Tristan Thompson: Initial Thoughts

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
No need to let minor details like that get in the way of the apologists.

His value is only less if there's only ONE team interested in him. If there are multiple teams interested then his value will remain high because they will bid against each other.

Basics of creating value here fellas.

The Cavs claim the main thing they look for in their workouts is the interviews. They must feel that Tristan is coachable and they can develop him. If that's the case, then he has some raw skills and athleticism to work with.

There were some significant question marks with the other bigs in the draft, and one thing you won't have to question about Thompson is whether he'll have the athleticism to finish, defend, and grab boards. Just about everything else, however? Our staff will have to work on with him.

I'm thinking we got screwed when Kanter went to Utah. If he'd fallen to us, then if we still really wanted Thompson, that's when we could have traded down with Washington, picked up that extra pick in the first round, and still taken Thompson. I'm thinking we weren't counting on JV falling, but that we'd be able to take Thompson later. Instead we had to take him at 4 which has everyone all up in arms because by most mock drafts he went way too early.

Please, JJ's value is no more "lessened" than if Kanter had been the pick and also played some PF. JJ's market is what it is. If the Cavs don't feel they get the offer they want, JJ won't be traded. He will play some 4 and 5. Thompson isn't going 40 minutes a night at the start.

Re: Tristan Vs. Biyombo???

JJ Hickson is now expandable. Will bring back a first round pick next year. WATCH! He'll put up beast numbers and at the trade dead line... barra bing barra bong.

Jonas was a gamble...we might not have even seen had him for 2 years, and even then he could've been a huge bust...and he could've hurt himself with his interview...did you see him trying to talk after getting drafted? he couldn't speak or understand english AT ALL...it's hard to have a player on your team you can't even communicate with.

Tristan's a good pick...oozing with raw talent and athleticism, and has the character to work and develop into something more...i see him as a Josh Smith type - a shot blocking and rebounding specialist who will eventually add some offensive skills a couple of years down the road.

Ok for anyone Who Is upset about this... Kanter was gone! and It takes two teams to tango. This guy was the best choice being as JJ can net Us a pick next year. With Davis and Irving lobbing to TT should be fun to watch. I do not know alot about this guy but one thing I do know he was a safer and better Asset than Jonas or any other bigs. I think the Raptors were going to take him If we did not. Kanter going third just messed the night up plain and simple. good pick for the spot the Cavs were in

Just like most of you I was mad when we didn't get Jonas V but lets not act like JJ Hickson is Amare Stoudemire. Hickson has a very low bball IQ, crappy defense and stones for hands. Not to mention when he's on the court he doesn't provide positive minutes. Thompson is a big time defender, has hands, very athletic, long(pause), and I guarantee he has a better bball IQ than JJ. JJ is drawing a lot of interest from other teams. He might actually net us a nice package of players and picks. I just think it's funny that everybody watched highlights of Jonas V dunking on everybody and we all loved him but we watch highlights of Tristan Thompson and see him dunk and block shots all over the place and we hate the guy. Give him a chance. Dude could turn into an all star and better than any of you(and I) expected. Also it's easier to teach offense than it is to teach defense and heart. Remember that when comparing Thompson to Hickson.

Has everyone forgotten that JJ spend a good part of the season playing center and put up his best numbers there? We don't have to move him any time soon, but rather wait for a good deal.

Nailed it right there. I like the pick because it shows the Cavs are going to build a team the right way. That being defense.

This biggest bust tonight was RCF. It was useless tonight.

Just caught up & really am ashamed of this board right now. I expect better from most of these guys. Ridiculously over-dramatic.

I'm more disappointed in Utah taking Kanter then the Cavaliers taking Thompson. A lot of us were setting ourselves up for disappointment if Utah didn't take Knight. It was just a shallow draft. At the end of the day I would have preferred Thompson over Veasley, Biyombo, Knight, Kemba, and Jimmer. When I put it into context I think Grant just went best player available and I can't argue against that.

At the very least the Cavs did get their PG of the future and that's about as positive as I can be right now.

I agree with this. It's what we set out to do, and we did it.

Maybe Grant sees something in a JJ/Varejao/Thompson trio with each guy playing about 30 minutes a night. JJ brings the explosive offense, Varejao the defense and Thompson the defense and rebounding. One thing is for sure, having depth in the front court is never a bad thing.

He brings something explosive but it's not his offense. His explosively bad IQ and defense is more like it.
