It makes more sense to film as much as possible when you're on location.

Well, they're not going to film seasons five and six at the same time. The show was just renewed for two more seasons. The showrunners have said in the past that they really only have the time to realistically shoot ten episodes worth of content.

But perhaps what they will begin to do is shoot background and landscape shots on known season 6 locations for color correction and a head start on CGI towards season 6? Not scenes with any heavy acting involved but still some shots to help get ahead of the game?

Maybe, but it doesn't seem like they really have many issues as-is staying on schedule.

The books are significantly better than the show, and I think the show is great. So yes, you should read them.

Eh, this almost always depends on what first shaped your image of the story. If you've watched the show up to this point and haven't read the books, odds are you'll like the show better.

I'd disagree. I watched season 1 first, then read the books. I like the books so much more, even though my images of the Starks, Lannisters, etc were already set in my head.

I still love the show. Books are just better.

I would second this. Saw the first 3 seasons then decided I needed to get through all the books before this season. I love the books but absolutely love the show as well. This show I think is one of the first adaptations where the on-screen holds up to the quality of the book. Yes there are differences but they are both so good. As others have mentioned, I know whats going to happen but I'm still amazed and surprised when I see it in the show.

I for one feel that each supplements the other well. Seeing the show and reading the books really helped me put things together and grasp everything that was going on. In the show sometimes characters come and go and you really don't understand who they were, but in the books you really get to see their importance. The one that always stands out to me is Renly. I would say the first time watching the show I didn't fully grasp who he was or his significance, and then he was dead before I could figure it out. In my mind, he was dead so must not be to important. Reading the books you get the depth and it truly puts things into perspective and clarifies things. I was shocked at how important he really was and the show just rushed past him.

But both are exceptional and work very well together.

Same.

Speaking of the books, I had no idea there was a
Tyrion
chapter from TWoW in the Ice and Fire app. It's really really good and makes me that much more bummed out that the whole book isn't out yet.

I read the first four books before the first season (fifth book wasn't out until that summer) and I still find myself using the looks of the characters on the show as my reference during re-reads, even when they're described differently. Well, the characters that exist, at any rate.

Generally, I just think the books are a deeper, richer world with a greater sense of history and culture than the show can possibly hope to portray. There are so many side characters who are nonetheless important that you'll never see on the screen due to the obvious limitations of a televised adaptation. The world just feels more real in the books than it will ever feel on the screen.

And that's not a knock on the show, although the show obviously has its flaws.

I dunno anything about locations and stuff, but if a lot of stuff is going to happen at, for example, castle black for seasons 5 and 6, it would be more sensible to knock out as much of it as possible when they can.

Given unlimited time, yes, but they are on a very tight schedule every year, which makes it less practical to do what you're suggesting than it sounds.

You also have to take budget into consideration. HBO will not give them the budget for two years right up front. The budget for season six will be negotiated after HBO sees how well season five does. Actors are paid for days on set, and more days on set equals more money from the budget. Given how tight the budget likely is each year (I imagine they squeeze every penny given to them by HBO), they can't really afford to have actors on set longer than they're needed to film season five.

If you think about past seasons, there is very little additional footage leftover (not counting multiple takes of the same stuff, of course), which is why there are almost never many deleted/extended scenes on the blu-ray release. The reason for this is budgetary constraints. They use what they film because they can't really afford to film much more.

They might be better off filming as much as possible now before Bran grows a beard, Arya gets her bewbies, and all of the Maesters die off.

Meh. Unless Arya turns into Alex from Modern Family, I'm not too worried.

As far as Bran goes, he never stands up, so his height isn't really an issue. :chuckles:
