The value of multiple first round picks is in the flexibilty to target and aquire a higher pick or sweeten a trade in a more precise way. The 22nd pick and some expiring contract to move up 6 spots and get somene you really need for example

The pick swap thing is interesting, but realistically it is probably just splitting hairs.

The Lakers have not picked below the mid 20's since the Gasol trade, and even next year they likely will be at worst a 2nd round or so team.
.
You're right, they'll probably be a 3-6 seed again next season.

However, they have an aging roster that lacks depth with no real way to improve. An early playoff exit this year and one or two really bad injuries next year could cause an implosion. There have already been coach/player issues less than one year into MB's regime. Put that along with a deep, deep Western conference with some up and coming young teams, and it's not out of the question for L.A. to miss the playoffs.

At worst, you move up $300,000 worth of spots. At best, you move past half the draft board. No risk, high potential reward.

Right. Marshon Brooks was taken 25th in a "weak" draft and I damn sure would love to have him on this team.

It might help a few spots, but it is not going to be a bonanza most likely.

They are "assets" but I think sometimes there is some major over valuing around here of there value. Picks in the mid 20's rarely turn into anything more than rotational type guys, and I have yet to see an NFL type trade where multiple scrub picks are packaged to move up to a pick that is actually worth a damn.

All they are is basically free lottery tickets at the end of the round where you hope you hit on a diamond, but realistically you don't get much out of those guys. Depth is wildly overrated, and my first priority is figuring out how we get another difference maker in here to help Kyrie, not accumulating mid 20's picks as if that is going to be the missing link.

Better than nothing, but doesn't really help address the bigger issues.

Dude, you NEVER know. Think about it this way - there are so many teams each year that are effected significantly by injuries/drama/etc and we just doubled our chances that we got that team's draft pick. It's like another lottery! This looks especially good in comparison to what was first being reported (hai Windy!).

I'm stoked. I'm stoked for this year. I'm stoked for the draft lottery. I'm stoked for the draft. And I'm stoked to root against the Lakers and Heat every game next year.

I'd give the trade a B+. Having to take back Walton lessens it just a little. Still like the trade and it accomplishes what the Cavs wanted to accomplish.

For some reason Hollinger has been in love with Sessions. That, along with seeming to not know about Sessions opt out, clouds his judgment on the trade.
Judging some of the commentary on this trade, you really see how so many national writers do not know about all the teams and players in the NBA.

The option to swap picks in 13' made this trade. Lakers at a ticking time bomb with Brown at HC, Kobe aging and Bynums knee.

This is classic tunnel vision at its best. I haven't read past your post yet, but I'm sure there is someone who will point out to you how illogical this is. Just do yourself a favor and peruse draft choices after pick 19 to see the value that can be had there. Good franchises with good scouting can turns pick like that into gold, as there is definitely value there. Not to mention, picks like this can be accumulated to move up. It's not always about finding gold and praying we're going to hit a homerun to find KI's running mate, but even then, that isn't some miraculous once in a lifetime event that you're trying to paint.

The only blemish is that we got the LAL's pick instead of DAL's. LAL made a smart moving getting Grant to take the lesser pick so they could flip the more valuable one on another asset. Houston lucked into being the beneficiary, receiving the better pick for a lesser player. Who knows though, maybe Dallas ends up passing them by the end of the year.

The trade is not a home run but accomplishes what we needed. I certainly can see how the national guys who think we are trying to win and the Lakers fans who have been trying to dump Walton and Fisher and acquire a real point guard for eons think they won the trade. From my standpoint this trade is quite leveraged for both this year and next year. In stock market terms there are like 2 collars on the trade. If the trade propels the Lakers to the championship well then Gilbert won-another year without a cHeat ring and if they tank we get a high pick. As far as next year if they do beat the cHeat and win the ring then the cHeat may blow it up and we would get a good pick but if the cheat win the title this year then when the Lakers blow it up then we will get a good pick. Besides other than the cHeat, the team that Gilbert wants to see lose the most is the Lakers and if they blow it up that it good in another way. Well played.

I think Dallas pick is top 20 protected think LA pick is better.

We get Luke and Kapono. We have our own first round pick this year, which can give us a very good player or maybe a star. We have also LA's first, at mid 20's. And next year we can swap LA's pick with Miami's. It's a B+ or maybe A- for me.

love it. miamis pick is going to be so high next year, and lakers have a real chance of being lower. we could end up with 2 early 20s picks. i guess we technically lost this deal, but its the right deal to make. sessions was leaving next year, and there is quite a bit of talent in the first round this year. sessions is overrated by the rest of the planet, but we all know he cant be the starting point guard on a championship team. i mean they need a distributing point guard who feeds their bigs and can hit open threes. sessions definitely does not fit that role.

The under-rated part of this trade is that we now have extra incentive to root against LA and Miami next year.

Grant just said in the presser that if the lakers fell to pieces this season (hypothetically), the pick would jump over to 2014 and be to 14 protected still. No mention if there is protection on the swapping of picks,
