Koby Altman

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I’m not a fan. I haven’t seen anything that warranted an extension.

Well, consider that Dan is not really in a position to conduct a full-out search for a new GM, and likely won't be for awhile. And how willing would other GM candidates be to come to a franchise with an uncertain ownership situation?

If you think Koby is clearly a below average GM, then maybe you role the dice that our somewhat-disabled owner would have been able to do better. But otherwise, this is just the safest possible move. Just because Dan extended Koby doesn't mean he has to keep Koby if things go south down the road. But it does mean that during a time when his physical condition greatly limits his involvement, locking down a GM with whom he is comfortable gives the franchise stability, and eliminates the chance that Koby may decide to look elsewhere.

It was a smart, safe move by Dan with no real downside of significance.

Same here. He put all the wrong type of players around LeBron. He turned some expirings into late picks, ok nice but that’s kind of expected. Too wary to make a acall on the draft selections under him. Just haven’t seen anything to warrant a ‘long term’ extension.

You could even argue he did it twice in like 6 months

I think the perception and opinion of Koby is acceptable for both sides. But under the new circumstances the decision to extend him makes sense.

Not just the new circumstances. LeBron is gone for ever this time. Altman was the GM in 2017-2018 but still had to worry about threading the needle of rebuilding with trying to put pieces around LBJ. No move he makes at the 2018 Deadline brings us a different outcome.

By keeping him at least a little longer allows him to try and lay a foundation from top to bottom. Bring in consistency the organization hasn't had at the top since Dan bought the team. I'm not saying he's done great. I'm not going to say he's been horrible. But gotta wait longer then 2 years to judge a massive rebuild.

I don’t get it. Why extend him? He’s an amateur. He’s shit himself on basically every trade. And it’s hard to know what to think of his draft picks.

I’m not impressed.

He still put all the wrong players around him...
Who was he going to get? Outside of keeping Kyrie - something I argued for at the time - Koby did about as good of a job as possible at building a team that could get to the Finals while maintaining future flexibility. The team made the Finals and kept three out of four games incredibly close, hell, we even led for substantial periods in most of them.

Koby has done a great job in maximizing player value during trades, has picked up four young pieces that have shown major potential value, and has hired what looks to be a good coaching staff.

I'm a fan. Beyond the stability argument, which - as @The Human Q-Tip points out - is very important, Koby has done a really solid job the past few years.

I think it's hard to judge Koby for the year he was trying build around LeBron. He was trying to make sure they had something to rebuild with while trying to build a team around LeBron who didn't show any signs of commiting to the team beyond that year. Also while going against probably the most talented super team of all times.

I don't think we even know how long the extension is for or how it's structured. I think Gilbert has to at least let Koby try to build his vision. We are in year 2 of the rebuild, I can't see Gilbert pulling the plug until the some time in year 4 at the earliest.

Guys that could shoot for one, Griffin did it... Altman couldn’t. Put shooters around LeBron, it worked for so long no need to change it and put players like Clarkson, Nance and Hood!
We have no idea how we have drafted under Koby so far, there is nothing Sexton or Garland are showing that should make us rush an extension for him. Just a bad decision.
Stability is great, but only if you have something worth investing in which we have no idea we do and evidence thus far suggests probably not.

On paper Hood was a shooter. George Hill was a shooter. Clarkson was acquired to be a bench scorer on what had been a lethargic bench. Nance was brought in to be a energy big. Hill and Nance were fine during the playoff run that year. Clarkson sucked and Hood forgot how to shoot. I fail to see how any of those were bad "fits". Not everyone needs to shoot next to Bron. Lakers play Javale and Dwight. No one available at the deadline that year gets us over GS. Guess what we still made the finals that year.
