The Jonas V thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
There was alot of talk about JV's agent not willing to give the cavs clear details of his buyout arrangement with his team. Thats really the case that makes him a non-factor for the cavs. They didn't want to waste a pick that might stay abroad for a few years a la rubio, they needed talent that wanted to play
honestly, i still don't buy the "immediate talent" argument. what the hell did TT really add that year? was he really anything more than a name to show the fans? not really. and the cavs are never going to win if the fans are dictating the decisions anyway.

when at such an early stage of the rebuild, talent wins over everything. the cavs should've chosen the more talented player even if they had to wait a year or two to do so. that missed year or two is meaningless in the long-term picture.

said it right after it happened but might as well reiterate it now - i think the cavs are going to sorely regret that decision.

Jonas's agent promised the buyout would be in place before the draft, and dragged on, and dragged on ... and never happened.

Then suddenly the next day Colangelo is announcing it's a done deal.... *shrugs*

Grant got punked by a more experienced GM. He showed his lack of experience there it seems.

Well, it's not like Toronto got JV right away either. So, some of that hemming and hawwing was about saving Jonas the money he would have had to pay out of his own pocket if he was going to come over to the NBA right away.

Anyway, it's understandable that we'd avoid a player that really doesn't want to be here over a player that's from what? 60 miles away? and excited to start his career in Cleveland.

The Cavs focus on attitude and work ethic is exactly what the fans want post-James; alas there are going to be some aggravating tradeoffs made along the way. For instance, I wouldn't be surprised if the main reason we gave to the nod to Dion over Harrison Barnes was because we felt Barnes' ego would be too big for Cleveland. Drummond seemed more than happy to cruise based on his gifts. What was going to motivate him after he'd secured his millions?

I think Grant has a vision of Kyrie, Tristan, and Dion all spending their free time playing in any available gym and working out - not on the phone with their agents or playing video games or out clubbing. Like with OKC, this sets a tone for the whole club, and leads to an environment where players, bond, build chemistry, improve and there's little BS/distractions.

Kyrie, Tristan, and Dion are all athletic enough - and Tyler is very mobile and active even if he lacks hops. So, they all should have room to improve.

The question, is how well will that work if the players don't have the talent to back it up? Sort of a nature/nurture question - that all too often has been won in the NBA by the freaks of nature.

That's the thing about the draft lottery. You pretty much get to keep playing it until you win.

Not if your franchise is competent. Eventually your talent drags you out of the gutter.

That was basically my point. Even if your franchise isn't competent or you whiff on some draft picks, it stands to reckon that eventually your talent will drag you to the playoffs. But you get to keep making lottery picks until they do.

I would say BC is an experienced GM, if you count bad decision after bad decision as experience that is. It's too bad that he didn't draft before us because he would have picked the bust, whether it was Jonas or not. Seems to be that every single choice he makes makes the team slightly better on paper, but fails in reality.

Tell that to Minnesota, Memphis (until recently), the Clippers (practically their entire existance), and Charlotte (one playoff appearance in team history). Bad teams stay bad in the NBA because of poor management, and bad ownership.

Obviously you're less likely to hit the lottery jackpot if you're finishing with the 12th worst record than the 3rd. Most of us around here think of playing the "lottery game" as going for those top-5 picks.

He doesn't have to tell that to Minnesota, Memphis, or the Clips because they already know. They pretty much prove his point. They all played the lotto game and eventually Love, Griffin, Rubio and Gay arrived. Problem was they sucked so bad at picking that it took em the better part of a decade or more to resurrect their teams.

You may not like Grants drafts so far, but he's got a long long long way to go to join the bottom of the barrel ranks of Kahn and Dunleavy's train wreck pasts, and the fact that his first pick was Kyrie already gives him an insulation those teams never had. They had to draft a half dozen dudes or more to finally hit

Kahn still doesnt get enough shit for the Wesley Johnson and Jonny Flynn picks. That team will be ok now that Slick Rick the ruler is there, but they could have been in a position to be OKC loaded had he not struck out with that #4 and #6.

Jonas started out nice in his first qtr of action - 6 pts, 4 boards vs. Pacers (Hibbert)

He played alright on offense, yes. Hibbert absolutely abused him though.

expected, hibbert is the seasoned vet feeding off the hype the toronto crowd is giving jonas and playing inspired. it's a good fight, i don't expect jonas to be a 18 and 11 dude, just there to be the glue guy of the team.
