I keep seeing Trey Mancini's name being thrown around like he has a lot of value. To me, doesn't.
Hell, just last year, he was worth NEGATIVE WAR.
While he's not nearly as much of a swing and miss guy, he's much closer to Chris Carter than he is to JD Martinez.
I mean, he clearly figured something out in the 2nd half of the season. In this case it's not picking out a random blowup in September, it's the first start of the 2nd half.
I mean, Mancini was a shitty hitter last year too. It wasn’t just his fielding dragging him down.WAR is a good measure of overall player value, but his defensive shortcomings certainly bring that number down for him. His OPS+ is higher than Lindor's this season and would rank 2nd on the Indians. I agree he's not a centerpiece for Bauer, but he'd be a welcome addition to a lineup that could afford to stick him at DH.
I think he's consistently solid but not consistently elite. This year he was great in March/April, dreadful in May, and really good again in June. He's also much better in his 10 road starts than he has been in his 11 at home this season, mostly because he's been plagued by the long ball at Progressive Field:
Home: 2-5, 4.92 ERA, 37 ER, 14 HR allowed, 31 BB, 82 SO, 10 HBP
Away: 6-2, 2.43 ERA, 19 ER, 6 HR allowed, 23 BB, 78 SO, 4 HBP
I don't know the explanation to it. Maybe it's just sample size, or who he happened to face at home vs road, or maybe he tinkers too much. But until I see a repeat of 2018 - a strong season throughout - again, I'll think that season was the outlier. I hope to be proven wrong though.
Anthony Castrovince proposed this in a column today:
Milwaukee gets: RHP Trevor Bauer
Cleveland gets: OF Trey Mancini; RHP Dylan Bundy and RHP Mychal Givens
Baltimore gets: SS Brice Turang, OF Tristen Lutz, RHP Zack Brown, C Mario Feliciano, RHP Nick Sandlin and SS Marcos Gonzalez
I agree that Houston probably has Bauer at the top of their board this deadline. If I’m the Indians though, I’m not trading him to them unless either Tucker or Alvarez are the return. I highly doubt that Alvarez would be moved, so it’s pretty much Tucker or no Bauer as far as I’m concerned.
Even if Whitley’s medical look ok, isn’t it concerning that he currently looks like he’s forgotten how to pitch?I'd do a 1:1 trade with Houston for Bauer if it involves any of Kyle Tucker, Yordan Alvarez or Forrest Whitley (if the medicals are okay).
The Astros are OBSESSED with spin rates. Trevor Bauer would be like their wet dream. I also think that's why their pitchers are all getting hurt.
I'd love to get JB Bukauskas from them but he's not a headliner. I think he could be a truly elite multi-inning back end of the bullpen arm.

Like I said, his value is more in line with Chris Carter than an elite DH option.
Well, you responded to me saying negative war last year and mentioned it being dragged down by his defense. We're talking this year, no? I don't think anyone said he was elite, but he'd provide a significant upgrade.

Of course he’s very talented, but given his issues, I don’t believe his value is anywhere near high enough to snag Bauer straight upEhh, there's enough track record to know he's very talented. His mechanics are all out of whack though and I'm certain it's contributing to his health issues. I mean, there's some very real indicators in his delivery that his arm health is very much at risk. He needs a mechanical overhaul.
If the Indians think it's a fixable issue, then they should go for it. If not, then it's a definite no.

When he’s being thrown in as a centerpiece of a Bauer trade, he better be a top notch hitter if he’s going to basically be a DH level defender.
Then you’re quoting the wrong postsI don't want them to trade Bauer if he's the centerpiece. I'm just saying he'd help - he's a pretty good hitter.

My entire point regarding Mancini was related to his trade value following the post about the mock trade from Castrovince
