The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread (includes spoilers)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Sure there can be a Night's Watch.

Different mission, different personnel, but it can inherit the Charter and the name and lands that go with it.

King Tree, in agreement with Queen Lemon Cake, can simply give them a new mission.

Like my list of four new things to do while freezing one's balls off.

It's like how knights in the UK don't don armor, cross the channel and kill the French. Institutions can change with the times.

There really might be, I don't know, but I don't think it was why Jon was really sent there. Only to stupid Grey Worm.

He was clearly abandoning his post. And the Wildlings were all there waiting for him to go live beyond The Wall.

That too.

I mean, you're right. If I killed my boss, and was then honorably retired and "banished" to Alaska, with all my frat brothers, I don't think I'd shed any tears. I've been trying to get back there my entire adult life.

I kind of feel bad for the Unsullied and Grey Worm in particular. They really loved Dany and she gave them their human dignity back.

But at least they too are going somewhere they will like, and be loved.

For those who didn't remember, Naath is where Missandei is from.

It is home to a peaceful, good looking people, who make music and art, rather than war. They suffer from slaver raids, like the one that took Missandei, and the Unsullied are going there to protect the people and live out their lives in relative peace and security (apart from the odd raid, which, once the slavers find out who now lives there, will probably end).

Maybe Bran knew that's where Jon was going to end up regardless and it was a compromise Grey Worm was willing to take.

It gave Jon options to go beyond the wall or even go back to winterfell since Sansa runs the north now. Nights watchmen go ranging beyond the wall and no one seems to care when they come back. They never get accused of abandoning the nights watch when they come back from beyond the wall.

But at least they too are going somewhere they will like, and be loved.

Until the butterflies kill them like they kill all those not native to Naath.

Missendei may have forgotten to mention that bit, probably because she thought they were going to die. Whoops.

Grey Worm became a pretty awful human by the end but yea. Am glad the Unsullied got to retire to Naath.

Yeah, but he can't go back to Winterfell. Abandoning The Night's Watch is a really, really big deal. It just can't happen, no matter who you are. I'm not saying he'd seriously get killed for it.

Of course, if there really is still one. Abandoning it beyond The Wall, no one will care.

But I think all long it was a hush, hush thing. It was all done for show in front of Grey Worm. Whether really still was one, or not, he wasn't being sent there.

The Wildlings are all there waiting for him.

I think Bran did know though. And why he was cool with it. Where Sansa and Arya looked like they felt really sad for Jon.

I think that has been omitted from the show hasn't it?

If not, here, I will hand-wave it like D&D:

According to Benioff in the Season 8 commentary:

"The butterflies aren't an issue because the Sand Snakes'™ Bad Pussies swallowed them all up and killed them. That is what they were doing while Oberyn was in Kings Landing. They were practicing the Braavosi art of kegels, called the "Wings of the Butterfly." But being illiterate trash, they took the meaning literally and wiped out the native species of Lepidoptera on Naath. It is also why Bronn became enchanted with them and why the silk trade on Naath collapsed bringing extreme economic hardship. Of course Grey Worm knew nothing of this, and he would have led his men into ruin as he hadn't thought of doing any sort of reconnaissance of the place they were going to land. Because he forgot how to be a soldier and stuff. It happens. Also, I wipe my ass standing up. Like a weirdo."

Ta-da!

Yeah, almost all of them got as happy of conclusions as possible. Even Cersei got a pretty good one.

Jaime got his wish, dying in the arms of a woman he loves.

Jorah didn't get shit. His one wish was saving Dany, proved to be notta.

I thought Brienne's ending was depressing. She was all alone, and left morning Jaime. Sure, she was a knight but it felt hallow.

Being left alone, when I think her finding meaning and love with another person would have meant the world to her. Especially someone that's always been mocked, ridiculed, and made to feel less than others. Is left with no one.

I think abandoning the nights watch was a big deal but now it questionable if there is anyone there let alone leadership or any rules left in place. Jon left the nights watch once and Sam basically left.

If the north is it's own independent kingdom now and the wall is in their territory. Its upon the north to enforce those rules so if Sansa doesn't care, I'm not sure who would.

I bet Sansa could effectively kill the nights watch by saying she wouldn't allow new recruits from the 6 kingdoms and the north will defend the wall now.

She was wearing King's Guard armor wasn't she? I think. Or was it Gold Cloak?

That is the pinnacle of a knight's career. So perhaps that is enough to help her forget her loss.

Both of them. She loved Renly too, even if that was unreciprocated.

But yeah, it sucks for her.

Jon left because he served his watch. He died, so technically he could leave. He tried to leave to go fight with Robb, but would have been executed for abandoning his watch.

Sam was ordered to the Citadel by The Lord Commander (Jon) to become a Maestor and find ways to defeat the WW.

But The North doesn't control The Night's Watch, at all...

I know the nights watch was seen as an independent thing that didn't answer to the 7 kingdoms. If the north leaves the 7 kingdoms, you would think they have rule over their northern border. Especially with no threat from the white walkers and wildlings.

The North was its own independent kingdom for most of the Night's Watch's existence. It was only 300 years before the story begins that the North knelt to the dragon kings. Prior to that, the Kings of Winter ruled the North and the Wall was still presumably soldiered by men from all of Westeros.

The whole point of the Watch is that they serve the entire realm of Westeros and do not bow to any one kingdom or king.

Also, Sansa claiming that the Wall belongs to the North would mean she tried to take back all the lands in the North that are owned by the Watch, which wouldn't sit right with most Northern houses.

But Brienne was one of the more compassionate characters on the show. And her losing her virginity was like a very big deal for her.

She was always so guarded, and always accepted someone of her ugliness could never experience love.

And then she finally opens herself up to that possibility and it was ripped away from her, and left basically alone. Felt really sad.

Her writing Jaime's accomplishments was sad. If we were supposed to feel happy about her conclusion, I sure didn't feel it.
