Tristan Thompson: Initial Thoughts

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
More on Rich Paul...

Paul, of course, is close to LeBron James. He is also the first "R" in LRMR - James' marketing company. He is only loosely affiliated with it these days, however, since he is now working at Creative Arts Agency and breaking into the player-representation business.

CAA has offices worldwide and is one of Hollywood's top talent agencies. It is also loaded with NBA megastars such as James, Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade.

One of its newest clients is Cavaliers rookie forward Tristan Thompson, which is what brought Paul back to the Cavaliers. Thompson does not have any ties to LRMR, but he is represented completely by CAA.

Despite the falling out between James and the organization last summer, that never really trickled down to Paul. He has always maintained a good relationship with the Cavs, particularly General Manager Chris Grant. "You have business and you have personal side," Paul said. "I never really got into the personal side of that (with James)."

The Cavs had been in contact with James' mother, Gloria, throughout the free-agent process last summer. Even on the morning of "The Decision," the Cavs had still been chatting with Gloria. But by early afternoon, she had stopped taking their calls. That's when it started to become clear what was happening.

As the television program was about to begin, Paul picked up the phone and called Grant to tell him what was happening.

"Nobody told me to do it," Paul said. "I just felt like it was the right thing to do."

Seems like a genuinely good guy.

Back in last July, Rich Paul was quoted as saying something along the lines of 'I cried and pleaded with him to reconsider and stay in Cleveland' and 'I'm so sorry Cleveland, you will always be my home'. He was the one in that posse that I liked.

He gets a bad rap because he's affiliated with Lebron and LRMR. Dudes really cool. You may see him at Miami games and looking out for Lebron when people talk crap about him but he's a true friend. That's what a friend does.

He's from the East Cleveland area and he grew up near my family corner store and he came in today and gave me dap. Dudes cool. His pinky was froze too.

wow, and just reading that whole clip, it's really apparent how much LeBron was trying to not only leave via free agency, but he wanted to blind side us and screw us over in the worst and most disrespectful way...I mean I thought LeBron was a douche before, but it makes me seriously hate him that much more when things like this come out. Thank GOD Tristan has nothing to do with LRMR...and yeah Paul seems like a really good guy, too.

He was the one who, on his own, picked up the phone and called Gilbert to let him know what was going to happen when the show started last July.

TT would be a fan favourite however the no.4 pick raises his expectations.

You're right, he only got us the #1 pick for Jamario Moon and Mo Williams. What a douche.

smh. I am so lost by this comment. What does this have to do with the statement I just said referring to if TT wasn't the best pick, people (not me, I like what Grant's done so far), might blame Grant?

3 possible reasons why the Cavs took Tristan (in no specific order):

1. Gilbert wants to win now so he took a potential impact player (Tristan) instead of waiting for a possibly better prospect (Valancuinas).

2. They see something in Tristan that we don't.

3. They were extremely upset about the Jazz taking Kanter and couldn't think clearly about who to pick next.

I really don't hate the pick but I think we could've taken Valanciunas and wait for him to come. That way, we would be left with Kyrie and have a bad season to get a high pick next year. But TRISTAN COULD PROVE US WRONG.

In 2012-13,assuming no strike, who will be a better contributor to an NBA team?

Answer is Tristan....

...4.) Thompson was the #1 player on our board at the time he was selected.

Come on man, these are NBA teams that prepare for the draft for a long time. Extremely upset about the Jazz picking Kanter? I assumed the Jazz were going to go after Kanter even after all the rumors of how much they liked Knight. The Cavs had to not have been surprised by this. If they were surprised by...the guy projected the most as going #3 actually going #3...there would be a huge problem.

As for Gilbert wanting to win now, there is a possibility. But at the end of the day, no matter how silly and emotional Gilbert is sometimes, his basketball people surely told him that you can't win now no matter what - even if you tried to. And if he doesn't realize that another lottery pick next year would be EXTREMELY helpful, we have no shot with him as an owner. I think, though, that he may have wanted to make progress now, as opposed to trying to win now, meaning that having a player who, at BEST, wouldn't start developing with the team until a year from now could have caused problems. That's the only way I could see that.

Some of us DO see something in Tristian, you know.

Doesn't Knight going 8th say something about how the GM's felt about him? Raptors and Utah passed on him despite having no future PG at all and the Bobcats decided they would rather have Bismack Biyombo instead of him.

You could tell me right now that Tristan Thompson will never play an NBA game and I would still take Kyrie Irving and Thompson > Williams and Knight.

The better choice was taking Irving # 1..the best player/PG in the draft..I was skeptical of trying to do the Williams/Knight thing because he was on a lower level than Irving..had he been right up there it's possible Utah might have selected him,but I've known for a while that the Jazz like their big men and two of their guys may be gone in coming years.
I didn't want to see Grant get cute ,take Williams ,then have to settle on a lesser PG.

I started this thread in hopes that we would have some spirited debate about how we saw Thompson developing and contributing, now that he is here.

Im pretty much over debating how or why he is here.

My thoughts on that havent changed since draft night.

I just want him to be good for us, now
