The Jonas V thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
18/6/1. Best statistical game, but he still had a -9 differential in a blowout. Shows that he can be consistent around the basket in time.

My god, though, he hardly got off the floor in that Durant dunk.

I would take JV's stats with a grain of salt

Thabeet played 22 minutes last night, the same amount of time that Ibaka and Perkins had and Durant and Westbrook failed to hit 30 minutes of action last night

If JV couldn't score at least 10 points on Thabeet it would be sad

What can be consdered a tad more sad is that Thabeet scored 10 points in 22 minutes...that is really telling concerning the defensive side of things

Except JV is a starter and Thabeet came off the bench. If you look at the game flow, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of overlap.

Anyway, like with our own rooks, you take any good game as a positive sign. It's too early in their careers to worry if they're padding stats by bottom feeding.

I've seen parts of 2 Toronto games and saw all of JV's minutes in the OKC game. He was on the court for about 1/2 of Thabeet's minutes.
So far I haven't seen anything to change my opinion of him. I never saw him as a star or dominating C but as a solid NBA starting C. He shows enough solid strength, quickness, athleticism and fluidity for his position to make me believe there is enough there for him to be a solid starting C. Of course he needs a lot more development and patience but that's true of almost every young player. Not everything will be perfect or look too pretty and we see that with Cavs young players too. You do just want to see some signs though.

Toronto doesn't look to him much now in the offense. Many of their players do seem a little too intent to look for their own and jack up shots. He's used a lot to set screens and picks and was ignored or missed when open on pick and rolls. He does at least show an understanding already of what a big man/C should do and how they should play. He did have a nice running hook over Perkins and while being fouled by Perkins in the OKC game. Some have seemed to accuse him of being weak and not physical and that is not the case at all. Wasn't outmuscled or intimidated by Perkins in that game and has shown a willingness to mix it up.
Since FT shooting seems to be a big thing for some when discussing young bigs, JV shows great form and was 6-6 from the line in the OKC game.
His 36/per numbers come out to approx. 15 pts 9 reb's now so that's pretty solid. Not seeing major minutes in every game but will probably be brought along at a slower pace. Hopefully Toronto uses him more in their offense and his teammates look to him a little more as time goes on. Shown he's willing to sacrifice for them and help set them up.

Still only 20 and it's only 5 games in. May not ever be a star but like I said he's shown enough so far in what I've seen to make me think he can be a solid starting C.

16 minutes last night. The game went into 3 OT. What gives? Is he just that much of a defensive liability?

19 mins, 3 points, 2 bounds. Fouled out.

Interesting stats. The first 9 games of Tristan's career--71 points and 41 rebounds. First 9 games of Jonas' career--70 points and 44 rebounds.

I have a feeling we're going to be comparing these two their entire careers

Valunciunas should be a better rebounder considering the team hes on and the people he plays with. I thought his elite rebounding would translate but so far it hasnt

More Jonas getting dunked on..

He's been an excellent offensive rebounder, but his defensive rebounding is a mess. He's poor at boxing out, has no lift/burst and can't get rebounds out of his area. Right now Valanciunas' game is getting offensive rebounds and getting putback points. I think his most impressive/unique skill right now is his 2nd jump on offensive rebounds, it's allowed him to offensive rebound his own misses and score the 2nd time multiple times this season, or if it tips off another players' hand he can quickly recover to go back up for a second ORB try and tip it out. He also made a pretty nice 2nd jump defensive play this game where he went up for the DRB, didn't get it, but got up again quickly enough to deflect it out

That would go with what I saw from the tape I saw of him. He always seemed to be reaching for his rebounds instead of getting the positioning to get them. NBA just isn't going to let him get away with that. I still think he's best off getting the outside shot straight and with his shooting touch, he should be able to learn it.

It's really going to come down to how much weight can he add and not lose his mobility

I see what you did there. I would buy the jersey right away. He might actually be a great fit with us if he keeps showing his worth over the course of the season.
