The Brian Hoyer thread...

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Finally, it takes the starting QB going down before they put in someone who can be a threat on the ground.

Who is the "starting QB" and who is the "threat on the ground"? You are not talking about the Browns, right ?

We honestly could be looking at a Connor Shaw start on Sunday.

My goodness.

I hope he just comes out and throws for 300+ and 4 TD's.

How awesome would the CLE media be leading up to the draft after that?

Agent: Browns have shown interest in re-signing Hoyer

With their options limited under center, the Cleveland Browns have reached out to Brian Hoyer about a contract extension.

"We never got to the numbers part," Joe Linta, Hoyer's agent, told the Akron Beacon Journal on Saturday. "They called and said they were interested in bringing him back."

Set to become a free agent in March, Hoyer is scheduled to meet with coach Mike Pettine, general manager Ray Farmer and new offensive coordinator John DeFilippo in the coming weeks. What they tell him is likely to determine whether Hoyer is willing to stick with a Browns team that turned to Johnny Manziel down the stretch.

"I think the only thing that would make him not (want to) come back is if they said Manziel or whoever we take in the draft or whoever we sign in free agency is going to be the starter and you will only be the backup," Linta said. "I think that would probably drive him away a little bit.

"If Pettine said, 'Hey, it's going to be an open competition again between you and Johnny,' great, let's go. ... (Hoyer) wants to play. The kid wants to have an opportunity to compete and play."

An open competition feels likely after DeFilippo wondered out loud last week if his "starting quarterback's in the building right now or not," before team owner Jimmy Haslam peered past Johnny Football to declare "we've got to get a quarterback and got to get it fixed."

Hoyer didn't look like the solution, either, down the stretch, with his play crumbling after a promising first half to the season. Faced with a barren free-agent and draft class, though, the Browns don't hold the cards when it comes to rebuilding their quarterback room.

Seriously, though... I think he is a bottom half starter in the NFL, always have the past two years, and the Browns still need somebody who isn't Johnny Manziel.

I still think Hoyer gives the Browns the best option to win next year. No sense in acquiring another mediocre quarterback that isn't familiar with the Browns and will have to earn the respect that Hoyer already has.

exactly. obviously Hoyer is not super popular with a bunch of the people on here, but unless another QB becomes available either in the trade market or FA, Hoyer is most likely the browns best bet.

Would love to end the manziel experiment, and draft/acquire a QB that just needs to sit for a year and learn

I'd rather have Hoyer to open the year with Manziel and (insert name from the mid-rounds) than Manziel, a high pick, and Shaw. The key is "the front office" backing away from the unhealthy obsession with Johnny Drunk Lately.

I'm not sure you can prove they still have an unhealthy obsession with Johnny.

Reopening contract talks with Hoyer is only proof that most feel that Johnny, at the very least, needs more time.

I have a feeling that come the start of the year, Manziel will more than likely be the 3rd QB behind either Hoyer or FA and Shaw.

I'm not sure I could watch an entire season of Hoyer, Manziel, and Shaw again.

Although, it may just be the true key to success in the long run...

Edit: Nah, that'd be just letting Manziel do his thing from day one (fail miserably).

I actually think the play here is to have JFF start and have Shaw back him up. Let's get this horrible year-to-come over with, and if we are pleasantly surprised with the QB play, we can move on to our other half-dozen needs.

I see Manziel as 93% chance of suck and 7% chance of turning the corner.
I see Hoyer as 0% chance of suck, and 98% chance of mediocre, with very little chance of anything higher.

I think I would opt for Manziel just to make sure he isn't the guy, instead of 2-3 years of Hoyer keeping us just competitive enough to amount to JACK SQUAT.

well Boobie, why not? I think this season is setting up to be a disaster, but obviously I am not in the loop and I don't follow it too closely.

I think the argument for signing Hoyer is to make sure some of our vets are happy, so they don't feel like they are playing for nothing. That works for me too, if we are building a winning culture, I get it. It's just kind of "ho hum" as a signing, but the dude does work hard and it does rub off on other players.

I actually just can't see how this ends well either way, like I can't comprehend the bullish case. The best I can come up with is this OC is a guru who develops Johnny, our running game continues to be the bedrock, we draft a WR with one of our first rounders (and maybe a TE with the other? Maybe a stud DLman like that florida player?)... I juxtapose that against Hoyer starting, and I am sure we will start out better, but he was playing up to his ceiling in the 1st half of the year and even if he does that all year, we probably go 8-8... So I would rather have the 7-9 with hope (Manziel showing promise), or the 3-13 with no hope for Manziel but the plan to get a QB that our OC can (in part) help select, versus the 8-8 or worse with Hoyer.

I mean, frankly, this is the kind of thing that management should be able to get a pulse on. Do our team captains dig Hoyer enough where they can get behind him leading the team? It worked early on. Obviously they hate Manziel, but it's on him to EARN their respect, and that comes through the right actions and the right results on the field. If you are convinced that a focused, competitive Manziel will be mediocre-at-best anyway (I am unsure), then I can see why you think Hoyer is in play.
