I was assuming either Garland or Sexton start at PG and KPJ starts at SG.

I also wonder whether Nance starts at SF just to allow for Nance, Love, and Drummond to all start.

Sexton - Porter - Nance - Love - Drummond

With Garland and Okoro 1st off the bench. Nance would ideally spend plenty of minutes at PF with Okoro, Windler, Osman, and even Porter at SF.
I don't remember..did that lineup ever play any minutes at all before the season blew up?

Having a hard time getting excited for a defender. Could be a little more thrilled if he didn’t shoot 67% from FT line. Doesn’t give me much hope he will develop a shot.

Did you want Deni? He shot worse from the line. You can work on free throws. Having some good guys on the team who shoot at a high level won't hurt. KPJ was a trash foul shooter in college but was respectable his first season.

I like the pick a bunch. Okoro does many things VERY well that our team does not. He's also a grinder and will work his rear end off. Nice pick by the Cavaliers.

A few weeks ago, after I got over the frustration of missing out on a top 3 pick and knowing we wouldn't be able to grab Wiseman, I thought about all of the possible prospects and Okoro just kept making the most sense.

It may not be exciting to folks because his jumper needs a ton of work. But his feel for the game is elite and he will add some things to the mix that we just don't have with our young talent today.

I love this kid. After Wiseman and Williams, he was next for me.

I can eventually see Garland, KPJ, Okoro as 1-3 with Sexton being the top scoring reserve in the league as 6th man.

In this draft, I'll take a guy at #5 with specific qualities we can count on - defense, versatility, sexy thighs - over a bunch of lottery tickets. Development of a passable jump shot is much more likely than a growth spurt and the sudden development of a defensive skillset.

I have to admit I had my doubts about this guy when looking at draft prospects. But I'm warming to it. Who really knows what he will develop into. He's 19 years old. He's a gym rat, and I'm sure he will develop a reliable shot. But right now he's a role player. On the Cavs, he's a complimentary role player.
Until Love is gone, he will provide the offense on the front line.

But I think the people who think IO will start immediately are wrong. He's just a kid and watching rookies start in the NBA is painful.

There was no chance Okoro would be available at #8. Surprisingly, Koby Did the right thing and took his guy. If the Cavs trade down, somebody would’ve traded up to take him if the teams ahead of us wouldn’t have taken him anyway

On 3P shooting, Okoro did demonstrate some improvement over the season in that area albeit on a small sample size.

Over the first 2/3 of the season (18 games), Okoro hit 24% (9-37)

Over the last 1/3 of the season (10 games), Okoro hit 33% (11-33)

He finished strong, and was taking and making more 3P shots. Again small sample size, but the fact that he showed growth in these two areas is encouraging for the future.

The fact that he can't shoot makes him the perfect tank pick. He will eventually help guard the best player when games start to matter again.

In general, I believe we as fans got a little too compartmentalized in the discussion of potential draft picks. Usually, this conversation only lasts two months or so, not nine plus months.

Some scout and draft site services preferred Deni, some preferred Okoro. They aren't that far apart as prospects. Their draft slots and the conversations our front office held also reveal that small gap.

A few posters were looking for reasons to tear Avdija down to build Okoro up, as well as vise versa. I don't think that is a take that ages well.

Avdija has some clear advantages - off ball offense and defense, height advantage, catch and shoot, playmaking. Okoro has some advantages - on ball defense, general better left hand, playmaking out of the P&R, shot off the bounce. It was a great situation that two small forwards were around the #5 area of the draft for the Cavs. They picked someone who clearly wants to be in Cleveland, can't be upset at that.

Let's see how it plays out, but I'd be careful about letting excitement over one prospect lead to bias against another.

For me personally, I saw Avdija as having the higher ceiling, especially because of his size - although he doesn't really have a great wingspan. As sort of a Cedi on steroids, that's a really valuable player in the NBA. I just saw a few more "if's" with him than I did with Okoro. But I can certainly understand why others may have preferred a higher upside and a bit more risk.

I do not think they start the super big lineup. It was very effective when the other team trotted out slower lineups. It does not have enough mobility to guard a traditional or small-ball lineup for long periods.

My guess is that the Cavs have a few different lineups beyond the starting group. If they want to go more pick-and-roll heavy, then I think you play Garland, KPJ, and Sexton at one time with two of Nance/Love/Drummond.

There is also a more defense-heavy lineup that has KPJ-Okoro-Exum-Nance with the fifth guy determined by the lineup they are facing.

The team is versatile enough to win ~30 games while avoiding a significant number of blowouts. The trick that JB needs to figure out is how to balance the goal of using winning lineups while also primarily attempting to develop talent.
