The Trent Richardson Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The problem is our O-Line is entire comprised of finesse/technical guys. We don't have 1 run blocking lineman and that falls on Tom Heckert. Lauvao isn't pass blocking or run blocking he's just awful and shouldn't be on the field. You need road grading guys that can destroy people and we don't have that.

I'd like to see them draft a G and pickup 1 in free agency because as it stands it's the weakest link on the line. Honestly I would have preferred moving Pinkston to T where he played at Pitt and have him on the right side and take DeCastro at G. Best value and filled a need.

Weeden was a silly pick.

I really did want him with that pick and it made some serious sense with Trent. It is what it is now but damn that could have been sexy.

I was driving and listening on the radio at the time. I wanted Claiborne and a WR (Wright I figured was most likely) in the first round ideally. When we picked Trent and Wright went a few picks before ours, I was all excited because I just knew DeCastro was the pick. It made the most sense. Then they announced Weeden and I was all FFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!! Almost drove on to the median.

Weeden may end up being a really good QB one day, but I swear I could draft better than any GM we've had since the Browns returned.

Browns fans apparently won't be happy until we waste 3 1st rounders on offensive line...

BTW, Decastro has been a total bust so far. Looked lost on the field then got a severe injury.

I don't hate Weeden, but there were many options on the board at the time. I personally wanted Cordy Glenn. When I saw the pre-mature tweets saying it was Weeden, I was slamming on the imaginary brakes while sitting on my couch... I hope Weeden keeps improving.

Just 50 Carries in, Trent Richardson is a Leader in Cleveland

While Greg Little is preening and posing amidst a 14-point deficit and a shower of hashtags, Browns running back Trent Richardson stands mostly stoic and calculated. Certainly, when Richardson crosses the goal line — as he has three times in his very young career 1 — he exudes a level of energy that is matched only by Cleveland fans watching the plays as they unfold. But until that moment when the ball crosses the goal line, Richardson, beneath that orange helmet with dreadlocks flowing, displays a workmanlike attitude previously unseen by his predecessors.

On an otherwise tough day in the trenches with Richardson managing to gain a mere 2.3 yards per carry, when the rookie back out of Alabama was finally able to turn a busted play into a six-yard touchdown, bouncing the play to his immediate left after running right into the backs of the men who were to create a hole just to the left of center Alex Mack, it was those very men whom Richardson tracked down, one by one, on the Browns sidelines following the play.

A seated Mack got a fist bump to the shoulder pads. Then came Shawn Lauvao and Jason Pinkston and Mitchell Schwartz. The final moment of gratitude was reserved for Joe Thomas. A group of men who have underachieved individually and as a unit, being appreciated by the man whom they have largely let down. Three games in, two of them underwhelming by statistical standards coupled with the fact that his team was entertaining their third-consecutive loss, but Trent Richardson is already becoming a leader on a team in dire need of such a role.

“We’ve got to keep fighting,” Richardson said following the loss. “You’ve got to keep trying to motivate the team and I’ve got to keep motivating myself. As far me stepping in the role of being a leader, I have to make sure I’m doing everything correctly at all times. And so yeah, we’re 0-3 but we have another game Thursday, so we’ve got to go right back to the drawing board and try and find a way to win, no matter what it takes.”

This is the same player who missed the bulk of the preseason following a minor knee operation. The first rookie selected in the most recent draft, a player who the Browns traded up to obtain, and one who was arguably the team’s most talented skill player before even stepping foot on to the field. Sitting on a shiny new contract and closets full of accolades acquired during his days as an amateur player, it would be easy for Richardson, a 22-year-old kid at the core, to waltz in to Berea with a sense of entitlement. But Richardson’s senses include everything but.

There's more to the article but it's about Trent asking to address the team at practice and about Little's drops

Getting injured in your first year is unfortunate, but it definitely doesn't make him a bust. Would he have gotten injured here? No way to know, can't assume he would.

And yes, we want first rounders in the trenches. That's where games are won and lost. See our current guards getting pushed back into Richardson in the backfield every run play, the only OL we have playing well are the ones we drafted high. Every game we've had a shot at winning this year was because of our defensive line getting after the other teams QB and forcing mistakes.

You don't win in the NFL drafting first round WR's unless they are just a ridiculous talent. See Matt Millen. A guy like Megatron is the exception to the rule, you draft a guy like that in the first. Braylon Edwards #3 overall? Bad idea. No coincidence Detroit got good after they started building their lines.

There is a difference between investing in the lines and using 3 first rounders on the offensive line.

No team in the NFL would be that stupid, because then you get teams without good skill positions and your line becomes moot anyway. Some of the worst offensive lines in the NFL have gotten teams to the Super Bowl the past few years with the Steelers and the Packers. Bad offensive lines can be overcome. And of course you don't invest in a ton of first round WR'ers. No one is arguing that. The problem is, we have sunk two first rounders, a second rounder, a third, a fifth and sixth rounder into the offensive line. And people want to use MORE first rounders to fix it. That's foolish. There is a reason we don't have a play maker on defense. There is a reason we have WR'ers who can't get open. Because instead of using high picks on playmakers, we are using them on offensive linemen who are no better than most of the NFL.

The problem with this team, consistently, is not the offensive line. We've had one of the best O-lines going on for about 4 years now, despite a weak RT position. The problem is the surrounding talent, which until recently, hasn't been very good. The Lions didn't get good because they invested high in their O-line *BTW, maybe 1 first rounder?*. They got good because they have an elite QB, an Elite WR, and a near elite defensive line. Look at the Texans. Marginal offensive line, elite play makers, and their defense swarms. 49ers, average o-line, great skill positions, elite defense. Hell, even the fucking Cardinals realize how to build a team: Elite play makers at skill positions, marginal at best O-line, elite defense. Steelers, bad o-line, elite skill positions, dominating defense.

Need I go on? The way to build a team in the NFL is not through the offensive line. It's with good WR'ers, good RB's, and a dominating defense.

I agree with the premise, but Detroit got good because they added an elite QB.

I heard nobody else was going to pick him before the third round....

Also didn't like his top end speed....

Reach! REEEEEAAACCCHHHH!!!!

We really need a Fullback. If we get some gnarly, nasty mean bitch at Fullback Trent would be on pace for 1200. Marecic brings absolutely nothing to the table.. can't run block, can't pass block, can't pick up blitzes, can't catch. He's such a waste of a roster spot.

Not to mention Smelley knows Richardson's rushing style, his idiosyncrasies & tendencies, etc, and obviously would have done nothing but help Trent. It made no sense to me why he didn't make this roster over Marecic (other than they didn't want to show Marecic was a wasted pick yet).

So it's settled then. We take a Guard with #1 overall, we trade back up into the first to secure a FB, and trade a future first to get a late 1st/ early 2nd to take another guard.

Super bowl.

With the 1st pick in the 2013 NFL draft the Cleveland Browns select Zach Boren, FB Ohio State.
