavs will be able to cut bait at that point if they want to. We're only on the hook for the rest of this year and next year.

Even if RJ has a lesser role next year, he still can contribute. Still can get up and dunk. Still runs and cuts a lot. Another year older shouldn't fundamentally alter his ability to shoot, so hopefully he has a bounce back year(better yet bounce back 2nd half) with his 3P shot.

In many ways, RJ as our 11th or 12th guy next year(playing 8-10 mpg instead of 20) might be better for us than him as our 8th-9th guy this year.

I like RJ on this team; he's a great vet to have in the locker room.

However, he strikes me as a guy who doesn't want to hang around if he can't be productive.

If he doesn't get the shot falling late in the year and in the playoffs, I can see him walking away from the game this offseason. Especially having a baby recently and expressing that it's hard to be away from the family on road trips on his podcast.

Williams signing was a great move, and he's provided some instant help to our offense - but I think there's almost no chance that he is here next year. We won't have the money to offer, and his age/talent will get him a big offer in the offseason unless he becomes a total bust with the Cavs.

Willams only got $5 million from the Heat last year, and then fizzled out.

I could easily see Williams taking up most of our taxpayer MLE(saving some for Cedi) tons two year deal with a player option in year 2.

I doubt he gets many other offers , and he was the #2 pick so it's not like he's been playing on minimum deals his whole career. He would be so much better off playing here for a year or two for a little bit less money while showing he can be a long term winning role-player on a contender.

I think there's a really good chance Williams is back next year.

I agree I think he can take less next year for a much bigger payday down the line. If he gets too greedy too early, he could be looking at less then MLE the rest of his career.

Indeed, I think one reason to add Williams was to see if RJ rebounded seeing less minutes. He talked last year about how he was best 15-20 minutes/night.

His last season in Dallas it was 16.8. Last year it was 17.9. Now it's 19.5 mpg. That's the exact opposite trajectory you want for your old players. (duh) But the thought is with less time he might recover for the playoffs.
