The "What are you playing now?" Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
To be fair, their review explains in detail why they gave it such a low score.

I haven't played the game, and based on that review, I probably wouldn't either.

The crux of their argument is that the game is "shallow" and "boring." I take it you disagree?

I think what he was saying that a 5 should only be given out if the game is broken, like the PC version of Arkham Knight.

But for a game like Mad Max that doesn't necessarily reinvent the wheel but plays well and is fun enough, it should at least get a 7.

I mean at the end of the day the only people that shit affects is the devs and publisher if enough people read it and decide not to buy, but even in this case the vast majority of reviews have been positive so that one will probably be ignored.

I don't think it's any more shallow than other similar games. There's a pretty large amount of upgrades and customization for both Max and his car. The combat is relatively simple, but you could lodge that same complaint against games like Arkham Knight and Shadow of Mordor, both of which scored significantly higher.

But as spydy said, I really don't think you should be giving a game a five unless it is either broken or awful. In a perfect world, a five would be average, but review sites have been grading on a curve for years and, as far as the general reader is concerned, a seven is average. Mad Max deserves at least a seven or eight. I'd lean toward eight right now given what I've played. Like I said, it's not a revelation or anything, but it does pretty much everything well and runs perfectly. It's crashed on me once in the seven or eight hours I've played it and I haven't experienced any performance issues or noticeable frame rate dips.

Their review covered quite a few flaws.. I think they'd argue the game was not up to par, on a technical level or any other. In fact, they went over quite a few "technical flaws" in the game's engine.

I don't necessarily agree that a 5/10 should mean a game is broken, but... that really depends on the scale. Is a 5/10 average, or are we talking something like 7/10 meaning "C" (average)...

I see..

I haven't played it yet.. I'm undecided if I will at the moment.

My wife is about to pick up New Vegas again, and I just finished L.A. Noire.

Speaking of which, L.A. Noire really was a great game; but it went off the rails towards the end. Dunno if they ran out of money or what, but the entire last act of that game was .. well, not as good as the rest of the game. The ending was awful.

Anyway.. would you recommend Mad Max or should I just keep it moving?

To me, mainly due to school, 7/10 means average, but I could see how 5/10 really is average. This whole debate is why it's stupid that people put a number on game reviews. The words should speak for themselves.

Also, I totally agree on L.A. noire. I really liked that game but the way they tied up the story was pretty dumb. I'm sad that the game didn't catch on more and the studio closed because I would have definitely played a sequel. They had some interesting ideas that they could have spring boarded from.

It really depends what you're looking for. There's not a whole lot to the story, although the dialogue is well-written (for the ridiculous Mad Max universe, at least). Basically, Max's car gets stolen and scrapped and he meets an engineer who wants to help him build a masterpiece car, which requires Max to do various tasks to either acquire the parts or get people in the wasteland to give them to him. That's basically it. Oh, and Max pissed off a crazed warlord who he will inevitably have to take down at the end of the game.

The gameplay is generally pretty solid. It's not terribly deep, though. If you've played Shadow of Mordor, the hand-to-hand combat is basically the same, albeit a bit less responsive. The camera during fist fights isn't great, but the combat itself is functional and easy to get the hang of once you get the timing down. The car drives pretty well, and will likely drive better as I upgrade it (you can upgrade the tires to get better traction as you advance). I really like how time slows to a crawl when you aim while in the car since otherwise it would be damn near useless. Like fist fights, the car combat isn't really all that deep, but it is generally fun, sometimes difficult, and the awesome explosions make it satisfying. I haven't unlocked the exploding harpoons or the flamethrowers yet, which should add another layer of strategy to car fights. Ammo is really scarce for everything, though, so you can't really abuse any one strategy.

The game looks great. Beautiful vistas, awesome storm effects, and the aforementioned great explosions that Avalanch is known for. As I've mentioned before, it runs really well. The only time I get a brief stutter is when I cross over into a new area while driving fast and the game autosaves. Other than that, I've had zero performance issues aside from the one time it crashed. There are occasional glitches during fist fights (I assume those will be patched out during the next week or so), but it's a well-designed game overall.

As I've said, it seems to me like a solid eight out of ten. It's fun and pretty, but mostly mindless. There is a shitload of stuff to do, too. If you're a completionist, you'll be at it for a while. The game is basically a fun diversion. I wouldn't recommend it over Witcher 3 (current front-runner for GotY) or Phantom Pain, but if you're just looking to play a fun game where you kill people and blow up cars in a gorgeous desert wasteland, it'll do.

I have trouble focusing when it comes to games. I'll often buy them and then lose interest after a couple of hours. I want to keep playing Mad Max. That, to me, is a seal of approval.

I finally did the supply drop trick, awesome fun, used it as a way to draw all the guards away from a prisoner i was rescuing.

Does d-horse need a manure upgrade?

It's not an upgrade, but I literally just found out you could do that. I had no idea you could even make the horse poop before.

Anybody play assassin's creed unity? Thinking about picking it up on the cheap

I just haven't been able to play or even think about games since I beat The Witcher 3, it's like now the rest don't seem worth it. :/

Heard it was actually a good game when the bugs were all fixed.

I think I've just been totally burnt out on Assassin's Creed games. That's the problem with games that have yearly releases. It just becomes harder and harder to stay invested in a franchise that has a new installment every damn year. I think the last Assassin's Creed game I finished was Brotherhood, and I'm pretty sure Unity will be the last one I buy. I'm not even remotely interested in the new game either. Too many other major releases to worry about.

Totally burnt out on Call of Duty too.

^^^ Seconded on Call of Duty... I downloaded the beta for Black Ops 3 and haven't even booted it up yet. Probably won't ever get around to actually playing it, so right now all it's really doing is taking up 13GB on my Xbox One's hard drive. I've heard it's essentially Advanced Warfare 2 that ripped wall running from Titanfall.

Gonna pick up MGSV pretty soon, and definitely Fallout 4 when it comes out, but I'm staying away from Call of Duty. Just not worth it anymore. It gets old quick, and when you factor in all the DLC, it's really not worth paying $100+ for a game you get burned out on in a couple of months. I would actually love it if they went back to WWII, or even made a sequel to World at War, but I don't see it happening ever.

Speaking of DLC, I've heard nothing but great things about Destiny's DLC, and that it has really made it a much better game. Granted, that franchise has a huge following of fanboys, but can anyone here vouch for it? I stopped playing once I reached level 28 and haven't touched it in months. I just got really bored of it and from what I've heard it's nothing now but a grindfest to get exotic gear for PvP.

Agreed. I get pulled in every CoD. I'm gonna try to resist Blops 3. Just don't want to waste any time and money on that franchise anymore.
