Tristan Thompson

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I haven't followed Kaun's career. He doesn't seem like a guy with much lateral quickness who can play PF and defend at an above average level. Thoughts?
Well I don't think he's going to play PF...he only did last night because we literally have no PF right now aside from Andy.

I was just referring to his defensive prowess as a "big", which is reportedly quite high.

I'm in the group that doesn't think the Cavs have offered TT 80 million. I think they have offered lower than that knowing he has nowhere to go. I think he would have taken 80 million by now. We only have sources telling us 80 million and those sources probably get their info from the same place broussard does...

Didn't the same thing happen with Andy when he held out? Then he ended up taking a lower offer from another team than what was "reportedly" offered by the cavs. He ended up taking a deal worth 5.6 a year year.

TT lost all leverage when he didn't take the QO. He showed he only wants to play for the Cavs.

Portland already has 8 centers/power forwards (not to mention Ed Davis who is a poor mans TT.) The only way philly takes a chance on him is if its a sign and trade opportunity which is super unlikely.

Both Andy and Sasha held out and got the shaft and their games suffered because of it. Go ahead and let TT sit the whole regular season if he wants. I can guarantee he will not want to miss out on a chance of winning a ring.

I wouldn't say I've lost respect for him, but I see a guy who appears to be overplaying his hand at this point.
For a guy with zero offensive game, and limited ability to protect the rim, to get 16 mil a year for 5 years it way above market value, even with the cap rising.

The difference between what he wants and what he can get isn't worth making a moral stand.

Time to sign TT. Your agent did an excellent job.

If you don't, the risk isn't worth the reward.
Exactly and the reason i lost respect is because he is letting his agent act like we made a mediocre offer while the offer is more than what he is worth. TT is showing his greediness and it looks like he doesn't care about winning, i put myself in his shoes and no way in hell any other player will do what he is doing right now.

.

I'm not quite sure I follow the logic of that. It is still possible for TT to sign a one year deal to play for the Cavs just this season. Maybe they'll end up settling for 1 year/$10 million rather than just the QO.

He showed he only wants to play for the Cavs.
I disagree, if he wanted to play for the Cavs he would have accepted one of the 4 offers that was put in front of him in the last 15 months(4yrs/$48 million, 4yrs/$52 million, 5yrs/$80 million or 1yr/$7 million).

TT has showed he just wants to get paid the max, even though he isn't worth it...

he can't sign that unless we offer it and why would we offer a 1 year deal now? He can't sign a 1 year deal with any other team.

Agreed.

Minimum deal Tristan can sign for is a 2 year deal, possibly 3 with the last year being an option year.

There is no longer a path for Thompson to become a free agent next offseason.

Because we want him to play.

Suppose RP comes to us in a couple of weeks and says: "Fine. We can't come to an agreement on a long term deal but let's not ruin this season. TT will sign a one, year, $10M deal to get on the court right now."

Now maybe the Cavs would say "sorry, but we have the leverage now and so no," but the truth is they'd probably end up taking that. We'd get him for this year, and with a much smaller tax.

If the Cavs rejected that, the PR battle would reverse (after all, we were willing to spend much more than that in the first year of a long-term deal anyway), and the team, especially LBJ, might get grumpy if TT isn't playing for that reduced number.

I get the the point of principle, but he's still offering to play for a lot less than the $14m we were prepared to pay him for 2015 anyway.

Is TT not permitted to sign a one year deal with the Cavs, or only with other teams?

The Cavs aren't going to make TT an unrestricted free agent next year. There is no reason for them to do that. If RP came with that offer, the cavs would use that to get real negotiations started on a longer deal.

Only with the Cavaliers, and that's only if they offer it to him.

But with any other team, the minimum is 2-years excluding options. So no team other than the Cavs can offer him a 1-year deal.

The fastest plausible path to free agency at this point is if Rich Paul can get Portland to offer Tristan a $27M 2-year contract.

That would essentially shield him from loss ($13.5M starting salary), while getting Tristan into free agency ASAP (2 seasons). Cavaliers would very likely match such an offer, and Paul would've gotten his 3-year deal. If Cavs don't match, Portland gets a solid trade piece to use down the road.

Can't see Portland doing that unless there is some bad blood between the Cavs and Blazers, because there's no way the Cavs don't match that.

I suppose I could still see a one year deal as a compromise by the Cavs. After all, had he taken the QO, he would have been a UFA next summer. So maybe the Cavs would just view it as paying a somewhat larger QO. Not ideal, but it would probably be preferable to a holdout, and it would end the drama/uncertainty.
