The 2020 Cleveland Indians

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Feller is in the HOF, and in his day was considered one of the all time greats. He obviously had a career much better than Kluber. But he never put together a string of five/six years that Kluber did here. Of course, his war time years probably would have been his peak years.

Its too difficult to compare pitchers of different eras, but you can compare how each stacked up with others of the same era...thru stats like WAR, ERA+, and FIP.

As for my preference for the first round opponent, I don't really care. I don't want to play the Rays, but thats not a consideration. I'd love to play Toronto, but that's not gonna happen. One stat to consider...Chicago has a losing record vs RH starters.
It was interesting what the STO guys were saying about Feller and how in those days pitchers were expected to go nine innings every start. In fact, Feller had one season where he had 36 complete games in 42 starts. According to Rick and Matt, Feller said he would try to get the bottom of the order out on one or two pitches because strikeouts took too many pitches. Imagine how many K's Feller would have had if he tried to strikeout the opponent's worst hitters and their pitcher. Of course he wouldn't have pitched as many innings because he'd have used more pitches getting those K's.

Great point about the White Sox having a losing record against RHP's. Last night they sent eight right-handed hitters to the plate against Bieber and some of those guys, like Robert, Moncada, and McCann, are slumping. I think the best case scenario is if the Sox can win the division and end up with a better record than Oakland, giving them the second seed while the Indians get seventh so our first round opponent is the Sox. We'll end up the regular season either 7-3 or 8-2 against them. Winning this series against the Sox may come back to bite us if it means we end up playing the Twins or Yankees in the first round.

I wouldn't mind playing the Yankees, esp in the Prog.

They have given up nearly as many runs as the Orioles, and they have been lousy on the road.

Outside of Cole, their rotation is meh. They give up a ton of home runs, and they don't rack up a lot of Ks.Check out their FIPs, and tell which game they would have the pitching advantage.

More than that, their starters don't eat innings. Tanaka and Montgomery don't AVERAGE 5 IP a game. Only Cole averages at least six.

Our pen is better, too.

They have an awesome offense...at home. Outside of the Bronx they are average. I'm not kidding. Check out their individual home,/away splits. 200, 400, 500 point differences in OPS.

In fact, the more I look, the more I want to play them. Outside of Yankee Stadium, we are the superior team....and it may not be close.

Tribe is up the creek without the proverbial paddle when it comes to their center fielders going into
the postseason.

Deshields is a horrid defender with a very weak throwing arm who has great potential to make a
crucial defensive gaff in the playoffs. His hitting is below average and offers faint hope to compensate
for the looming defensive miscue(s).

Mercado might end up hitting below .100 if he played the rest of the games. But he is a decent defensive
player.

No other realistic hope visible than these two.

Push to shove, I go with Mercado for the glove and have pinch hitters on standby.

With his inept flailing at those off speed pitches in the dirt of the opposite batters' box,
Reyes is swatting the air like Cory Snyder.

I hope the Franimal will heed the words of his Fox promo and actually waits for a good
pitch and hurts it.

DeShields hasn't been great but I don't think he's horrid by any means. Mercado's offensive numbers this season are certainly horrid

Cory always looked like he was playing golf rather than baseball.

What happened to Mercado this past off-season? He certainly has been awful in 2020.

Pretty much all the saber sites pegged him for regression, but still... He has been bad. Luckily for him, we don't have an internal option chomping at the bit to displace him. I think you can expect a Lindor trade to target a CF/OFer and C but what do I know..

Some speculation that Johnson may get a shot at CF. Personally I don't see it, but maybe that is the plan. His use in the minors certainly don't demonstrate a commitment to working him out in CF.

I'll probably get scorched for this but what about giving Zimmer another shot? He can't be worse at the plate than Mercado and is at least as good of an outfielder . . .

I think Zimmer, Mercado etc, will all get another shot next season, but this season is a lost one for both guys.
