Cleveland Browns 2020 Regular Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'd probably give the nod to an "older" guy to fill out the top 5 all-time, but I have no probl

Don Hutson of Green Bay gets my "Old Guy" vote. He was head and shoulders above every other receiver in the 40s into the 50s. Ray Berry and Paul Warfield then took the baton into the 70s. Don't sleep on Lance Alworth of San Diego either.

With the caveat that everything I'm about to suggest is in theory and not yet proven, the Browns have literally done everything humanly possible to eliminate everything that went wrong last year that was out of Baker Mayfield's control.

Offensive coordinator had such a dysfunctional relationship with the head coach that it caused play calls to get in so slowly that audibles and presnap reads really couldn't be made? He's fired.

Quarterback coach had no experience in the role and couldn't provide in any actual coaching when things got tough? He's fired.

Head coach was insecure and incompetent? Both with his game management and his playcalling? He's fired.

General manager was forcing head coach to play certain players over others even if they weren't as good? He's fired.

Both starting tackles are terrible? They're both replaced by a top 10 draft pick and a free agent making 30M GTD.

Tight end room isn't that strong? Added the highest paid TE in the NFL and a draft pick who some people thought was TE1.

On paper there's no excuses for Mayfield. The Browns addressed every single issue offensively that was out of Baker's control. Simply put, it's up to Mayfield to play better.

Alworth might have been called "Bambi" but it's not for the reason you are thinking. BTW: My top 5:

1. Rice

2. Larry Fitzgerald (Look at all the bums who played for the Cards offense)

3. Don Hutson (Dominant numbers for his era)

4. Randy Moss (Front runner, but dominant)

5. Lance Alworth (Similar per game averages to Rice in the AFL)

Only problem is that they already poured a ton of $$ into the WRs this past year, and it didn't help Baker that much, even if the other above factors help.

That said, I have always been an OBJ skeptic, and an elite-WR-skeptic in general...

Missing Kareem Hunt for 8 games. I think having him from day one is a big addition.

You could have some of these top WRs of all time being debated in here on the team and it wouldn’t matter if the coaching and offensive line play is incompetent.

Baker deserves a share of the blame last year, but bad coaching and offensive line play is a death sentence.

Just a comment on Fitz- his prime years were absolutely neutered by having what basically amounted to having a back up qb. Undoubtedly, had a proper QB been in place, he’d be chasing 20k a little harder in the next season/two.

I firmly believe, given his now likely reduced role, he’ll play an extra season or two past this one, and it won’t even matter for 20k.

More positional analysis:

I don't know if this will bear good fruit in the short or long term, but it's nice to see this team isn't dramatically overspending in any particular way. Fiscal responsibility is good.

No GLC????
