The 2014 Cleveland Indians

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Guilmet had been DFA'd right? Obviously he wasn't going to clear waivers if somebody was willing to give us anything for him.

Define 'anything', because a 24 year old in A+ ball is only slightly above a more tarditional defnition of 'anything'. He is the legal business equivalent of a case of beer.

I'm just saying someone would have picked him up. He was already gone.

The Indians acquired right-hander Duke von Schamann from the Dodgers in exchange for southpaw Colt Hynes. The Dodgers' 15th-round draft choice in 2012, von Schamman posted an 11-7 record and 4.67 ERA in 27 outings (23 starts) between Class A and Double-A last season. In his first start of 2014 for Double-A Chattanooga, von Schamann, 22, limited the opposition to two hits over seven scoreless innings. Hynes, 28, surrendered seven runs on nine hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings with the Tribe this spring.

At least they traded a cool name for another cool name. Boobie, confirm or deny great facial hair on this one. Has been sorely lacking in the system since the departure of Eric Berger.

Horton wasting no time, he's going to the Duke.

The Duke leads the league in saves, strikeouts per inning and hit batsmen...This guy threw at his own kid in a father-son game.

Not to make this whole thing about the Wahoo incident, but a guy is on ESPN 850 who leads the group trying to change Chief Wahoo and the Indians said:

- 60% of the Cleveland fans are racists; and
- The City of Cleveland is a racist City.

:chuckles:

Not too far off on his notion of Cleveland- NE Ohio has gotten better but let's not forget this is the place where cities were sued for systematically keeping minorities out. We got a checkered racial history and there is still work to be done. I still encounter racism on a regular basis.

As for 60% of Tribe fans, well, I have no idea what his scientific basis for that number is. He is entitled to think what he likes but at least everyone can claim they are in the 40%, no? :chuckles:

Olbermann is a noted doucher but it's a good clip.

He lost me at "popular" American sports franchise...:chuckles:

Yea saw this last night, I knew the Sockalexis story was a cover but didn't know the Indians were named after the Braves till this.

Whole thing never made much sense anyway as Sockalexis was only dominant for half a season in 1897 before jacking up his ankle up jumping out a brothel window.

I'm starting to think if Chief Wahoo goes might as well hit reset on the name entirely

Indians isn't an offensive name, IMO.

But the Chief Wahoo is just so played...

Time for something new, preferably less racist. While still paying homage to our racist history.

He lost me at "popular" American sports franchise...:chuckles:

The 'popular before that cheapskate Dolan bought them and ran them into the ground' notation is supposedly implied, I assume.

Trying to figure out how Olberman's writers could do such a thorough job of lifting from Joe Posnanski's research and writing on this yet simultaneously fail to either credit him or note his further research that yes, at one point they were unofficially nicknamed the 'Indians' due to Sockalexis and there is, even if small, a historical nugget of truth to it.

Oh yeah, I think this was posted here but here it is again anyway- Joe Posnanski's writing on this from earlier this month. Good stuff about what he has dug up about the team name:

You know what's run its course? This conversation.

I already closed one thread on it because it was starting to get out of hand. It's clearly starting to get phased out, so let's phase out the conversation on it already & drop it.

Well, I would argue that it's a huge, glaring issue that should continuously be talked about until it's been completely dealt with. The fact that there are still people who support the Chief Wahoo logo shows that enough isn't being said/done. The franchise could end this by simply banning the logo all together, unsure why they haven't done it yet.
