It's discouraging when all we here all off season is "This guys ready, he's older, he's mature because he was a gas can in minor league baseball."
Yet the 22 year olds looked comfortable and Weeden looked the worst.
This shouldn't be surprising, Colt has started several NFL games. Unfortunately being comfortable and having experience won't magically increase his ability to throw the ball.
Weeden is more mature, that just comes with age and life experience. However maturity doesn't necessarily translate into being comfortable on the field. The main reason I liked Weeden was his talent. There's no question there were flaws to his game, but he's a guy who was pretty accurate in college and has the ability to make all the throws. I didn't mind his age too much because, even if he takes 2 years to develop, then he could still likely play at a high level for another 5 or so years. Heck he could play longer in theory, he hasn't been getting hit as long as most NFL QBs and he doesn't really need to worry about a decline in athleticism, it's not like he runs. When's the last time we had a QB here for 5 years?
Did I think Weeden would step on the field and be good from day 1? No, clearly he had kinks in his game that he needed to work out. I just wasn't freaking out because we might only get 5 years from a QB instead of 12.
