My take on the trade is this

as much as we all valued Ramon's contributions when he was scoring and sharing the ball, his long term plans were not in Cleveland

Other GMs knew that, despite how much his agent spun how much he "liked" playing in Cleveland

we ran the real risk of losing him at the end of the year for nothing . . . . See Jamison

also this team is fairly devoid of NBA ready talent beyond its top 6-7 players

the way I see this trade it was a trade of unwanted assets , The Lakers (Luke walton and Jason Kapono) for Ours (Eyenga) to get the Lakers #1 pick

if you want to look at from a purely financial perspective we basically paid for the Lakers pick

the cost being the difference of Walton's salary next year($6,100,000) minus the cost of Eyenga's ($1,174,080)

in a word you could claim Gilbert already "bought" a pick in this years, the cost of a late 1st round pick . . . about 5 million

depending on what mock drafts you follow that Late first from the lakers could fetch us someone like
Draymon Green,
Tony Wroten,
Mason Plumlee
Fab Melo

remember Norris cole was a late first for Miami last year and he has worked out pretty well for everyone's least favorite team

while I agree that you can get really good players with late 1st rounders (and later), specially if you do your homework, Parker, Manu, etc. Can't agree that Norris has really worked out for Miami, he had a period of time when he got really hot but who the hell knows what he's doing now.

What was the "optimal" trade we should have made? Thanks to Dwight, no one was willing to do anything until the last few hours. There weren't 5 offers sitting on the table for Ramon. With a few hours to go, you take the best offer or risk getting nothing.

It's strange to me that you are upset about taking back Walton's contract. It's just Gilbert's money, why do you care? Last year you were calling Gilbert a snakeoil saleman and doubting that he would be willing to spend once Lebron was gone. Now he's proving you wrong, but you are still upset??? Taking Luke on doesn't hurt us, we will still have plenty of cap space. It's just more proof that Dan Gilbert will do whatever it takes to get Chris Grant the assets he needs to rebuild. Just like the Baron Davis trade. Luke will probably get flipped for another asset next year anyways.

So is it now a proven point that Gilbert is willing to spend? :chuckles:

Is that you Dan? Or Chris? Which one?

2. I will commend Sessions for improving since last season, but I do not ever think the guy will ever play TEAM winning basketball, particularly on a losing/rebuilding squad. Sessions has always been on shitty teams. Maybe that will change now and I hope that he benefits with his trip to LA. I look at Ramon and see someone who cares about his stats, not about how many wins he is adding to his team. Athletes will always say the right thing when the mic is in their face and tell fans what they want to hear.

I don't necessarily agree with that. I think last year Sessions really was all about getting his stats, but I believe Sessions actually did make a shift under coach Scott and changed into a different type of player. this season he has been all about passing the ball and setting up teammates. He often had more assists than Kyrie.

Norris Cole has been a good rotational bench player for them

also Marshon Brooks who has played pretty well for the Nets was picked at #25

Our pick with the Lakers is slotted at #26

Good argument :chuckles:

Argument? I have already stated my opinions, he stated his OPINION. No sense on stating the same thing over and over and over.

We do not agree. That is life.

And I don't even want to get in the Dan Gilbert is a God issue again---you guys can believe what you want, I will believe what I want. Simple, right?

Yeah I really like Brooks, that was a good pick, but I hate the Nets so much that I won't give them any credit and will just blame it on pure luck and coincidence.

THAT'S YOUR COMEBACK???? :chuckles: What a puss...

You have nothing else to say about the shit you spewed last year? All us "shills" were right, you were wrong. Gilbert spent a shitlaod of money in the BD trade. He spent more money on the Sessions trade to get more picks. He has proven he is willing to spend...be a man and admit it.

As most of you know I thought this was a bad deal at first because of the pick swap--I had it as an F---I changed my mind to a C when the pick swap was in our favor. Still not sure. Yes, I like having an extra pick. No, I did not like giving up Ramon, as I see him as someone who could have been a part of the core long term (now I am not in the front office, I do not know if he was opting out FOR SURE, I do not know what other teams were going to offer--I do not know if he could have been sold on playing 28 to 30 min per game as backup PG, sharing some minutes with Kyrie---I get all the issues we probably had--I get that we probably HAD to trade him.)

One thing to think about--go back draft Ramon came into the league--if there was a re-draft, he goes top 10 with almost no problem. So the net of our trade was a top 10 pick in quality player, a late first (Eyenga), took on $5 million to get a late first and optional pick swap. The Lakers are saving $10Million and got a starting PG--all for one late first round pick and swapping a few spots next year (after watching the game last night, I do not see them dropping much next year unless someone gets hurt and is out the year).

Now for a comparison trade, the Rockets gave up a crappy "big", took back Fisher, who they bought out for NOTHING and got the Mavs pick. THAT is an A deal for the Rockets. Why didn't we take Fisher?? Why didn't we offer to add any of our crappy bigs (Hollins? Erden? Jordan Hill sucks, so don't try to even tell me he was a diff maker here--Hollins could have been 6 fouls a game for them) plus maybe even add Parker (SF D, three pt shooter to play spot minutes?) and take Fisher back with Walton and get both picks??

Also for those of you who think Sessions sucks--go watch the Lakers play with him--and he is just getting used to his new team and offense....PLUS 40 in 99 minutes when he is on the floor so far. How long before potato head sees this and lets him play 35 minutes a night?? Per 36 numbers so far..17.3, 8.6, 4.7 shooting 56%,42.9% and 78.6%..PER of 23.7 with a USG rate of just 20. I know small sample size---but once he gets the offense down, I think his assist numbers might go even higher--his shooting probably won't stay that high, but I do see him around 45% from the floor and 35 to 38% or so from three.

Anyone else see that fast one he pulled there? Ramon Sessions is a top 10 quality pick, but the guy the Rockets traded, someone WHO WAS ACTUALLY DRAFTED IN THE TOP 10, is a "crappy" big. Oh, that was neat.

And please correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't you the guy complaining left and right last year when the Cavs didn't immediately try and make good on Gilbert's "promise" and go out and spend like mad men and try to win right away? Im curious because if the Cavs FO had followed your advice, there would almost certainly be no Kyrie Iriving in Cleveland right now.

Yeah I really like Brooks, that was a good pick, but I hate the Nets so much that I won't give them any credit and will just blame it on pure luck and coincidence.

well I don't like the Heat either but we can fill out our talentless bench potentially with a nice role player as I don't see Grant going the stash a Euro route emulating the spurs that Ferry did

the other thing worth point ing out is our bench consists of Three undrafted Dleague pickups in Harris, Samuals and Sloan

and to think they WEREN"T drafted and Harangoddy , Erden , Hollins and Eyenga were speaks volumes of how better I feel about Grant and our current FO now than Ferry and his talent evaluation

For what it is worth Hollinger seems to think we should have gotten 2 picks for the package we gave up.

Wrong thread but I am getting a man crush on the idea of getting Tony Wroten in the late first. He is a 6'6 athletic combo guard. He doesnt shoot well from deep, but does almost everything else well. His ability to drive, defend, rebound, finish at the rim, etc would work perfect next to Kyrie. If we land Beal/Lamb with our first pick, we would have our guard rotation of the future locked up. If we get someone like MKG or barnes, we still have a great wing combo from this draft.

Ok, back to talking about Sessions.
