Those second rounders are good trade pieces for the future...why take a risk on a marginal to potentially worthless player?? Having loads of second round picks can add up when you're looking for a certain player or extra first rounder.

Jeremy Tyler was the only guy I thought was worth taking in the 2nd round. Aside from that, I was fine with Grant trading the pick.

That is one lens through which to look at the #32 pick. It is a risk to draft a high second rounder, but not that big of a risk. Harper has a one year contract for an undisclosed amount, perhaps the league minimum.

The lens I see this deal through is very different because we know that at least three players drafted after #32 are playing big minutes on average teams, at positions that the Cavaliers could use useful players. Right now, we know Parsons has beaten out Budinger and Williams for minutes at the small forward position. Right now, we know Leuer has beaten out Ilyasoya and Mbah a Moute for a spot in the Bucks rotation as a stretch PF. Some of these players could prove to be even better when they get an opportunity.

So if those second round picks are only going to be worth anything if Dwight Howard leaves Orlando, I see it as just as big a risk to trade away the #32 pick to a contender as it is to draft a quality player under the age of 22 who has a great chance to be in the Cavs rotation right now.

Leuer and Parsons both have more NBA style games than NCAAB. I kind of liked Honeycutt before the draft. Apparently he cant get minutes for SAC though, hah.

Really no reason Thompson, Harangody, Eyenga should be on an NBA roster

In hindsight I would have really liked to maybe move that pick to OKC for Mullens.

But I, like others, wanted to take a chance on Jeremy Tyler or Josh Selby. Both who were top high school recruits. But I see why Grabt did what he did. Second rounders can help sweeten the pot of future trades.

Plus many were down on this draft class. Perhaps a Justin Harper type player would be a mid- second rounder in other draft classes.

At the time, I really wanted Justin Harper. Then we happened to draft Justin Harper and trade him immediately.
Yeah that one blew me ..U get a prospect like that and trade him..I thought I was looking at a Jim Paxson move..we took a guy who probably won't ever come overseas to play,we already have one in Europe so I thought Grant woulda selected someone who could come off the bench to add depth to the front line ..

idk if he'd still be available, but I'd absolutely love to have Buford.

The current Cavs regime just doesn't care about 2nd round picks. A few teams are like that in the NBA and ours seems to be one of them now.

So the team has limited quality young talent and they aren't interested in potentially adding onto that? No, 2nds don't usually end up materializing, but if Gilbert is being that anal wrt money then lol. The team has nothing to lose and not caring about 2nds is just dumb.

A team like LA or MIA not caring about 2nds is one thing - but they are picking 55+. It's a little different when you're in the early 2nd.

You'd think that 2 of their own picks & current players - Varejao (OK - we technically traded for him) and Gibson - would make the Cavs care the tiniest bit about 2nd round picks? Especially since we have 2nd rounders that will be in the top half (our own, the New Orleans pick, etc.).

If what Ben says is clear, then we're going to try to use those draft picks as trade bait to get better picks this year (1st rounders at that). Combine that with Andy, Jamison, Sessions, etc. and we'll be set to get another key guy in June of 2012 with the current pick we have.

The Cavs regime doesnt care for 2nd round picks so much, ...that they traded it for TWO 2nd round picks lol

I wanted them to take Jeremy Tyler with it, but at the same time he's the exact type of player who is always taken with those picks and who never works out.

I'm not going to be one to doubt their draft strategy at this point. Grant is off to a very good start.

How the hell does Milwaukee keep finding all these second round players? they've doing it for 2 decades in the second round.

Leur, Redd, Session, Mbah a Moute, Ilyasova, Bogans, Alston, Voshon Lenard, Eric Snow, Phills. They can't hit the ocean with there first round picks but whatever they'er doing in terms of evaluating the less high ranked players is working.

It's pretty amazing to see the consistency of some teams. The Spurs are another excellent example. They've had one pick higher than 25 (excluding the one they traded for in 2011, obv) in the past 11 drafts yet managed to snag Parker, Ginobili, Blair, Salmons, Splitter, Scola, Hill, etc etc. Gotta admit I am pretty jealous.
