USA vs Spain (Gold Medal Game)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: USA vs Spain (Gold Metal Game)

Man, I was bricking it that whole game. Spain was amazing- they made us earn it. Kobe and Wade saved us in this one: Wade in the 1st half and Kobe in the 2nd.

This feels so good after all the crap we've taken from the rest of the world about team USA over the past 6 years.

Re: USA vs Spain (Gold Metal Game)

I just wrote a long, poetic post about this game. It was worthy of the RCF Blog, honestly. Unfortunately, when I when to post it, I must have it the wrong button because I my screen refreshed and I lost everything.

Bulletpoint Summary:

Hats off to Spain;
Fouls (some questionable) kept them closer than they should have;
Nonetheless, Spain showed heart, skill, guile, and a little bit of nastiness;

Times have changed;
Despite dominating the whole tournament, it took everything USA had to win this today;
USA busted their asses tonight and shot a nice percentage;

USA really giddy celebration;
High-fiving random people in crowd; elated.
Kobe refers to himself as "Mamba" in interview with Sager;

It's a cool thing to be proud of your national basketball team again.

Re: USA vs Spain (Gold Metal Game)

And as we wait for the gold medal ceremony, we get treated to yet another Michael Phelps montage. Starting to get a little old...already.

That close win over the Yugoslav (sorry, can't remember which state) still gives me goose bumbs. But I can't get over how lame Rowdy Gaines is in his excitement. He just parrots the play-by-play.

Re: USA vs Spain (Gold Metal Game)

No posts from me during the game because I was keeping my girlfriend awake by throwing her all my witicisms. She gave me eleven rep points. Anyways, she just went to bed, so I'm going to get my blog on.

Coach K is the real story of this team for me. Everyone always said he is a great college coach, but multimillionaires would eat him alive in the pros. I don't think I have seen many superior coaching jobs than what he has done in the past four years. Every single young Olympic player under him has improved dramatically in the past four years on one level or another, including our pride and joy. The refs gave us no brakes in this championship, but our defense was simply astounding. Coach K deserves a ton of credit for that. I always said that I support Mike Brown to the hilt, and the only coach that he could possibly be fired for would be if Coach K decided to give the pros a chance. I stand by that opinion, and I grew up hating Duke with a white-hot passion.

I don't like Kobe as a person, but that bastard is clutch. Redemption for the NBA Finals is spelled K-O-B-E. Wes Mantooth out.

Wade is back. When the US squad was in trouble at the beginning of the game, he looked like 2006 Wade. We shouldn't write off that Miami squad this upcoming year.

Remember that the first guy that LeBron hugged after the final whistle blew was Micheal Redd. Just don't forget that.

Rudy Fernandez and Marc Gasol are both going to be factors next season. Fernandez looks like a young Ginobili, and Gasol looks like a Bynum clone. I'm vehemently pissed Paxson put us in a position to acquire neither because of trading away picks for magic beans over the years. That Jaminez kid might also show up in the pros someday... he frustrated the heck out of our team defensively and he had a nice outside shot. Rubio is the real deal, despite many, many young dumbass mistakes. He put Calderon on the bench and he doesn't shave yet.

LeBron: damn, we are going to be in for one amazing year. Despite being surrounded by the best players in the world on his team, Spain still defended him like Boston did in our playoff series. If he had the ball, it was 1 on 4 at all times. He blew some layups which is not like him, but LBJ is clearly the heart and soul of the best team in the world. Right now I'm watching LBJ accept his medal on the podium, and his leadership is all they talk about. I can't wait to see him celebrate like this in a Cavs uni.

Re: USA vs Spain (Gold Metal Game)

Holy Moley, what a game. Yeah, its 5:25am while I'm typing this, but I'm a huge basketball fan, and I'm not going to let a little thing like sleep get in my way.

Some of the stuff from the game will be imprinted on my eyeballs for quite some time. First off, Spain played a great game and need to be commended for giving the favorites a real run. Rudy Fernandez had a sick one handed dunk in the second half, and Juan Carlos Navarro played out of his mind to keep his country in it.

USA had me worried with Lebron James snagging 4 fouls and Dwight Howard tossing bricks at the free throw line; but Dwayne Wade's 27 points and the play of Kobe Bryant just couldn't be denied. I have to say even though I don't like Bryant he showed why he's the NBA MVP, his performance under pressure was key here and helped seal the victory (that four point play helped too).

This was just great basketball, no denying it. The emotion on the bench with every possession and score was draining for a viewer, but that catharsis came with the expiring clock and the USA victory. A good way for Michael Redd to celebrate a birthday,a quality send-off from Lebron shouting out to Ohio, a quick post here, and I'm ready to call it a night after all the excitement, but I doubt my nerves will let me.

"Not about the name on the back of the jersey, but about the three letters on front."

Re: USA vs Spain (Gold Metal Game)

did anyone see lebron when the national anthem was playing? he was crying. that gave me goosebumps

Re: USA vs Spain (Gold Metal Game)

It was really nice to see how seriously the guys took the game, and how much pride they took in winning. I think that '04 failure was really important for putting things in perspective here in the US.

That said...I think Larry Brown did an absolutely awful job in his attempt to win gold. I felt that by ignoring the young guys he really did that team a dis-service. Good thing is, the same guys he ignored are now THE top guys in the league and Coach K couldn't have used them any better.

Coach K had a hell of a lot to work with but he used his tools very well. He had this team playing with a lot of energy and playing defense at a college level intensity. It was truly fun to watch and I'm just happy that the players seemed to take as much pride in it as the fans.

Re: USA vs Spain (Gold Metal Game)

First time I've been proud of USA basketball in a long time...not just for the gold, but the way they handled themselves, how they dealt with adversity after being able to coast to this point...the key was the selfless attitude that everyone on the team genuinely seemed to have. One lasting image is the shot of Kobe and Lebron celebrating Phelps's 8th gold. Cool.

It's a rip-off that coaches don't get a gold medal. Hope Colangelo puts something together for the entire staff, especially Coach K.

Just awesome to have the gold again. All those people int he main forum thread who bitched about Lebron playing just don't understand. We will be a better team next season BECAUSE of this win. Lebron just played with some of the best talent and best coaching in the world. He got an up close and personal scouting report of the future of the NBA. He learned from guys like Kobe who he should be studying as much as possible.

It was great to see all the stars like that acting like little kids when they won. That's the best thing about it. Not sure who mentioned it on TV but they said only reason USA lost the past 8 years is that we didn't want it as bad as other countries did. This year was different.

Kobe played horrible the first half to me, But everyone saying he did a good job, Only at the end to make up for what he did in the first half, We could have done A LOT better on D, Especially with that one guard getting in the lane,

But hell, We still won

Marc Gasol was crying too ... he found out McDonald's was removing the double cheeseburger of the dollar menu :chuckles:
