Tristan Thompson

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This is wrong for numerous reasons that have been detailed before.

We may not be financially able to keep Tristan and Mozgov at near-max contracts.

Please do not assert something like this as factual when many others on this board not only disagree but have good reason to.
Exactly. Some people are hilarious.
The same people who say Greens contract has a bearing on TTs contract, also say Mozgovs contract signing has no affect based on TTs.
If Cavs hold their ground on TT issue, that sends s strong message to Mozgov and others. Who knows Moz might just sign 15 million per year the very first possible day. But cavs cave in to TTs demands, that establishes a wrong precedent.
Then you have to pay Max to Moz and more money to very signing there after.

Most NBA teams are fairly patient because they know you need superstars to win. That's why teams tank, and that's why a bunch of teams kept open cap space for 2010.

The idea that all of those under the cap teams are going to want to eat up all their space next year is ludicrous, because they know that major acquisitions will affect their cap space down the road. Giving a max contract to TT in 2016 may out you out of the running for a true blue chip player in 2017.

The other angle next summer that is consistently ignored is the pending renegotiation/lockout in 2017. Nobody knows what the result of that is going to be, and I'm really skeptical that teams are going to commit max money to role players, which may have unanticipated negative effects under the new CBA.

Tl:dr I think teams are more likely to keep their powder dry for 2017 than to hand out max deals to TT-equivalents in 2016.

Negotiating is all about leverage. What pain points can you cause with your absence; what ills can your presence can cure?

And right now, the leverage TT is using is that the Cavs have a Championship level team and they drop off without his presence. How much is under debate to be sure, but THAT is the pain point he is attempting to exploit. Everyone else on the team took less to play for that Championship. Whatever you think of JR, he is making 5M this year and is a HUGE part of the team. Iman is our starting G and took less than half what Tris is demanding. His defensive splits for the Cavs were significantly better than Tris' (101.2DRTG with, 108.0 without) and walked away from much bigger offers to play for a Championship.

But Tris is completely using the opposite tact. He and his representatives believe he holds significant leverage BECAUSE we are competing for a Championship. So the leverage he is representing is that he is willing to sit out the season to lower the Cavs chances at winning a championship.

The players will tell you its business and they understand. But deep down it has to PISS OFF the guys that took less to be here to compete for the pinnacle of their profession while the other guy is threatening that for their own selfish personal benefit. Its not THAT he is negotiating for more money. Its HOW he is negotiating.

And the fans should be even more pissed. Every other league in every other sport in the world would just cut bait with a guy like this. And frankly, I'm starting think its a good idea here too.

If the Cavs can get a guy for a fraction of the cost that gives us moderately comparable production using the TPE, they should absolutely pursue it. And every name should be leaked to really make TT and Paul sweat. The Cavs will be a contender either way, but TT faces the very real possibility of being team-less and money-less if he keeps the wheels on this farce buss turning.

There is no chance 76ers will use a max on Tristan Thompson. We are they trying to fool. Hinkie won't spend the max on a player like TT.

I think Lowe, in that podcast, just echoed what most sensible people think.

I think the missing angle though, is Rich Paul's desire to build and grow a long lasting, successful agency business.

Tell Rich Paul to find a sign and trade partner. If he can't find one, tell Tristan to keep his ass home and use the TPE for a defensive big in January. Good luck next year in free agency after taking the year off.

I think we could add a guy like Brandon Bass / Channing Frye and with the other bigs on the roster we would have a REALLY good front line. But I don't think, even with TT out of the picture for now, our front line is nearly as big a problem as the backcourt. With Kyrie and Iman being as injury prone as they are, with no real backup at the 3, I would MUCH rather add another 2/3 than use those resources to pay/replace TT.

The other pertinent tidbit I took from the Lowe podcast was that while Rich Paul is his agent, the other half of his agent team was Jim Jackson's agent 20 years ago when he sat out almost the entire season his rookie season (and negotiated getting full back pay). I just don't like where this is heading and if there are options out there I would like to avail ourselves of them.

I think this pretty much nails the situation and gets to the crux of everybody's frustration with this holdout. It's more blackmail than an assessment of market value.

It's incredible that when we discuss TTs holdout we are so focused on what the cap looks like going forward and whether the cavs have any ability to maneuver for another valuable replacement player.... As opposed to which part of TTs skill set indicates he's a max player. The obvious answer is that NONE of TTs game indicates he's a max player. He's a complimentary piece and in a true open market would be paid like one. This town is starved of a title and on the cusp of one... That alone is TTs leverage. People have a right to be pissed.

Having your guy sit out an entire year, and then getting a smaller contract the following year, probably isn't a good way to do that.

Freakin' Mark Termini.

I honestly forgot about the TPE. Im cool with bailing on Thompson. F that guy. Hes more distraction than hes worth.

This is coming from one of his biggest fans.

If I didn't have hundreds of my professional colleagues as friends on my social media pages, I would have written countless angry posts to TT for holding out and missing the first preseason game. What a damn twat.
