To me against elite teams, Snow and D. Jones become barely serviceable PG's let alone ones that can be ok on a title contending team.

With Snow he plays solid D on bigger PG's but no longer has the foot speed to keep up with the faster ones. On offense don't get me started: his FG% is decent but any player needs to be putting up more shots when getting the ball from guys who demand double teams. He also has no speed on his dribble which kills fast break oppurtunities and no longer has the explosion to finisht contested layup with any consistencies.

With D. Jones as a plus he can shoot big time and actually has decent +/- numbers but his shot selection is simply putrid at times. And like Snow's offesne, his defense is atrocious.

Now I don't think we need an All-star Jason Kidd type PG but we need one that can play D AND hit jumpers/penetrate. Do we trade for a guy like Claxton or try again to get Earl Watson or simply draft a PG.

This needs to be addressed because against both SA and the Pacers this was the position that stood out to me as just a big hole

What stood out to me was LeBron/Drew/Z's inability to play anything that resembled defense. Man to Man/Team defense and rotations

Last year

This year

Common denominator

I believe the San Antonio game was one that our point guards got soundly outplayed which put us on the back foot. Last night the finger can not soley be placed at them. Yes Snow did not take it to them offensively, and yes Damon was outplayed by Sarunas. But you can say that about each player on our roster. Jackson and Artest outplayed James and Hughes, but we are not concerned there.

Point guard isn't our strongest spot, but we have proven that they can be efficient. Francis and Arenas were soundly outplayed by our combo.

PG is the Cavs biggest need as they move forward. Snow and Jones are servicable for now and can get the job done decently most nights. In order to be a championship team though a better quality PG will need to be acquired.

The easiest way might be to get in position to draft a young PG. I don't see any quality PG's who will be available in a trade and who would be a good fit with the Cavs. I really don't think Claxton or Watson types would provide any real upgrade.

Cavs need a quicker PG with pretty good defensive skills and who can knock down perimeter jumpers fairly consistently. Those aren't really easy to find either. Snow is on the downside of his career and better suited to be a backup. Jones is a combo G with below average defensive ability.

I'd stay with what we have now and make a strong effort to get into position to draft a PG within the next 2 years.

Funny, I remember D Jones as the starting PG for a team that went to the conf championships last year...hmm..

We just arent a deep team, the younger guys need time to develope. It will come...

i wonder sometimes if wilks could bring the fire as such a mid range that snow doesnt.wilks has solid D from what i have seen and i would like to try him out sometime that isnt in bum minutes.D jones go over the top of that damn pick that cause 3 or 4 threes.

He has a point... Wade was mostly the ballhander there. Here, we have Hughes and LeBron who can handle the ball a lot.

I'm keeping an eye on Dee Brown of Illinois this year... some teams will shy away from a short guy who isn't a shooting specialist, but he might be a good value pick when we draft. His speed and defense could be an asset.

Taquan Dean of Louisville could end up a Damon Jones with defense, but I don't know if he will still be there when we draft. He's still a great fit for the Cavs as they seek Eric Snow's protege.

The point being they are ok for now but when we go for a title in hopefully a year or two: doubt Snow and Jones will be good enough.

In fact let's go back to the ECF finals: Billups backing down Jones - scoring, Billups driving by Jones - scoring, Billups backing down Jones - scroing, again and again.

Meanwhile Jones dissappeared on the offensive end and made THE critical TO of the entire series when he couldn't decide what to do and got caught in the air.

PG's bite us again in the loss against Minnesota. Hudson burns both Jones and Snow while Jaric hits the clincher.

pgs scored some important baskets but the 12-59 from the rest of the team hurt us worse. we hit a decent pct and we win by 10, easy.

The Cavaliers just had an off night shooting the ball. 32% (i think) and they still almost won. Sucked to watch, but those games happen.

I think a taller PG is in the cards for next year (it won't be wilks) but I think he will come from outside the US. We will have both mid level exceptions next year to get done what we need done. Til then what we have is what we have. I would not be surprised to see a trade for a point if we are struggling come January (coming from Boston perhaps), but I don't see any evidence we will be struggling at that time. Our point guard is not an offensive first position but instead a defensive and distribution position. If we are going to fault the pg 's in the indy game it can only be that we were not getting the ball to the big men enough. Our shooting percentage was fine inside.

I personally believe we have bigger shoes to fill at center behind Z, although Hamilton has shown me more than I expected.

Wilks by the way is nowhere near ready. He is makes a lot of mistakes and hogs the ball in late minutes. I give him kudos for defense on occasion, but we have to realize that short guys have to be truly special to be useful on defense. Wilks is no Iverson. When he takes his job seriously (even in the garbage time) then we can consider if a vertically challenged point guard is worth a spot.

we did not sign jones because he is the answer at point guard. we signed him because he was the best point guard available. he is a flawed point guard. he cannot shoot unless he is wide open and he struggles bringing the ball up court when he is being hounded by a defensive minded team. but he did fine last year when he played with o'neil and wade, so he should be able to do the job for us with hughes and ilgauskas and Lebron. we have more talent than the heat did.

dee brown of illinois is not a point guard. not yet at least. he was a shooting guard last year. illinois' point guard was that williams guy who was drafted by utah. he covered the point for the passed two seasons, which is why brown was not projected to go very high even before he broke his leg.

a tall point guard would be the ticket for us but i don't know who that would be. they don't grow on trees and the draft is going to be weak and we are going to be choosing late in the first round, because that is where teams with 57 wins end up.

I also like this pick, the guy is super quick and a very good DEFENDER.
