Your 2019 Cleveland Indians

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I’d much rather give Arroyo or Chang an opportunity to claim the 2B job next season (or at least until Jose goes there once Nolan Jones arrives) than hope Kipnis can be a league average player next season at $5 million.
Depends on what they're doing with that 5 million instead.

I could see Kipnis coming back on some kind of discount deal.

Hard to see his market being that robust at 33 years old.

I also don't think he minds being here at all. Doesn't seem like the type that would just chase money to play for a bad team.

I think there’s gonna be more of a market for Kipnis this offseason than people think.

I also think we’re more sensitive to Kipnis’ downslide because of his salary relative to the rest of the team.

FG has him at 3.3 wins over the past two seasons combined (1.2 this year). BR has him at 2.1 over that same span (.5 this year)

It helps him that it’s been a down year for 2B across the league. Kip ranks 16th in WAR via FG for 2B (min 300 PA’s). He’d be an upgrade for nearly half the league.

See the 2B UFA class this year? Woof. It’s basically Kip, Brian Dozier, Schoop, Gennett, Forsythe and Castro. The rest is junk.

Crazy as it sounds, but Kip and Dozier are performing the best of the 2B’s going to market.

I wouldn’t discount the idea of Kip taking a hometown discount but I think he has a better shot at getting paid than people think.

Are there any potential trade candidates for 2nd base?

Seems unlikely that they’d deal for one given that they just acquired Arroyo to likely compete with Chang among others for the spot.

Plus, neither Jones nor Tyler Freeman is that far off from the majors. Freeman is a likely 2B, and while Jones probably doesn’t stick at 3B, he’ll probably still get a shot there to start his career.

Corey Kluber Game Line:
3IP | 2H | 2ER | 2K | 1BB | 2HR

24/41 Ks = 58.5% | 6/12 1st Pitch Ks = 50%

Sinker: 34.1% | S&M = 0
Cutter: 31.7% | S&M = 3
Four-Seam: 19.5% | S&M = 1
Curveball: 7.3% | S&M = 1
Changeup: 7.3% | S&M = 0

Hard Contact: (1) Four-Seam, (1) Cutter, (1) Sinker

Granted, markets aren’t necessarily replicated YoY, but I’d have a tough time seeing Kipnis getting what Dozier or Schoop got in free agency.

Which, could make him a return candidate.

He’s a fan favorite, second on the team in jersey sales behind Lindor.

If he finishes the season strong a 1 year 1-2 M deal is possible. For me to say that is a minor miracle, as I’ve wanted him as far away from CLE as we could possibly send him.
But a one year deal for min money is fine with how he's played this year. If he wants to leave, bye.

Are you out of your f*cking mind????

He may have earned a one year 2M deal if he keeps it up. It’s better than the minor league deal he was looking at, if that.

Some team is definitely going to give Kipnis a major league contract next season worth more than $2 million bucks.

The second base crop in the majors right now is pretty lousy, and Kipnis is having a halfway decent year at the plate and has been very good in the field this year. On pace to finish with his highest fielding percentage at 2B (.994) of his career.

He's currently got a higher WAR than the following starting 2B:
  • Yolmer Sanchez
  • Nicky Lopez
  • Harold Castro / whoever Detroit is throwing out there
  • Jurickson Profar
  • Rougned Odor
  • Dee Gordon
  • Robinson Cano
  • Starlin Castro
  • Jose Peraza
  • Joe Panik (recently waived)
  • Ian Kinsler
Tied with: Brian Dozier

Kipnis isn't an all-star anymore, but we could be far worse off at second base than we currently are, and one of these teams will gladly take him on for the right price if we let him go, guaranteed.

We’re all familiar with irrational dislike of players on this team.

But he’s definitely getting more than that.

So His WAR is in the bottom half of baseball for his position and someone is going to pay him more?
Maybe so. 1 year 3-4M? I’m curious as to what you guys think he’s worth.

Schoop had a 2018 that wasn't much better than what Kipnis is doing this year, and he got $7.5 million.

Dozier had a 0.0 WAR in 2018, and got $9 million.

If Kip finishes the year well, and finishes with a WAR in the 0.8-1 range, I bet some team gives him a 1-yr, $7.5-$8 million "prove it" deal.
