Chris Grant the master mind he is.

@WindhorstESPN: Correction from earlier: In Lakers-Cavs trade, it is Cavs who have right to swap Heat pick they own with Lakers pick in 2013.

I whined about the earlier report.

I LOVE THIS.

I can root for the worst for two of my least favorite teams with only good consequences for the Cavs.

Thank you, Chris Grant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Windy just said the Cavs will have the right next year to swap the Lakers 2013 pick with Miami's 2013. Does that mean the Cavs got a 2012 AND 2013???

this was a key to the trade being good or not. We not only got a pick this year, we very likely improved our pick next year as well.

No protection on the swap? If the Lakers somehow bomb next year and end up in the lottery, could we yoink?

Lakers most definitely going to have a worse record then the Heat next year, so a stellar move.

that pick swap option could be golden, especially considering the age of kobe and bynums knees.

None of the specifics have been reported about the protection on the picks. The Heat pick is lottery-protected, so if the Heat all get injured, the Cavs wouldn't get the pick (and wouldn't be able to swap it). There were ESPN reports that the 2012 Lakers pick is lottery-protected. I can't imagine they wouldn't have lottery-protected the 2013 pick just in case, but no news on that yet.

Nice.
Based on the history of Chris Grant the pick swap does sound like something he would insist on.

So is the Laker's pick next year top 14 protected as well? Would be a horrible trade for the Lakers if it isn't.

Disagree. This trade was already an A. It just became in A+.

Bravo, Chris Grant, bravo.

That can't be right. Its against the rules.

Umm no, it's not against the rules. If we take the Laker's pick next year they get Miami's pick.

The best part is that all the insiders think it was a terrible trade. Imagine if Ramon opts out and goes else-where next year, also Gasol or Bynum going down/traded. An ESPN writer even mentioned that if things went under Kobe could be amnestied....

Hollinger failed in his trade analysis...

For starters. when was the last time a first round pick sold for $3m?

If this was the "market value", the Cavs would have been collecting dozens of them.

The Suns were dumping their picks left and right for a while to keep out of the luxury tax, but when they dealt the Rondo pick they got a future #1 in the deal.

So, it appears the Lakers didn't want to send us their trade exemption, but instead tossed us Kapono's expiring and to make up for us taking on additional salary they gave us the right to swap the Miami pick for theirs.

Not bad at all, and it keeps bumping our chances of getting something good out of that future pick if Miami or LA takes a dive.

Look people, aka Hollinger and Ford, yeah on paper the Lakers win the trade....but guess what...Sessions was almost 100% gone for nothing in the summer anyway. So they did the best they could, yeah having walton's contract is annoying, but whatever, its not really going to prohibit them from doing what they want in terms of trades and player moves, its not like they were going to make a huge FA splash, and they still have plenty of room next year = flexibility.
