The Quarterback prospect thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
An NFL scout told NJ.com that Texas A&M WR Mike Evans "made" QB Johnny Manziel.

"In my opinion, (Evans) made Johnny Manziel, not the other way around," the unnamed scout said. "A lot of times, Manziel just ran around and threw it up for grabs, and (Evans) came down with it." Though Evans undoubtedly was a gift for Manziel, this opinion is a gross oversimplification. One could just as easily flip the argument and assert that a large chunk of Evans' stats came from throws "up for grabs" that no QB in the nation outside of Manziel ever would have attempted -- or completed.

Weeden-Blackmon anyone?

I'm not a huge Manzel fan but this seems pretty silly.

If you dump Evans' stats from Manziel's two years in college you're left with:

46 passing TD's, 5,321 yards.

For essentially removing all stats to his best target, that's not exactly pedestrian.

While I certainly prescribe to the notion Evans bailed him out on several occasions most of Evans' highlights consist of well thrown balls. In many cases absolutely perfect ones.

It's presumably the ESPN culture where 10-15 catches out of 150+ become the dominant theme for a player.

The Manziel pre-draft stuff feels a lot like Tebow.

I'm not comparing how they play, just the general vibe around them before the draft.

Some love him. Some hate him.

General feeling that he will either be amazing or a complete train wreck.

Tons of media coverage.

Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Anyone see Carr play all season that could give us a fair and balanced perspective. He was hurt vs. USC, but I still have my concerns he will be another QB who used a gimmick offense and a strong arm to raise his stock into a first rounder. It is weird hearing some experts say he belongs in the top 10, while others say he would not be taken in the first 3 rounds.

His arm is so good that he's never needed good mechanics. His offense is so efficient that he's never really faced much pressure.

Two things that generally don't lead to much NFL success, but if he has the chance to sit and learn a while he could eventually be pretty decent.

Greg Cosell was on the Ross Tucker podcast recently and discussed the upcoming draft. The podcast was held the day before Manziel's pro day, and Cosell was asked for his thought on him (this is covered from 6:00 to a little after 7:00):

  • When you watch him on tape, when Manziel had to make throws at the intermediate level or deeper level (throws that require a lot of arm strength), he had to put his entire body into making those throws.
  • That is a concern because in the NFL you won't get the same kind of pockets or functional space you get in college.
  • This is a direct quote: "My guess is, they'll structure his pro day tomorrow to try to show that he can drive the football because that is a concern for a lot of people."

Cosell watches as much tape as anyone, so his word goes a long way with me. I think that his personal visit will mean so much more than a scripted pro day since we will dictate the scenario. We can simulate pressure and coverage (I assume), whereas that was nonexistent in his pro day.

Pat Kirwin, who I like, had a mock today that surprised me. He mock trades and did one where the Raiders move up from the 2nd round to the last pick in the 1st to get Derek Carr. That's not the surprising part. They do so with Teddy Bridgewater still on the board. He had Bortles 1, Manziel 4 but a lot of hesitation putting him there, and Carr as the 3rd QB off the board before Teddy.

Over reaction to his Pro Day, IMO.

But I could definitely see Bridgewater slipping if he gets passed Cleveland.

Not that this should come as a shock, but here is a quote from today's Manziel fluffer from Albert Breer:

"He did good," said one NFC area scout who's evaluated him for two years. "He did struggle to the left, and the ball fluttered when he'd try and force it in. Also, we didn't really see him drive it downfield."

All I'm taking away from this QB talk is that the Browns could possibly get Bridewater, Manziel, or Carr at 26. That gets me pretty excited for BPA at 4.

Those three guys are on completely different tiers as far as I'm concerned. Logic saying that one would be happy to land "Bridgewater, Manziel, or Carr" with the same draft pick is nonsensical to me.

I think it is a bit of a pipe dream to get Bridgewater or Manziel at #26 IMO.

Teams that absolutely need QB's:

HOU(1), CLE (4), OAK (5), Minny (8)

Teams that don't have concrete QB situations:

NYJ (18), MIA (19), AZ (20),

Teams that could easily take a young QB to groom:

KC (23), SD (25)

Teams that could punt on their current QB:

TEN (11), STL (13), CIN (24)

That's 11 teams you could reasonably argue would take either one. That's not even considering someone trading up to grab either.

I think Maziel is a top 10 lock after a strong pro-day. The only guy who could slide IMO is Bridgewater, because teams seem to be luke warm on him.

All in all though, I'd be shocked if Bortles, Manziel and Bridgewater don't go in the top 10. There's just way too many teams that need QB's this year.

JAX at #3 absolutely needs a QB..

At the same time, teams like Miami and Cincinnati are not taking first round QBs. Absurd to suggest they would.

"Coach Shanahan initially messed me up with that impromptu edge rusher. Came out of nowhere. Kinda scary. But then, when I realized that it was just a broom, I settled down and really nailed it."
