Re: The Cleveland Cavaliers Magic Number Thread for Most Ping Pong Balls in May 2011.

Fortunately (?), the Cavs own the tie-breaker for having been swept by the T-Wolves. So, the T-Wolves really have a 2-game lead in the loss column. I still think it will go down to the wire, with so many of the Cavs opponents having nothing to play for toward the end of the season.

From the Wikipedia link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBA_Draft_Lottery

"In the event that teams finish with the same record, each tied team receives the average of the total number of combinations for the positions that they occupy. In 2007, the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Portland Trail Blazers tied for the sixth worst record. The average of the 6th and 7th positions in the lottery was taken, resulting in each team getting 53 combinations (the average of 63 and 43). Should the average number not be an integer, a coin flip is then used to determine which team or teams receive the extra combination(s). The result of the coin flip is also used to determine who receives the earlier pick in the event that neither of the tied teams wins one of the first three picks via the lottery."

Right now I'm more concerned that teams like Charlotte and Milwaukee keep better records than the Clippers. That's getting a little too close.

Milwaukee lost to Chi tonight, Charlotte won and Clipps losing to Tor at the half 44 to 43. Come on Raptors!!! BTW - Detroit won.

I'm not so worried about being the worst team in the league as much as I want the Clipps to either hold on to their position or get worse as I think their pick will be a bigger addition to the Cavs success and rebuild. Ok so we dont get the #1 overall pick, Cavs then decide between Barnes or Williams. I am actually think a Williams (SF) or Barnes (SG) and Walker (PG) draft would be much better than a Irving (PG) and who ever is left at 8 that's not a PG.

Washington only has 17 wins and we play them twice before the end of the season. Winning both of those would pull us only a game behind Washington. I would be more concerned about catching Washington then I would be about catching Minnesota.

Its the other way around, even if the Wizards get the 1st pick in the NBA draft, they are less likely to pick Kyire, since they already have John Wall. I would be more worried about the wolves, because they really need a pass 1st point guard. Even though they drafted like 3 or 4 PG's couple of years ago.

We are getting too close for comfort. Our remaining schedule is very easy too. We beat the Heat, now let's close this thing out going 1-8 (win the last game of the season..... to build momentum for next year of course).

Remaining schedule:

@ Cats
@ Wizards
@ NY
vs. Cats
@ Raptors
vs. Bulls
@ Bucks
@ Pistons
vs Wizards

All of these games besides Chicago are VERY winnable. That scares me. We are only 1.5 GB of Minnesota. Their schedule is tough..... Bulls, Heat, Grizz, Nets, Suns, Nuggets, Suns, Rockets.

I think we may end up with the 2nd most ping pong balls. :(

just listened to Brian Windhorst who spoke earlier today on The Really Big Show and from what he said the cavs r trying to figure out a way to get a 3rd lottery pick in this years draft some way some how!

Even if Washington gets the top pick, having John Wall won't stop them from trading the rights to Irving to the highest bidder, of which there will be many, or just trading down from the top spot.

I am also starting to wonder if the Kings would take Irving over Williams. At first, I thought Irving would be the obvious choice for them, but maybe not if Williams stock keeps going up.

They do have a good set of guards.... Evans, Udrih, and they just traded for Thornton. Evans is their franchise player and he needs the ball in his hands. Not sure how well he would fit next to a ball dominating true PG like Irving.

So they do have some good guards and they are very weak at PF. Jason Thompson is their starting PF putting up 8 and 6. They aren't great at SF either. Casspi looks like a solid role player, but nothing more than that.

IMO, they are much stronger at guard than they are at the forwards, which makes me believe they may take Williams over Irving.

Don't worry, this team is on a MISSION! Today was just their guilty pleasure, all back to business next game.

I hope so. Losing to the Cats and Bucks will help out our 2nd pick as well since the Clips are only a game or two back of both of them. Hopefully Baron shuts it down and rests that back.

Re: The Cleveland Cavaliers Magic Number Thread for Most Ping Pong Balls in May 2011.

Anybody know what the tiebreaker would be if we end up tied with the Wolves? Is there even a tiebreaker for the lottery, or would we both get the same amount of ping pong balls?

If it is head to head, Minnesota beat us both times this year. But in 03, didn't us and Denver tie and both receive the same amount of ppong balls or am I mistaken? That would lead me to believe there is no tiebreaker.

Re: The Cleveland Cavaliers Magic Number Thread for Most Ping Pong Balls in May 2011.

The "tiebreaker topic just got covered." If teams end with the same record, the ping pong balls just get averaged between the two spots in questions, so both teams get the same number of balls.

Re: The Cleveland Cavaliers Magic Number Thread for Most Ping Pong Balls in May 2011.

Hey guys... is it really that big a deal to get the most ping pong balls? It's a luck draft and the amount of difference between balls is very small. We have two good picks that will probably be between 1 and 8. If we're looking for a third in the lottery, that's possibly 3 in the first 14 slots? Chill out! It's okay not to have the best odds because we can win out on one of those and still use the others as trading pieces if they don't work out.

Re: The Cleveland Cavaliers Magic Number Thread for Most Ping Pong Balls in May 2011.

Well it is pretty much the most important thing (or the only important thing) we have to think about for the rest of the season. Yes, I want the best chance possible of getting Irving.

yes. because its not just the 5% extra the team gets for the first overall pick its the percentage difference they then have over other teams to end up with the 2nd and 3rd pick if things go bad. plus even if the worst happens the cavs still end up with the 4th overall pick. So its not just the top pick we should consider its the picks after that.

honestly i expect the cavs to end up drafting 3rd and 9th. or some such bullshit
