OSU's Self-imposed Sanctions

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Some of you are conveniently forgetting something major. It's not just the fact Tressel didn't inform compliance of problems, but also the BIG fact Tressel lied to the NCAA TWO times about the issues. He lied. He lied. He lied. Why isn't this a part of your statements and posts? Lying to the NCAA is major stuff.

Oh and BTW: OSU is not helping itself at all. The NCAA is not some moronic and idiotic group of humans. Even if they have no proof of anyone else knowing, they certainly are not naive to believe the BS still coming from Ohio State who is putting the total blame on Jim Tressel.

This is going to be bad. Real damn bad.

They forced him out, of course they're going to make him the scapegoat now.

Cowards way out by OSU, I still believe they could/should have taken their lumps like men and stuck by Tressel...who certainly doesn't deserve what he got.

Not for the type of man he is.

Really Ohio State???? You really want us to believe that nobody else knew about the cars, tattoos, etc? No other coaches, administrators, school officials...none of them knew anything?
To be fair, as long as the NCAA cant prove no one else knew about the tatoos then it shouldnt count against OSU. The car issue might be another story. And for those that say OSU hasnt been hit with a lack of institutional control, well the investigation is not over yet by any stretch of the imagination. The fact that OSU is willing to vacate victories goes to show how much hot water they really are in and the are trying to take a preemptive strike against the NCAA to lower the blow.

Actually, the investigators left OSU weeks ago. So I'm fairly certain the investigation is over.

And them coming out with self-imposed punishment is standard protocol...Making that out to be more than it is, sensationalism at it's finest.

Hell, Nebraska just placed themselves on probation....Was that a sign they're about to get hammered to?

Speaking of reactionary pessimism....

I know they have to make the the scapegoat to save their own asses now, but calling him an embarrassment crosses the line to me, especially when there were others - most likely the AD included - who certainly knew of the violations that were occurring and said nothing as well.

I agree with everything you said except that;)

You were in denial that it would even get close to this bad.

It will get worse. I am thinking USC is an appropriate benchmark.

USC's AD stone-walled the NCAA every step of the way. While Tressel lied to the NCAA, the AD asked him to resign and the Athletic Department has assisted the NCAA's investigation every step of the way.

There's a huge difference between the way USC handled their situation and the way Ohio State has.

Also keep in mind, Petey left for the NFL before the sanctions....Ohio State essentially fired Tressel which is a huge punishment in itself....

While Ohio State decided to force Tressel out, Mike Garrett hired Lane Kiffin, a walking NCAA violation to spit in the face of the NCAA:
“As I read the decision by the NCAA, all I could get out of all of this was … I read between the lines and there was nothing but a lot of envy, and they wish they all were Trojans,” Garrett said to cheers Thursday night at the San Francisco Airport Marriott.

Garrett made the statement on a previously scheduled coaches' tour stop for football coach Lane Kiffin and men’s basketball coach Kevin O’Neill, whose programs faced sanctions. Football took the brunt of the hit in the report with a two-year bowl ban among other penalties due to improper benefits received by Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush. USC will appeal.

Declaring that “we can still split a national championship if we win all our games,” Kiffin also indicated he was heartened to learn 56 of his players appeared this morning for a voluntary 7 a.m. workout.

“Regardless of what happens in that appeal, we know this: SC is more powerful than anything else,” Kiffin said. “The university, the football program, the basketball program -- no matter what they try to do to us, it won’t matter.”

USC also had an assistant coach who knew of Bush's relationship with the agent paying hundreds of thousands of dollars. You also had the basketball team caught paying for OJ Mayo. And Matt Leinharts dad paying for housing for several football players. And Pete Carrol welcomed agents to USC practices which is frowned upon.

Tressel lied about players trading valuable awards for tattoos...and then was fired for it. But the fact that the players had to trade awards for tatoos vs. getting free hand-outs at least shows their wasn't a program out of control. A program out of control doesn't consist of star players having to trade Fiesta Bowl sportsmanship awards and Big 10 championship rings...they'd just get everything for free.

51 of 52 cars sold by the dealership were sold for a profit. The Ohio BMV has stated no illegal activities took place in regards to the car sales. The players got the same deals as anyone else. Unless you want to believe Pryor should have paid top dollar for a car with 86,000 miles on it....

The other issue here in my mind is UNC....they have tutors admitting to paying parking tickets and writing papers for players. And by all accounts Butch Davis is going to keep his job and they aren't getting the LOIC tag. What's worse..players trading awards for tattoos, or university employees paying parking tickets and writing papers for athletes?

And just for completeness sake, the 1 sold for a loss had been on the lot for 5 months and they were trying to get rid of it.

Can't imagine it gets much worse.

People expecting USC have seemingly been watching too much ESPN...

Maybe a bowl ban this year and a marginal number of scholly's.

Maybe not though...

I have no idea what OSU gets here, but let's be honest, you've been underselling from day one. Everytime it gets worse, you claim it won't get worse any more than that.

What do you mean every time it gets worse?? There have been no NCAA sanctions yet.

Its not illegal to sell a car for a loss or little profit. Its not illegal to loan a guy a car 3 times that never even bought a car from you. Its not illegal to give a guy a good deal on a car because he signed an autograph for you. The dealership isnt in trouble. They arent on scholaraship with a NCAA sanctioned school. Its the players and the school that violated NCAA policy, but yes I will concede no laws were broken.

How many overnight loaners has anyone here ever received when their car is not in the shop nor have you actually ever bought a car from the dealership? Or how many 3 week or even 3 day test drives have you been on?

As for the UNC thing, come on now. Just because Butch does something, doesnt make it right. If Butch jumped off a bridge would you jump too. (actually I would rejoice, but that is something else). My point, UNC is going to get severaly punished. If Butch isnt directly linked like Tressel was, then he will get to keep his job. But bringing up other schools bad acts to make OSU's not look as bad is childish. But yes UNC might be worse, and yes they will pay the price when its all said and done.

The entire dealings with the car don't even seem to be an issue anymore.

Pretty sure OSU feels confident in the fact they were cleared of that.
