Gamers boycotting the last night because of gamersgate

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I wish he would have expanded on his comments. Is he talking feminism wins like reverse handmaiden tales situation? That sounds really interesting. When you just say feminism won it sounds like he could be saying he doesn't want women to have equal pay, rape issues, reproductive rights ect. I could see where people could take issue. Really we need him to address what he means by feminism winning out.

Yep...

He doesn't agree with the definition of feminism that many modern feminists claim defines feminism.

Did he say how he chooses to define feminism? (or how the rest of us are supposed to know what he's talking about when he uses the term?)

And even if that's the case, his assertion about Gamergate is flatly wrong. Again, it had very little to do with journalistic integrity and a hell of a lot to do with sexism.

Did he say how he defines feminism?
No, but he said he supports egalitarianism and is a gamergater. They tend to believe certain things about feminism.

As I said before though, saying one supports egalitarianism doesn't mean one isn't a feminist. I'm an egalitarian and a feminist.

I don't think him choosing to redefine feminism really works for any argument, if that is indeed what he's doing.

Lastly, in my experience, folks who are "gamergaters" were not actually egalitarians.

My understanding is gamergaters don't like these pretend feminists that look for any reason to get outraged.

Neogaf is a place you will get banned for being critical of anti gamer gaters just because you took that stance. The sites owner has admitted to sexually assaulting women over seas. So the hypocrisy runs wild.

I would argue that's a pretext for other deep-seated issues.

I found that "gamergaters" were just as much a part of "outrage culture" as the people they were deriding -- worse even.

C'mon Ty... for real?

The sites owner has admitted to sexually assaulting women over seas. So the hypocrisy runs wild.

Ty, I will say this.. when you hold a grudge.. you fucking hold a grudge.. for reals...

I don't think it was okay, nor do I think anybody with any moral compass is okay with harassment of anybody. That doesn't mean you can't be critical of some aspects of a movement. Unfortunately when you are people demonize you because they believe all of said movement is all good and nothing bad.

Thus it's okay to pirate his software, harass, ect. My favorite comment was this guy saying he will wait for humble bundle and just turn the slider up to 100 % charity. The gaffers ate that shit up.

In a vacuum, from what I understand, what he did was not okay. I wasn't there, I dunno, I have no interest in defending the guy.

That doesn't mean you can't be critical of some aspects of a movement.

I have no idea how this guy grabbing some woman's ass at a party in a bar in Spain (assault or not) has anything to do with a movement?

Not sure what you mean?

Again, I don't think software piracy is unethical... and no one EVER said it was okay to harass one of the devs of Last Night.. You're injecting that into this conversation.

As far as I can tell it was the gamergaters that were all full of faux outrage. They were doxxing and harassing people like crazy. I have said before, I sometimes have mixed feelings about people losing their jobs over single incidents, but online harassment campaigns where hundreds of people are threatening your life are not cool. That is what Gamergate was.

Anyway, not a gamer. Waste of time if you aren't making bank on it. I don't have time for it anymore.

I think there was a lot of what you described but I don't think that fits everybody. I think some people like the lead dev of this game truly believes in equal rights for everybody and not just women and also integrity in gaming journalism.

There was an incident years ago when gamespot posted a bad review for a game the site was sponsored by and it ended up being taken down. That sparked a huge debate over whether reviews were bought and the integrity of gaming journalism was questioned.

Also, as far as games being a waste of time. Would you consider watching tv a waste of time?

Honestly, it largely describes the majority of people though; particularly guys who made their careers on Gamergate.

Ty, the bolded is absolutely ridiculous and does not describe feminism. That's why I said that these folks use the term "egalitarian" as an attack on feminism; that is, to suggest that feminism is about female superiority over men rather than female empowerment and equal rights as well as equal opportunity - which is a component of egalitarianism. (which is why I don't think these guys are actually egalitarians).

and also integrity in gaming journalism.

Which is a joke man; c'mon....

There was an incident years ago when gamespot posted a bad review for a game the site was sponsored by and it ended up being taken down. That sparked a huge debate over whether reviews were bought and the integrity of gaming journalism was questioned.

"Gaming journalism" is one step below sports journalism; in that, these are not the kinds of journalistic activity in which one might expect ethics to play a large factor. So if you tell me Gamespot bends to pressure from advertisers (like every news network on Earth), I would tell you "so fucking what? it's a tech/gaming site, that's what they're business model is."

Again, it's just an infantile position presented by the most outraged and "triggered" reactionaries in our society.

They use this argument as cover to attack people; particularly feminists. This has nothing to do with journalism, and everything to do with anti-feminist reactionary behavior.

Also, as far as games being a waste of time. Would you consider watching tv a waste of time?

Yes... and I'm a gamer. Games are definitely a waste of time.

Yes I would.

Yes I would.
I'm just not a fan when people bash videogames and say it's a waste of time and then will binge watch 10 episodes of some season in a sitting. My thing is not every second of what you do in a day needs to be occupied with something that is deemed productive. As long as you don't neglect things that need to get done then I see no harm in whatever activity you chose to do that helps you unwind.

There's no harm in it; but I think folks take this concept of being a "gamer" way too seriously... It's a tag that really describes a bunch of people who happen to share a hobby. That doesn't make us a cohesive social group.

The tag, a decade ago, had a much more positive air about it, IMHO.
