Tristan Thompson

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Removing Waiters? Waiters hasn't started since like week 2.

Removing waiters from the starting line up and inserting Deng has opened up the center of the defense. They've managed to spread the floor and open up lanes for cuts even with Thompson on the floor.

Out of curiosity, do you watch Cavs games?

Waiters has been the 6th man. He is 2nd in scoring coming off the bench behind Nick Young in the entire league.

Deng wouldn't of replaced Waiters anyways seeing how Waiters is a guard and Deng is a Small Forward.

I remember A lot of us and media types saying that Thompson Should be a double double guy and they would be happy. Guess what he Is and people still find ways to hate on him. He has shown the most progress I seen a big man show In a while. This kid Is one of those players you forget yet are thankful you have him.

Aldridge is a great offensive player, so its no surprise that Tristan struggled with him.. But this is an aspect of TT's game that has improved every season. He has the length, motor and athleticism to defend top players, but it will take more time to excel at it.

There are posters here that just ride Tristan as if he were Kurt Rambis. He is a better player with a better trajectory. IMO he has overachieved compared to his draft position and predraft expectations already. Today I would not trade him for Derek Williams or Enis Kanter period. When he reaches his ceiling, we can decide to keep him or move him, but moving him now is selling low...

I agree with the selling low part. He has been shooting righty for less than a year. He is going to get better. You don't want to overstate what a game against a poor defender means, but beating up on a guy like Faried is exactly what we should see. Also, I think most of us could agree that the got the ball to TT early in the possession before his man was set, and that was really effective.

Is it just me, or are the mismatches being more effectively attacked since Dengs arrival?

You're totally right here, ever since Mike Brown stopped playing backup center and concentrated on coaching the team, they've been much better.

Alot of it is Deng, but don't overlook the respect teams are showing miles when his three ball is falling. This is the best spacing in the starting unit we've had all year. Hard to drop a wing into the paint when you have to defend miles out past the arc.

Ever since Deng came, the Cavs don't have as many mismatches to be taken advantage of, so that was moot now that they're forced to focus on the ones we really have.

Meanwhile, there are 7-10 starting power forwards who have center size. Pau, Jason Thompson, Aldridge were included in that list. We already faced guys like Duncan and will face another in Dirk VERY soon.

I'm not going to say if Tristan is worth more than a 3rd big at this point, because we need 1-2 more seasons to see if he gets anymore bag of tricks (like the desire to take a jumpshot). But he has gotten stronger from the looks of it (the Manimal looked outmatched despite last season) and ends up playing within himself to get those 12-10 a game. He outplayed J.J. (positioning, rebounds, movement) He was communicating. And most importantly, he's not stupid.

The board here has a rapid-fire like opinion of the guy, but realistically, is this it? If it is, then he'd be a sixth man type forward with a great chance to become our Andy or Andy 2.0. If not, the sky is the limit.

What happened to his shot-blocking? It's completely 100% gone.

He's playing PF almost exclusively now. His rookie year, when he had more blocks, he played a lot of center and spent more time in the paint. Tougher to block guys like Aldridge, Love, Bosh, with so many PFs now stretching the floor. Less time in the paint equals less blocks imo.

He also wasn't exactly an Ibaka to begin with.

And he's steadily improving even after switching shooting hands less than 6 months ago. He's nowhere near tapped out his potential yet.

How many years did it take for Andy to develop a reliable jumper? Or do more than just flop on the court? You couldn't have predicted how much he would improve by watching his 3rd year in the league.

Andy always had a natural feel for the game, it's not fair to compare Tristan to him.

A player's growth is not limitless. Tristan has a ceiling, and in my opinion he is close to reaching it offensively. He just lacks fluidity on that end. I am much more interested in watching how he grows as a defender.

Andy in his first few years was far uglier of a player than TT. He could barely make a layup and any form of a jumper. Now look at him. He's virtually automatic at 18 feet. And he basically added that shot within the past year.

Some of you people have no patience... Calling for TT to the bench, so we can get a jump-shooting PF to stretch the floor. I truly believe Tristan can be that guy next season with another off-season so he can keep working with that right-handed jumper. He has the ability to hit it, he has shown it many times. The things lacking though are confidence and consistency.

I also believe when Tristan starts making that 15 foot jumper with consistency next year, it will really open up his game and take it to the next level with averages around 15 and 10. I think people forget Tristan is also a young player, he's only 22. I even forgot how young he is sometimes, kid gives it his all and is a pretty good leader/teammate for being 22 years old. People have to be patient with our young guys. Especially with Tristan and Zeller, bigs take the longest to develop. Not saying TT will be an automatic jump shooter next year, but if he can be consistent with his jumper and shoot it with confidence when open, then he will be a perfect fit here with his hustle and rebounding to go with it.
