2016-2017 Indians Off-Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Had an OPS over .900 against lefties as well

This is what it's all about. He's more than likely going to still be very good the next two years, and be worth every penny of the contract.

When me and D-Wreck see eye to eye then that means there is no argument this is whole truth! lol Encarncion is going to be solid for us for at least a couple season especially if a healthy Brantley and Lindor are in front/behind him in the lineup. No pitcher would want to face that!

Also on another side not, the rumor is McCutchen is now of the trading block table, which means no one put up the price the Pirates were looking for. I know in the rumors the Indians at least did make an offer for him, just not sure how much we were willing to put into the trade.

Encarnation's OPS dropped 43 points last year. Not insignificant.

Say that exact same drop happens this upcoming year, he's still at .843 OPS. Is that worth 20M a year? Probably not, but it would still be second best on the team and it would be an upgrade over what the Indians got out of the cleanup spot from Napoli in a year that they went to the World Series.

With the rest of the division either openly rebuilding or on the cusp of it, the likelihood of the Indians making the playoffs in 2017 and 2018 is pretty high barring injuries. With pretty much every key player signed through then, it seems like the Indians should be looking to maximize that window as much as possible, no?

The Rangers have denied this so many times that they're out of money....

Yup...and I don't believe it for one second that if his price range falls closer to what the Indians want, that they will still feel that way.

The biggest question at the end of the day are the Indians even willing to pay him enough to outbid texas once they decide to come back into the bidding war?

And I maintain all things equal- if he cares about winning, dollar for dollar, he'll be more likely to win a ring here.

Right now on paper the best three teams in the American league are Boston, Cleveland and Texas, it is likely Houston as the first wild card spot at the moment. So Texas in a way has as much to offer in that sense, but with the Indians there is a good chance with the guys that will be around him, he could get an MVP Award in the middle of the lineup we have if Brantley is healthy

I don't agree that Texas looks good on paper. Their pitching staff blows. Given their run differential from last year, combined with the guys they've lost, I don't think they are a playoff team. Maybe they'll get lucky again like last year, but I doubt it.

EDIT: looked at their current position players, and they really need to bank on Choo being healthy, Gallo making contact, Profar finally being good, Gomez not being terrible, Mazara being better, and Beltre continuing to defy after time. Seems like a long shot.

Projected lineup:

C: Lucroy
1B: Profar
2B: Odor
SS: Andrus
3B: Beltre
OF: Mazara
OF: Gomez
OF: Choo
DH: Gallo

I agree on the chances to win a ring being better here...just not sure how the dollar for dollar will work with us and Texas and the whole no income tax thing.

But it in the end, if his price drops, he'll go to the team willing to pay him. And I can see the Rangers willing to pay him when it does in fact drop, which by all accounts it is currently doing.

There's always the 2nd NL team that was (not specifically) mentioned.

Think the mystery 2nd NL team has been revealed:

Despite reportedly signing Dexter Fowler to a five-year deal worth at least $80 million, the St. Louis Cardinals aren't done spending this offseason and could become more aggressive than previously thought with All-Star sluggers Edwin Encarnacion and Mark Trumbo as possible free-agent targets.

I'm actually in opposition to signing Encarnacion. He'd look great in the lineup but the price-tag is too much IMO.

He was terrible against lefties last year, and his BA dipped a massive amount in general. Sure, the power numbers are nice, I guess I'm just not convinced we couldn't find a platoon situation that offers similar production, albeit in different ways, at a much cheaper price.

There are still some interesting names that could be great value on short deals....Lind, Alvarez, Ryan Howard (maybe due for bounce back even after hitting 25 HR's in limited at bats), Morneau, Butler, Carter, Gutierrez, Reynolds, etc....

I'd hate to invest long-term in a guy who is already showing serious regression and there are rumors of negative clubhouse impact.

Ultimately, I believe they end up re-signing Napoli. I think they meet in the middle.....Nap loved his time here and Tito likes him in lockerroom.

I'd prefer a platoon situation with guys in 1-2 year deals, that work interchangeably with Carlos at 1B.
What kind of mind control techniques have the Dolans performed on you?

It's about long term competiveness for me. I don't think Encarnacion does this club any long term favors. Might work out for a year but I even question that.

At this point, one should question why Edwin is still fishing for his contract. There has to be a lot of trepidation throughout MLB to see him still sitting on the open market....

Completely disagree.

His takes aren't nearly hot enough and he hasn't made enough personal attacks on posters for my liking in the Indians section

He'll never make it here with that can-do compromising attitude

Ahhh, shut the hell up...asshole...

This team is never going to win anything under the Dolanz. Be surprised if they win 40 games next year with this group of no names.

Bring in some big names! Guys like Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, and Jose Fernandez...and maybe fans will finally care and the team will go for it...cheap asses.

I mean, on a scale of 1 to necessary...
