The 2014 Cleveland Indians

What an odd extension. Medium risk high reward though I suppose.

The two club options make it a pretty enticing deal.

Seems like a pretty low-risk move. Even if his batting proves to be a fluke, it seems unlikely that his defense and game calling were. Russell Martin got 2 years $15 million from the Pirates prior to last season after posting a slash line of .224/.317/.405 in 2 seasons for New York.

We are getting him for less than $4 million/year and added 3 years of team control.

It will be interesting to see what they do once Giambi can come off the DL. I really like the versatility of our roster and I'd hate to send Chisenhall down or cut Johnson loose.

In fact, I wouldn't mind it at all if they just fabricated a season long DL stint.

While I don't necessarily believe Giambi should be on the roster, getting rid of Elliot Johnson would not be a big deal at all.

While he doesn't bring much at the plate, I like having versatile defenders on the bench. It gives us a lot of flexibility in resting guys as well as shifting players around in-game.

Watching Gomes go oppo the other day against San Diego was so impressive, his swing looks so good right now.

Really like the move to add team control. Would love to get a few FA years off of Kipnis too, but I'm less optimistic for that.

I think it's only "odd" because:

A) It wasn't expected

and

B) It came so early

I actually prefer they get things like this done earlier than later. We locked him up at what will be a reasonable price for defensive catcher, even if his offense declines a little bit, instead of waiting & taking the risk that he plays himself out of that price range.

Edit. I'm gonna make a new thread for this because it doesn't really fit anywhere else.

Not sure why Heyman would think he has a good chance to be up soon, though Lastoria chimes in:
